Abby Abominable is one of the two protagonists of the 2012 computer-animated made-for-television Christmas special Abominable Christmas. She is the daughter of the Abominable Dad and the sister of Adam Abominable.
She was voiced by Ariel Winter, who voiced Penny Peterson in the 2014 DreamWorks’ film Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Smurf Lily from the 2017 Sony Pictures Animation movie Smurfs: The Lost Village and Princess Sofia in Sofia the First.
Personality[]
Abby is a playful, friendly and optimistic yeti with a strong curiosity and excitement for the human holiday of Christmas. However, this curiosity can lead to problems for both herself and her family—as seen as her father warns her of the dangers of being out in the open where humans could possibly capture them all, and inevitably the nasty Margaret Knowhow soon is hot on their trail.
Despite this, between her and her brother, Abby also proves to be the more optimistic and clever of the two. This is shown how she gets the idea for her and Adam to pose as a couple of dogs and hide out with a human family to avoid capture from Margaret.
Abby is playful, as she enjoys having fun with her new human friend, Lilly Winterbottom, whether it be decorating the Christmas tree or dancing to music on the radio. She’s also rather mischievous, as seen when she purposely steps on her brother’s head while they’re decorating the tree, or humiliating Margaret, especially during a chase in which she dumps a pile of snow on top of her to slow her down.
Appearance[]
Abby is a small female yeti white skin and fur, complete with bangs and pigtails, a hairless face, hands and face, big blue eyes, long eyelashes, a small, brown bear-like nose and muzzle, small sharp fangs and teeth, a lighter tummy, and a small puffy tail.
Role in the film[]
Abby is first seen admiring the view of a small human town in a valley below the mountains where she lives with her brother, Adam, and their father, much to Adam’s fear and worry. She is startled by a sudden growling and is grabbed by an unseen creature, that turns out to be their father. He scolds Abby for being out where people could possibly spot them, but Abby tells him that she wishes to celebrate Christmas herself, as they never have done so before. Dad explains that Christmas isn’t about lights, presents and music, but it’s about family, which means staying safe. He heads off to catch fish for dinner and tells the kids to stay safe.
Later, Abby and Adam spot Margaret Knowhow, a scientist determined to prove the existence of yetis, out looking for them. Abby attempts to head down the mountain so as to lead her away from her family, but Adam tries to stop her. They end up being spotted by Margaret, and escape the evil woman by grabbing a large piece of ice and using it as a sled to slide down the mountain. Abby and Adam find themselves in the front yard of a human house. Abby gets an idea; she and Adam will pose as a couple of dogs and hide with the human family in order to avoid Margaret. Adam protests against this idea, but Abby insists.
The little girl of the human family, Lilly Winterbottom, sees the two outside and lets them inside. She asks her father if she can have two dogs, to which her father agrees (only because he’s much too involved in a business call). Lilly carries in a plate of Christmas cookies, which excites Abby so much that she ultimately blows their cover. Instead being frightened, Lilly is overjoyed to have “talking dogs,” and Abby explains that she and her brother are really abominable snowmen.
Abby learns from Lilly that her mother died a long time ago, which she can relate as her mother is gone too. The children proceed to decorate the Christmas tree, but soon there is a knock at the door. It’s Margaret, still looking for Abby and her brother. She explains to Mr. Winterbottom that she’s looking for “furry, white creatures,” but he ultimately dismisses her. He compliments Lilly on how great the Christmas tree looks, and finally sees the two snowkids. He tells her that they must be returned to Margaret, under the impression that she’s their “owner.” Lilly begs him not to, especially after hearing she’ll cage them and perform research on them. Mr. Winterbottom agrees, saying that they can stay until the real owner is located.
Lilly introduces Abby and Adam to sugary confections. Abby enjoys them, but Adam is overcome by a stomachache. Lilly then turns on the radio, and the three begins to dance to the music, to which even Mr. Winterbottom joins in.
That evening, Abby and Adam join Lilly and her father to meet Santa Claus in the town square, and discover that the Santa in question is actually their father (who went out looking for them earlier, was captured by the local dogcatcher, and secretly escaped, taking a co-worker’s Santa suit for a disguise). However, before they can reunite with their father, they’re spotted once more by Margaret, and they all escape back to the Winterbottoms’ house. A furious Mr. Winterbottom demands an explanation from Lilly as to why they all suddenly ran off. This prompts Abby to stand up for her friend and she speaks for the first time to her father, telling him it’s not Lilly’s fault, much to Mr. Winterbottom’s surprise.
After hearing about Abby and Adam’s situation, Mr. Winterbottom says that the most important thing to do is to get the snowkids back to their father, as he may be worried about them. Margaret arrives at the front door at that moment with the dogcatcher, who claims that there are stray animals in his residence. Mr. Winterbottom comforts Abby and Adam, telling them that they will spring them from the animal shelter as soon as possible, but in the meantime, they’ll be safe from Margaret. So, the snowkids are inevitably taken to the animal shelter.
That night, after meeting the kids father, Mr. Winterbottom and Dad set out to rescue Abby and Adam, but they’re ultimately captured by the dogcatcher and locked up along with the kids, who are delighted to see their dad again. Abby apologizes for getting them all into this predicament, but Dad comforts her, telling her that most important of all they’re together again. Margaret arrives to hopefully claim the yetis at last for herself, but Lilly and Matt arrive shortly after her, handing the dogcatcher the legal paperwork giving the Winterbottoms custody of the yetis. Margaret attempts to stop them, but Abby charges at her, knocking her into a shelf and causing a pile of pet food cans to fall on top of her. The dogcatcher keeps Margaret at bay with his taser, and the kids, their dad and the Winterbottoms take their leave.
Before the kids and Dad head back home, Lilly invites them to join her family for Christmas dinner. Afterwards, Abby tells Lilly she has a gift for her; she brings out a puppy from the animal shelter, as a means of saying thank you for all the Winterbottoms have done for her family.
