Abi Franklin is a fictional character and major protagonist of the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. She debuted in October 2017 and became one of the show's central protagonists from 2018-2023 onwards since then.

She has been portrayed by Sally Carman.

History

Abi Franklin first came to Weatherfield in 2018 just months after being reacquainted with her wayward son Seb Franklin in October 2017. It transpired that Abi was a drug addict who was struggling to look after her other two children, Charlie and Lexi, for a while now. Soon enough the twins are taken into foster care and Abi strives to overcome her drug addict.

In 2018, she visits Seb and attempts to reconcile with him. This initially fails when Seb catches his mother attempting to steal cash to relapse her drug addiction and chucks her out. It is then Seb goes into hiding in order to prevent his villainous boss, Pat Phelan, from tracking him down after Seb had discovered that Phelan killed local mechanic Luke Britton the other day. Abi later encounters Phelan and he pays her to help acquire his whereabouts. This doesn't happen in the end, and Seb eventually helps Phelan's sworn nemesis Gary Windass expose the truth about Luke's murder along with Phelan's other crimes - such as the fact that Phelan raped Gary's mother Anna Windass before framing her for intentionally putting Seb in hospital, kidnapped and murdered his partner-in-crime Vinny Ashford, killed Luke's best-friend Andy Carver after holding him captive in a cellar for months, and caused the death of Andy's surrogate father Michael Rodwell by leaving him to die from a fatal heart attack.

After Phelan's death in late Spring 2018, Abi reunites with Seb and they reconcile with the help from Phelan's widow Eileen Grimshaw and his daughter Nicola Rubinstein. It is then Abi begins to settle herself in Weatherfield to the point of befriending local residents such as Sally Webster and Tracy Barlow. In 2019, however, Abi briefly falls out with Seb when they have a disagreement over the custody of her twin children when she believes they are better off without her because of her past as a drug addict.

In 2020, Abi embarks on a feud against greedy businessman Ray Crosby. They started off having a relationship until Abi found out that Ray is a sleazy lothario who sexually harrasses women to the point of forcing them to sign gagging orders to stop them from exposing his true colors, as well as the fact that he has merely been using her to advance his own public image. Abi and Ray soon become sworn enemies, which soon involves Sally's former husband Kevin Webster in the process. By then, Kevin and Abi have developed romantic feelings for each other and he too resents Ray for humilating Abi.

Towards the end of the year, Abi leads a campaign against Ray when everyone learns that he is planning to demolish Weatherfield to execute his business expansion scheme and make money by forcing people out of their homes. While attempting to stop Ray's money-making scheme, Abi befriends his other enemy Alya Nazir and supports her when the latter is attempting to exonerate her grandmother Yasmeen Nazir for the attempted murder of the latter's abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe. She later wins the support of Geoff's heroic son Tim Metcalfe by locking Geoff in his house to stop him from ruining Tim's wedding to Sally. Weeks after Geoff's death in December 2020, Abi eventually manages to expose Ray's scheme and stop his campaign with help from her friend Roy Cropper along with Tim's daughter Faye Windass due to Ray's attempt to rape Faye earlier on.

In May 2021, Abi is devastated when Seb is killed by high-school student Corey Brent in a hate crime attack. She works together with Seb's girlfriend Nina Lucas, who was the victim of Corey's attack but survived, along with her girlfriend Asha Alahan in bringing Corey to justice for Seb's murder. This eventually works successfuly and Corey is arrested before getting jailed for Seb's murder, despite the efforts of Corey's father Stefan Brent to prevent that from happening. Abi then resents Corey's ex-girlfriend Kelly Neelan for her involvement in Seb's murder, but soon forgives her after seeing Kelly's turmoil over recent events. That same year, Abi marries Kevin and she becomes a surrogate mother to his young son Jack.

In 2022, however, Abi's marriage with Kevin is threatened when she is revealed to have slept with Kelly's foster father Imran Habeeb in a one-night stand weeks after Corey's trial. Kevin eventually learns the truth about the betrayal, as does Imran's fiance Toyah Battersby. At the same time, Abi is pregnant with Imran's child and she gives birth to their son Alfie. It is then Imran gets killed in a car crash and Abi reconciles with Kevin after coming to terms with Imran's death.
