My estates, my titles, my own life―it's all forfeit now. All in the name of preserving the Empire. I swear by all the gods, Mannimarco will pay dearly for this.
~ Abnur expressing his hatred for Mannimarco towards the Vestige.
It's a simple process. A child of five could do it. Unfortunately, we don't have a child of five, so I'll be forced to walk you through it.
~ Abnur Tharn.

Abnur Tharn is a major protagonist in The Elder Scrolls Online. serving as a major protagonist in both the main questline and the Season of the Dragon storyline.

He is a member of the powerful noble family, House Tharn, and is an influential figure within the Imperial Empire. He served as an advisor to Varen Aquilarios and is the chief member of the Five Companions. He assisted in trying to get Varen become Dragonborn as to legitimize his rule over the Empire, however, the ritual went wrong with Mannimarco using the opportunity to destroy the barrier between Oblivion and Nirn as to start Molag Bal's invasion.

He was voiced by Alfred Molina, who played The Duke from Solar Opposites, Roadkill from Rango, Viggo Grimborn from Dragons: Race to the Edge, and Doctor Octopus from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man.

Personality[]

Lyris Titanborn: "You must be the ugliest princess ever rescued from a tower, Tharn.

Abnur Tharn: "I'm shocked your lack of education and repeated blows to the head haven't dulled your wit, Titanborn.

~ Abnur and Lyris insulting each other.

The best way to describe Abnur Tharn is through the archetype of the arrogant mage considering Abnur is a highly arrogant man with a sense of condescension. Given his age, it's obvious he values his knowledge and power but the way he expresses it comes off as egotistical and power-hungry. Not surprising considering his family hold a very power-hungry attitude in the world of politics and always trying to find some benefits for themselves. Anytime he interacts with someone, Abnur always belittles them and their intelligence as a way to flex his superiority and acts as if he knows everything then anyone else. A good example of this is how he treats Sai Sahan and Lyris Titanborn.

With Lyris, Abnur mocks her brutish personality and her intelligence feeling that she lacks restraint in what she says and reacts. At one point, he called her a brutish she-troll for punching him in the face. Both of them often argue back and forth while exchanging insults at each other, Lyris will express much of her dislike towards him while Abnur does the same towards her. With Sai, Abnur is pretty cruel towards him as he mocks him at every turn to the point that Sai took his insults personally. When being tortured by the Duchess of Anguish, Sai is continuously attacked by an illusion of Abnur who's throwing malicious insults at him about his failures. If the Vestige choose Abnur as a partner to save Sai, Abnur will be surprised that Sai took what he said so personally because he viewed adults should not care what people say about them and that he was speaking his mind. He even admits to enjoy mocking him. This illustrates that Abnur can be careless on what he says to others without considering their feelings.

Despite all his negative attributes, Abnur genuinely cares for the Empire and does everything he can to preserve it while trying to save many innocent lives in the process. Unlike his evil family, Abnur does everything he can to help people and does have a sense of morality despite his shrewd personality. He doesn't seem to care at the idea that his family name will be erased due to his "defection" to Mannimarco because, in his own words, "The Empire is all that matters to me. I will do what I must to ensure its survival." Abnur only defected so Mannimarco wouldn't use much of his power to ruin more lives during his take over of the Imperial City. He even detests Mannimarco as a person and used his position to save lives from Mannimarco's reign, kinda like a spy of sorts. A good example would be when he went out of his way to give Lyris her axe back and gave her some advice when the Vestige was rescuing her in Coldharbour. He was concern over Mannimarco's plan of becoming a god and wanted to help the Vestige and his allies find the Amulet of Kings before Mannimarco gets to it first. Abnur is also willing to criticize each of his family members for their part in the Planemeld once he finds their souls in Coldharbour and his half-sister, Euraxia, abusive rule of Rimmen, a city in Elsweyr.

Appearance[]

Abnur Tharn is a 164 year old Imperial with white hair and blue eyes. In the main story, he wears the Imperial Chancellor outfit and holds a crescent staff, which represents his position within the Empire and how experience he is in the field of politics and magic. In the Elsweyr storyline, Abnur wears golden armor with a red sash around it and a red outfit underneath the armor and wields a golden staff with an eagle on it.

Trivia[]

  • Despite his very deliberate arrogant attitude towards most characters, Abnur is well liked by the Elder Scrolls fanbase and is considered to be one of the best characters in ESO due to Alfred Molina's voice performance and his genuine goal of trying to preserve the Empire.
  • According to the original drafts of ESO's storyline, Abnur was going to be the main villain of the game where he plans to harness the energy of an item called the Zero Stone of the Adamantine Tower. In a climax, Abnur would turn Lyris into an undead servant before being killed by the hero. Old preview videos claim that he tortured Queen Ayrenn at one point. However, all of this was scrapped with Abnur now being written as an anti-hero, the main antagonist position was then given to Mannimarco.
