AWACS Thunderhead is a supporting character in the video game Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. He is an air control operator who served in the Osean Air Defense Force during the Circum-Pacific War.
He was voiced by Kirk Thornton, who also played Shadow the Hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, in the English dub, and by Mahito Ohba in the Japanese dub.
Biography[]
On September 24, 2010, Wardog Squadron came under fire from unidentified aircraft. While Thunderhead, observing the situation, ordered the Wardog planes to hold fire, the pilots disobeyed his orders and fired back. After a war broke out between Osea and Yuktobania, he continued to provide Osean forces, Wardog Squadron in particular, with support throughout many missions, including the evacuation of the 3rd Osean Naval Fleet, defense of Sand Island, Osean counterattack on Yuktobanian territory and the destruction of the Hrimfaxi submarine.
Eventually, however, the Grey Men, in an attempt to take the Wardog out of the picture and thus prolong the war, convinced a number of Osean military personnel, Thunderhead included, that the aces were traitors. Thunderhead assisted the "8492nd Squadron", which was actually the Grey Men-affiliated Grabacr Squadron, in pursuing the runaway aces, and was eventually tricked by them into believing that they got killed. It's unknown what happened to Thunderhead after that.
Personality[]
Thunderhead was bad at his job as an AWACS, and wasn't respected by some of the pilots he worked with, such as Chopper and Swordsman. The AWACS had a particularly hostile relationship with the former, often arguing with him during the missions. In spite of this, he trusted the Wardog Squadron and respected them: in particular, he believed Blaze when he claimed his squadron was framed for an attack on civilians, grieved over Chopper's death and sounded broken when the Wardogs were declared traitors.
