Gamora Zen Whoberi Ben Titan, better known as Gamora, is a major character in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame and one of the main characters of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
She is a variant of the original Gamora from an alternate 2014 who never participated in the hunt for the Power Stone, as the Avengers' time heist undid Thanos' Snap. After learning of how she became close to Nebula in the future, Gamora turned against Thanos to stop him. After Tony Stark sacrificed himself to stop Thanos and his army, Gamora left Earth, leaving the Guardians of the Galaxy, her future self's old team, to search for her while she joined the United Ravagers. Three years later, they recruited her to help stop the High Evolutionary, where she made peace with her deceased future self's team before returning to the United Ravagers.
She is portrayed by Zoe Saldaña, who played the original Gamora, and also portrays Neytiri in the Avatar films, Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Nyota Uhura in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek films, Joe McNamara in Special Ops: Lioness, and voiced María Posada in The Book of Life, Captain Celaeno in My Little Pony: The Movie, Adelina Fortnight in Missing Link, Maya in Maya and the Three, and Olga Solis in Elio.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Gamora was born as a member of the Zehoberei species on the planet Zen-Whoberi to an unnamed mother and father. Despite being happy on her home planet, the Zehoberei were also dying due to a lack of resources for everyone.
When Gamora was only a child, the genocidal space tyrant, Thanos, invaded Zen-Whoberi with his forces to halve the population as a solution to their lack of resources. Gamora and her mother tried to hide together, but were discovered by a member of Thanos' army. She attracted the attention of Thanos himself, who took a liking to her, showed her his switchblade, and spared her from the halving in which both her parents were killed. He then forcibly adopted her and raised her to be an assassin on his ship alongside her other adopted siblings.
She grew close with Nebula, her adopted Luphomoid sister, but their relationship was strained as Thanos forced the two girls to fight each other every day. Gamora always won, resulting in Nebula getting nearly every part of her body replied with cybernetic upgrades as punishment. Gamora was also cybernetically and bionically upgraded, but less to than Nebula. Eventually, Gamora built up a reputation as the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy, massacring thousands for Thanos, who came to genuinely love her as his favourite daughter, and believed she would be the heir to his throne.
At some point, Gamora found a map to the Soul Stone under Thanos' orders, but destroyed the map so he would never find it, due to him wanting all the Infinity Stones to halve the universe. She informed Nebula of this, and the sisters lied to Thanos that she had been unable to find it.
As adults, Gamora and Nebula began a hunt for a powerful item simply known as the Orb. Thanos wanted the Orb and sent his daughters with Korath the Pursuer to collect it. During a false lead for the Orb, Nebula became ensnared by an impenetrable Laser-Thorn-Energy-Net. Thanos' ordered Gamora to leave Nebula behind; Gamora complied with her father's wishes but left a large knife for Nebula with which to cut herself out of the netting. This made Gamora and Nebula both realise that their 'father' didn't truly care for them and would abandon either of them at a moment's notice, starting a deep resentment towards him for all he had done.
Thanos hired a Kree warlord called Ronan the Accuser to find the Orb in exchange for the complete annihilation of the planet Xandar and sent Gamora and Nebula as his enforcers. For Gamora, assisting Ronan was the last line she could not cross, she would not help the insane Accuser destroy millions of innocents as Thanos had done to her home planet.
Avengers: Endgame[]
In 2014, under Thanos' orders, Gamora and Nebula helped slaughter half of the Korbinites' population, like what had been done to the Zehoberei years ago. Gamora saved Nebula during the fight but was rebuffed, and the sisters returned to their Q-Ship, where Nebula informed Gamora that Thanos had found an Infinity Stone. Thanos himself than appeared and told them he was dispatching them both to Ronan the Accuser's ship, the Dark Aster, to help Ronan look for the Stone, but his plans were halted when Nebula's synaptic drive showed a hologram of another version of her in their universe. Going through the recordings, they discovered that Thanos succeeded with his plans in the future, but a group of heroes known as the Avengers were intending to undo the Snap. After seeing his future self be killed for destroying the Infinity Stones, Thanos turned his attention to prevent the Avengers from undoing his work, and decided to instead destroy the entire universe and rebuild it in his vision.
Thanos managed to kidnap the future Nebula, who cryptically told Gamora that her future Variant was murdered by Thanos for the Soul Stone, and sent 2014 Nebula in her place, infiltrating the present and using the Pym particles to teleport Thanos' entire army, Gamora included, to the present year of 2023, where they blew up the Avengers Compound right after the Avengers undid the Snap using their own Nano Gauntlet. While 2014 Nebula went to retrieve the Gauntlet to give to Thanos, Gamora started feeling doubtful over their father's plan and she returned to future Nebula, asking what became of their relationship in the future. Learning that the two became sisters in the end, Gamora freed the alternate Nebula, deciding to defect from Thanos to stop him.
