Any objections, Lady?
~ Adam Malkovich's catchphrase
Samus! What's going on? Respond! Respond!
~ Adam calling to Samus during a Game Over sequence
Samus, continue your investigation at that sector.
~ One of Adam's orders

Adam Malkovich is a major character in the Metroid franchise. He is a commander in the Galactic Federation and the former commanding officer of Samus Aran, who shows a great deal of respect and admiration towards him. Following his death during the Bottle Ship incident caused by MB, his mind was programmed into an artificial intelligence, whom Samus nicknamed ADAM.

In Japanese he was voiced by Rikiya Koyama and in English by Dave Elvin in Metroid: Other M.

Appearance[]

Adam Malkovich is a human who is tan skinned, has deep brown hair and has dark eyes. He wears an admiral outfit consisting of a hat that is blue and white with a blue Galactic Federation symbol. He wears a blue coat, white shirt with gold buttons connecting on the side of his jacket. He wears white pants, white shoes and golden line on his coat.

When he is leading the Platoon, he wears a standard Galactic Federation Power Suit which is blue, gray, and black and the visor is orange.

Personality[]

Adam Malkovich is gruff, harsh, and tactical military mind that can be relentless in criticism toward soldiers training under his command. Although he was particularly hard on Samus Aran during her time as a federation soldier, he was so because he held confidence in her capabilities and respected her determination against giving up. When giving mission briefs to Samus, Adam would usually end them with the sentence "Any objections, Lady?" as a reference to her determined and rebellious traits.

Despite his demeanor, Adam cares for his troops and does not like to put them in impossible situations. This was most evident when he made the hard decision to sacrifice the life of his brother rather than risk the welfare of his soldiers; a decision which caused Samus to leave the military to become a bounty hunter. Adam is also shown not to be afraid of putting himself in harm's way for the well-being of others.

History[]

Past[]

During Samus's days in the Federation Police, Adam is one of the few people who understood her according to Samus herself. He was a good friend of hers as well as her surrogate father-figure to her and he would sometimes "joke" with Samus often ending the briefing with "Any objections, Lady?" which was denoted as a sign of trust as Samus describes it. But in Metroid: Other M Samus will give a "thumbs down" for both reasons, showing she doesn't appreciate being called a lady and understanding the mission briefings, whereas the other troopers gave a "thumbs up" gesture.

It wasn't until one day, when his younger brother, Ian was trying to repair the drive unit of the Lusitania with 300 people on board, but it quickly malfunctioned and on the verge of explosion. Samus tries to persuade Adam to give her time to save Ian from the unit, but Adam issues the order to disengage the Lusitania anyway, with Ian still inside and the latter dies in the process. It was that incident that led Samus to leave the Federation to become an independent bounty hunter. Her Federation buddy, Anthony Higgs on the other hand, stayed within the unit.

Metroid: Other M[]

When the events of Other M began, Adam received the Baby's Cry signal coming from the BOTTLE SHIP and he forms the 07th Platoon consisting of Anthony Higgs, Lyle Smithsonian, Maurice Favreau, James Pierce, and K.G. Misawa and they head out to investigate what was happening there. They run into Samus Aran, who also happened to have picked up on the distress call. He refuses to share their reasons of coming here with Samus as he refers to her as an outsider and orders the team not to give any details to her while. As Samus notes, Adam merely frowns at her for opening the Red Blast Shield, because her he didn't authorize her use of Missiles. They are soon attacked by the Brug Mass, to Lyle's horror, as Adam orders them to use their Freeze Guns to bring it down. Adam allows Samus to be a part of the team under the condition that she complies to his orders, and she will only use her power-ups when he authorizes them. Adam remains at the BOTTLE SHIP Control Room as he sends the Platoon to different locations of the ship to find survivors and permits them to use anything they can because of the impending threat. The communication systems are not operational with the exception of Samus's which Adam would keep an eye on her.

Samus and the Platoon would regroup at the Biosphere, (minus Adam who is monitoring them and Lyle who mysteriously did not show up) and discovered the corpse of a Zebesian Space Pirate. Maurice gets the computer working and managed to uncover the evidence that the Galactic Federation has been tampering with bioweapons which is strongly against the law and finds the name of the director on the BOTTLE SHIP: Madeline Bergman. Samus refrains from going any further on the matter as Adam was passionately against the use of bioweapons and using life forms for unnecessary purposes, with the belief that all life should remain untampered. Samus thought back of the time when she delivered the Baby Metroid to the Galactic Federation for study and believed that Adam would not have approved of it. After that, Samus is ambushed by the Zebesians and Adam tells the Platoon to vacate the area while Samus deals with the threats. After repelling the Mystery Creature, Adam suggests that she should look for the Mystery Creature in the Pyrosphere and later to search for surviving innocents in the Cryosphere, but when it was apparent that the Mystery Creature is extremely dangerous, he tells her to search for it and use her Plasma Gun when she finds it. After Samus came to Anthony's rescue when he was nearly killed by a Rhedogian, he asks Samus about her thoughts on Adam, which she recalls the fateful day that he sacrificed his little brother and regardless of what they thought then, they realized that they wouldn't have been alive if Adam didn't take that measure.

