Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."

What makes you think you can trust him? What makes you think you can believe anything my brother told you? In all the time you knew him, did he ever mention my name? Did he ever mention hers?
~ Abrerforth Dumbledore to Harry Potter.
It's not a job my brother's given you. It's a suicide mission. Do yourself a favor, boy, and go home. Live a little longer.
~ Aberforth to Harry, discussing Albus' mission.

Aberforth Dumbledore (b. c. 1884) is a supporting character from the Harry Potter franchise.

He was an English half-blood wizard, the second son of Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, younger brother of Albus, older brother of Ariana, and biological father of Aurelius. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry between 1895 and 1902. His father — who had been sentenced to prison for attacking three Muggles — died in Azkaban when Aberforth was young, and his mother and sister were later accidentally killed. Aberforth blamed his brother Albus for the death of their sister, Ariana, and thus their relationship was rather strained. However many years later after Albus' death he decided to make amends with him by helping defeat Lord Voldemort.

He was portrayed by the late Jim McManus in Order of the Phoenix, Ciarán Hinds (who also voiced Pabbie in Frozen) in Deathly Hollows, and Richard Coyle young in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

Personality[]

Aberforth generally seemed cynical and bad-tempered, such as when he sarcastically pointed out to Harry Potter how little Albus had really told him even while putting an enormous responsibility on his shoulders. However, despite this, Aberforth displayed an astonishing amount of bravery and remarkable amount of morality that held firm even when it came to his family despite his cynical and rough personality.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Aberforth Dumbledore was born around 1884 to the British wizard and witch Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, and is the younger brother to Albus and older brother to Ariana. The family suffered their first tragedy when Ariana was attacked by three muggles, resulting in her losing control of her magic and becoming a Obscurial. In retaliation, Percival cursed the muggles and sent to Azkaban, but refused to explain why he did so Ariana wouldn't be sent away. Despite this, the family moved to Godric's Hollow where Aberforth and Kendra raised Ariana while Albus attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In 1895, Aberforth attended Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor, but lived in Albus' shadow during his time there.

In the summer of 1899, another tragedy struck the Dumbledore family with the accidental death of Kendra by Ariana, who lost control of her magic once again. During that same summer, Albus befriended Gellert Grindelwald and the two formed a plan to start a revolution to oppress muggle-kind. Learning of this, Aberforth confronted his brother for his plans and for neglecting the care of their sister. During the confrontation, Aberforth, Albus and Gellert started a three-way duel that ended with Ariana dying from a stray curse. Aberforth blamed Albus for Ariana's deat and never forgive him until learning of his brother's guilt decades later.

While grieving, he started a romantic relationship with an unnamed woman and they had a son together named Aurelius Dumbledore. The woman was later sent away from Godric's Hollow, and Aurelius was taken to America and later adopted by the abusive No-Maj Mary Lou Barebone. After graduating from Hogwarts around 1902, Aberforth became the owner and barman of the Hog's Head Inn in Hogsmeade.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore[]

In 1932, Aberforth was greeted by Albus, who explained that Aurelius was suffering from Obscurial and sided with Grindewald and his army. While reluctant at first, Aberforth helped his brother protect his son and break the blood pact made between Albus and Grindewlad. After the battle, the barman reunited with Aurelius and brought him home.

The First Wizarding War[]

At the start of the First Wizarding War, Aberforth joined the Order of the Phoenix to fight against the dark wizard Lord Voldermort and his army. In 1980, Aberforth caught Severus Snape eavesdropping on a meeting between Albus and the seer Sybill Trelawney and threw him out. Unbeknownst to the barman at the time, Snape overheard half of the prophecy and informed his master. After the war ended with Voldermort's defeat, Dumbledore was prosecuted for enchanting goats but didn't go into hiding despite the scandal.

Role in the series[]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix[]

Aberforth first appears in Order of Phoenix, serving students who were waiting for Harry Potter's arrival to discuss about learning defensive magic.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows[]

Following Albus' death by Snape, Aberforth started to help Hogwarts students by giving them safety and supplies.