After rescuing Clint Barton, Gamora urged 2014 Nebula to join her and present Nebula, but 2014 Nebula instead tried to shoot her, forcing present Nebula to kill her past self reluctantly. Gamora then participated in the Battle of Earth, fighting against Thanos and his army alongside the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and many other heroes. During the battle, Gamora encountered a human named Peter Quill, whom Nebula explained her future self had formed a romantic relationship with before Thanos kidnapped and sacrificed her for the Soul Stone. When she saved him from some Outriders, Peter mistook her for 'his' Gamora and tried to caress her face lovingly, but she knocked him to the ground and told him not to touch her, and expressed disbelief that her future self ever had a relationship with him, showing disgust and irritation toward him.
Upon Thanos and his army's death by Tony Stark, whom sacrificed himself by using the Infinity Stones, Gamora watched as the others mourned him before leaving due to not knowing any of them except future Nebula, and being permanently stuck in this timeline. After her disappearance, the Guardians of the Galaxy decided to search for her, but continued to protect the galaxy alongside their newest members - Thor Odinson and Kraglin Obfonteri.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3[]
Three years later, in 2026, still stranded in a future timeline, Gamora joined the United Ravagers under Stakar Ogord due to never meeting Peter or helping form the Guardians. She and the Ravagers formed a family-like bond, not unlike what her future self had with the Guardians. She also kept contact with the future version of Nebula as the two still considered themselves sisters.
Eventually, Nebula contacted her for help, as a member of the Guardians, Rocket, was critically injured by Adam Warlock, a Sovereign weapon. They discovered that Rocket had an implanted kill switch that would kill him should the Guardians use any life-saving medical equipment, so they paid Gamora to help them break into the headquarters of Orgocorp to steal the file of “Subject 89P13”, the label of Rocket, and Gamora took a Krylorian receptionist named Ura hostage, growing increasingly angered with Peter's consistent attempts to flirt with her as a replacement for her dead future version. Back on the Guardians' ship, they discovered that Theel deleted the pass key they need to disable the kill switch and stored it in an implant on his head a short time before they stole the file.
The Guardians decided to fly to the planet Counter-Earth to go after Theel. However, Gamora demanded to be brought back to the Ravagers, because going to Counter-Earth was not apart of the deal. She was also angered at Peter repeatedly trying to restart a romantic relationship with her, as she didn't know who he was, and he kept comparing her to 'old her', who Gamora didn't care about. However, the Guardians refused to risk Rocket's life just to drop her back with the Ravagers.
Frustrated, Gamora contacted Fitz-Gibbonok and sent him her coordinates, but he was captured by Orgocorp and killed by Adam Warlock, and Ayesha pretended to be a Ravager to get her coordinates to send Adam Warlock after her and Rocket so that the High Evolutionary would not destroy their kind.
The Guardians then arrived at Counter-Earth and Peter, Nebula and Groot went to meet with the High Evolutionary while Gamora, Mantis, and Drax stayed at the ship to watch over Rocket. Mantis and Drax decided to follow the other Guardians to the Arête, the ship of the High Evolutionary, and Gamora remained alone with Rocket. There, she listened to I'm Always Chasing Rainbows, looked through Peter's things, and vehemently stewed in her own anger.
However, the High Evolutionary sent War Pig to capture Rocket at the same time Adam Warlock arrived at Counter-Earth to capture Rocket too. Adam had to save his kind by bringing Rocket to the High Evolutionary, so he wanted to take Rocket from War Pig, killing her in the process, while Gamora escaped with Rocket on the Bowie, which she initially struggled with piloting.
At the same time, the High Evolutionary decided to destroy Counter-Earth and kill the civilization on it. Gamora found Peter and Groot, who took the implant from Theel. They escape from Counter-Earth and finally disabled the kill switch to save Rocket, while Nebula, Drax, and Mantis were left behind at the Arête. The High Evolutionary demanded the Guardians give Rocket to him or he would kill the three, which threatened Gamora, as she did not want her sister dead. Peter called Kraglin for help with Knowhere, and he shot a hole in the Arête so that the Guardians could infiltrate it.
They reunited with Nebula, Drax, and Mantis who told them about the Star Children who were going to die if they didn't save them. The Guardians defeated the High Evolutionary’s henchmen and connected his ship to Knowhere to bring all children on board. Rocket stayed behind to save the captured animals too, but was attacked by the High Evolutionary. Gamora managed to subdue him with her sword and remove his skin mask, showing the damage Rocket had done to him as a child, and she assisted the captured animals in escaping before the ship blew up, watching as the Guardians embraced after a reformed Adam saved Peter from near death due to the space exposure.