Samus arrives at the Geothermal Power Plant where the lighting was very dim, and Anthony Higgs happened to be there as well. Adam allows her to use her Super Missiles to open the Magma eruption port and the lava managed to light the room and it was there that Samus goes into a state of shock by the presence of Ridley, who had evolved from the Mystery Creature. Adam tries to get through to Samus to get her to stay focused and use her Plasma Gun, but he is suddenly ambushed by the Deleter, and his earphone gets badly damaged, cutting off further communication with Samus. Only Anthony was able to confront Ridley to give Samus enough time to snap out of her state before he is defeated and she was able to best Ridley, who then fled from her. Samus then finds that she is unable to contact Adam and came to the revelation that he may have been aware of everything that has happened before he arrived on the BOTTLE SHIP. She deduces that the Deleter views Adam as a huge threat and while he might hold his own against the assassin, she still believed that he is in danger. She then pursues the Deleter to which he disables the bridge to stop her from tracking him, but it proved to be fruitless as without any communication with Adam or him observing her, Samus then "authorizes" the Space Jump and Screw attack without his input to get across without any problems to reach the Bioweapon Research Center.

In the hope of confronting the mysterious assassin, Samus finds the blonde woman she ran into earlier, she managed to get her to trust her, and the woman claims to be Madeline Bergman, and she goes on to explain that the Galactic Federation is planning on creating an army after the Space Pirates since the destruction of Zebes, including its former inhabitants and the Metroids and an A.I. called MB. She then reveals that Adam had authorized the project and it was then that Samus heads to Sector Zero to take out MB and the Metroids. Samus then comes across a young Metroid at the entrance of Sector Zero, which reminds of the baby. She is shot by a Freeze Gun owned by Adam which disabled her Varia Suit and shot the larva before it could attack her. When Samus awakens, she becomes annoyed with Adam for this action, but he then explains that he is trying to prevent her from going into Sector Zero which contains unfreezable Metroids which she would not be able to destroy. The development of the bioweapons with glaring weaknesses would be suicide, so the Sector Zero Metroids were designed to not have their usual weakness to extreme lows through genetic engineering. Wanting answers, Samus asks why he is credited as the creator of the Metroid military program report, Adam explains that he was requested by the Galactic Federation HQ to write up a report which he wrote of the dangers behind a project like this. Even when the HQ had listened, a small group in the Federation co-opted his report for their own goals and the scientists were able to go on with it. As he realized how much of a threat the Metroids were and how it was wise to have their population wiped out and the threat that MB posed on the BOTTLE SHIP, he makes the decision to head inside Sector Zero and destroy it himself. By doing this, he would cause enough damage in the Sector to make it detach from the ship which would self-destruct with a probability of death upon himself being guaranteed. He then gives Samus his last orders, to prevent the BOTTLE SHIP from intercepting the Galactic Federation HQ, ensure the safety of a survivor that he found in Room MW in the Biosphere Research Center and to destroy Ridley and adds that the blonde woman that she encountered was an enemy. In spite of this, Samus protests against him going into Sector Zero and offers to do it herself as to not lose him as they did Ian, but Adam still insists that he should go through with it and adds that she has been the galaxy's only hope and is capable of deposing of Ridley while he is just a human who can at least do what he can to protect her. After making an apology for being a little rough with her, he proceeds to enter the sector. Samus tries to prevent him from doing the deed, but she was still in her weakened state and unable to do so as Adam's last words to her being, "No objections, right Lady?" which she replies with a thumbs down. As expected, Sector Zero has been detached from the BOTTLE SHIP which then detonates with Adam still inside. The man that Samus knew was the closest he has been to a father had lost his life and she is the only one who watched it happen. Adam since then had appeared in flashbacks for the remainder of the game, during the battle with the Metroid Queen.

After that, Samus has returned to the Galactic Federation HQ, she recalled the events that had happened on the BOTTLE SHIP and the images of Adam being formed from space dust, dispersing when her Gunship passed through them. She looks out the window from the HQ as she heard Adam's voice in her head and knows at this moment that he made the right decision similar with the Ian incident. She gives Adam a thumbs up as she promised not to waste time grieving for him. Anthony Higgs, the only survivor in the 07th Platoon, jokingly gave her a thumbs down in response, which caused her to make a statement that compared him with Adam, having found another person who understood her as much as Adam did.

During the ending, the Galactic Federation agreed that the BOTTLE SHIP should be destroyed, so Samus hurries back to the BOTTLE SHIP to retrieve an irreplaceable item, which happens to be Adam's helmet. It was shown that much earlier Adam had witnessed the conversation with Samus and the blonde woman, who was actually the android, MB and when he saw her making the decision to go to Sector Zero, he gathered his weapons and rushes to stop her while leaving the helmet behind. Upon arrival, Samus deactivates her Power Suit she retrieves the helmet and holds it close to herself before her moment was interrupted by the BOTTLE SHIP's self-destruct alarm and while still in her Zero Suit, she managed to escape the BOTTLE SHIP with Adam's helmet in tow before it was utterly destroyed as her Gunship flies off in a distance.

Trivia[]

  • Adam Malkovich is the only member of the 07th Platoon to survive his encounter with the Deleter.
  • Adam Malkovich's portrayal in Metroid: Other M was one of the major aspects in the game that have been heavily criticized by fans for his many questionable decisions that led to most of his troops in the 07th Platoon to their demises through trekking the BOTTLE SHIP alone which made them more vulnerable to rogue hostiles, which both Samus and Anthony in particular, had their lives endangered at best. Another criticism was his condescending treatment of Samus Aran which he gave several impressions that he is disregarding her many accomplishments, forbidding her use of her many power-ups, and took a long time to authorize the Varia feature as Samus was being scorched by the extreme heat, as well as shooting at Samus's back, rendering her vulnerable, during her encounter with a Metroid larva.
    • It didn't help that it contradicted how the Samus describes him in Metroid Fusion as well as the Metroid Manga series where he was depicted as being more of a reasonable authority figure who treats Samus much better and was more supportive of her leaving the Federation when he acknowledges that it was hindering her potential while reminding her that she is still a lady and advises her not to lose sight of her own humanity.
