Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."

“ | To say it frankly, when I got chased by you I got all worked up... You were the only one to find a faceless me... I was so happy... Those are my true feelings. | „ |

“ | In 10 years of being a spy... you're the first to catch me. | „ |
~ A4 after being saved by Mamiru Kai. |
A4 also known as The Phantom is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Mamiru Kai) of the I SPY manga one-shot by Tatsuya Endo. He's a spy from the Japanese Ministry of Defense who's undercover disguised as a businessman under the alias of Suzuki. He's given the task of capturing the traitorous minister, Ritsuko Uragi, but his plans end up being accidentally thwarted by his secret admirer, Mamiru Kai and her constant advances.
Appearance[]
A4 is a tall young man with black, combed hair and uneven bangs. When on duty, he sports a black suit and red tie, as well as rubber gloves. While disguised as "Suzuki", his usual attire consists of a regular business suit and tie with a vest underneath. A4 also wears a pair of glasses that are, in fact, a communication device.
While disguising himself in order to follow Uragi on the street, A4 wears a rubber mask of an old man with white beard, a flat cap and a winter coat. In this disguise, he also appears shorter than usual.
Trivia[]
- A4 can be in many ways considered an early version of Loid Forger, the main protagonist of Tatsuya Endo's hit manga series Spy × Family, and shares a lot of similarities with him:
- Both characters are spies who work for their respective countries' governments, and are undercover in public under a fake name.
- Both characters are master of disguises who use rubber masks in order to assume another appearance.
- Both characters are given the tasks of targetting a corrupt politician, who in Loid's case is the former Ostanian prime minister, Donovan Desmond.
- Both characters have similar personalities, being cold, stoic and usually putting their job as a spy over their own personal life.
- Both characters are also bad at expressing their feelings, in A4's case being his romantic feelings for Mamiru Kai and in Loid's being his genuine feelings towards his fake family.
- Additionally, both characters are accompanied by black-haired, clumsy girls who are bad at cooking and secretly harbor feelings for them (Mamiru-chan and Yor Forger).
- Despite being technically the main character, Tatsuya Endo, the author of the one-shot has said in an interview that he "does not feel anything" towards him and says that, in his mind, Mamiru Kai is the protagonist.
- Suzuki's laptop in his office has the brand "USO", which is a japanese for a lie.
- Suzuki's codename "A4" comes from the name for the standard paper size. The codenames for his mentor and Mamiru Kai, B3 and B5 also come from paper sizes.