In the aftermath, Gamora finally learnt to be less cutthroat and angry, and was finally able to understand Groot, admitting it was good to work with him while she waited for the Ravagers to arrive and pick her up; she had enjoyed working with the Guardians, but still wanted to go back to those she viewed as family.
Peter finally accepted that this Gamora was different to the future Gamora that he had loved, and that she couldn't replace her, calling her 'not so bad'. As they said their goodbyes, Gamora sadly said she bet they were fun together, now understanding how important her future self was to Peter and seemingly regretful that she couldn't remember what they'd been like. The two parted ways as friends, with Gamora also saying goodbye to Nebula, before leaving and happily reuniting with the Ravagers, who she viewed as her family.
Personality[]
Gamora is similar to her Sacred Timeline counterpart, however, lacking the experiences with the Guardians of the Galaxy, she never developed the softer attitude the deceased one had due to adventures with the team, and joining the Ravagers had exaggerated her underlying roughness; the rowdy nature of the Ravagers also made Gamora faster to resort to violence and even more impatient than before.
Like how original Gamora considered Peter Quill to be a buffoon, the timeline migrant Gamora feels this more strongly, and finds his lingering romantic interest for a different version of herself as a nuisance. However, after the battle against the High Evolutionary, Peter finally accepted his Gamora was gone, now merely wanting a friendship with variant Gamora, who accepts - and upon sharing a journey with him, she understands what her other self saw in him, though doesn't feel the same romantic love.
A detail she has identical to the old Gamora was her relationship with her sister, Nebula; which was complicated, but held real sisterly affection. Sadly, the variant Nebula she knew was killed by the main timeline Nebula, as the former couldn't escape the control of Thanos like her killer had managed. Despite Nebula killing Gamora's version, she never held a grudge, understanding it was an unfortunate necessity; Gamora actually considered the surviving Nebula as another sister, being the first person she felt attachment to in the timeline into which she had traveled.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Cybernetic Enhancements: Like her future self, Gamora has been augmented with advanced cybernetic implants including cybernetic appendages granting her enhanced strength and reflexes, ocular and respiratory implants, and enhanced neurobiological system providing her with enhanced durability and rapid healing.
- Superhuman Strength: Being a Zehoberei, Gamora is naturally stronger than most humans. She was upgraded with a cybernetic skeleton by Thanos growing up, giving her even more strength, and she was shown to be able to overpower the High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock, two god-like beings.
- Superhuman Durability: Due to a mix of natural Zehoberei physiology and upgrades, Gamora is able to survive multiple injuries such as blunt-force trauma, electrocution, and falling from high distances.
- Superhuman Agility: Gamora shows great agility by leaping huge distances quite a few times, landing perfectly in battle positions
- Superhuman Stamina: Gamora has two livers, allowing her to metabolize and filter toxins quicker than humans can, being able to rather easily run back to the Bowie while holding the dying Rocket.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Having had her bloodstream upgraded, Gamora has an increased reaction times in dangerous situations.
- Accelerated Healing Factor: Bio-augmentations in her bloodstream allow Gamora to heal faster than she would without them, and she can easily get back into shape after a life-threatening situation.
Abilities[]
- Master Combatant: Like her future self, Gamora is highly trained in many forms of combat.
- Swordsmanship: Gamora is incredibly skilled at using her sword, Godslayer, and other blades, using them while massacring the Korbinites on Thanos' orders.
- Master Pilot: Gamora is shown to be capable pilot, although she struggled with the Bowie due to it being new to her, and she eventually managed to get the hang of it.
- Marksmanship: Despite preferring melee combat, particularly her retractable sword, Godslayer, Gamora is also skilled in firearms, using a gun to take down a soldier attacking Peter and pulling a gun on 2014 Nebula.
- Master Assassin: Considered 'The Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy', Gamora is regarded as Thanos' greatest assassin and a living weapon, having never failed him before on a task. This seemed to continue after his death, with her joining the United Ravagers and becoming even more cutthroat than before.
Equipment[]
- Godslayer: Like her future self, Gamora's primary weapon is a retractable sword known as Godslayer which she can use in combat. A past version of it was brought into the future during the Time Heist, and she later used it to defeat the High Evolutionary.
- Switchblade: It can be assumed, having the same life as her future self up until 2014, that Gamora had the same switchblade as her from when she was a child. Whether this Gamora still owns it is a mystery.
