I am the Warlock, mum, and I am done with being ordered around!
~ Adam Warlock becoming angry at Ayesha for ordering him to kill Blurp.

Adam Warlock is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third and final installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

Adam first appeared as a credits scene character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, revealed to have been a Sovereign created by Ayesha to destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy after Rocket had stolen batteries from her and got away after her being defeated. With the Sovereign under the eye of their creator, the High Evolutionary, who wanted to kidnap Rocket for his own hidden purposes, Adam is released from his birth pod prematurely and travels to Knowhere to seize Rocket. After failing, the High Evolutionary could not accept criticism for his impulsive action of letting Adam out early, and threatens to kill all of the Sovereign should they not remain subservient to him.

Over the course of the film, his compassion for his mother, who is later killed by the High Evolutionary, and living creatures hints of a possible redemption, and after being saved by Groot, Adam no longer had any hatred for the Guardians and shows up to save Star-Lord's life at the end of the film. Adam is revealed in a post-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to now be a new member of the Guardians himself, alongside Cosmo, Kraglin, Phyla, and his new pet, Blurp.

He is portrayed by Will Poulter, who also portrays Eustace Scrubb in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Kenny Rossmore in We're the Millers, Gally in The Maze Runner and Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Jim Bridger in The Revenant, Philip Krauss in Detroit, Roderick "Roddy" Ayres in The Little Stranger, Colin Ritman in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Mark in Midsommar, and Billy Cutler in Dopesick, and voices and motion-captures Andrew, Anthony Clarke, and Abraham Alastor in The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope.

Personality[]

Despite being the size of an adult, Adam is shown and stated to have the mind of a child. Being naïve due to being taken out of his birth pod prematurely, he appears dense when it comes to social interaction, as when his mother asks him to show the Ravager being interrogated that they mean business, instead of coercing the man to give out information like he's supposed to, he shoots a beam of energy at him and kills him. He is only accustomed to being a Sovereign, and because of this, he is highly proud of his race and wanted to hold the Guardians accountable for what they did to his mother, whom he is shown to be fiercely protective of.

He possessed very little villainous traits prior to his redemption, as he only showed violence towards the Guardians because he believed in his mother's moral righteousness, and is otherwise shown to be a compassionate individual towards even lower lifeforms. After killing a Ravager, he feels guilt for killing the owner of his pet, and adopted Blurp. He noted that he felt a strange sense of kindness around the little creature, and refused to kill it, despite his mother's orders, which first demonstrates his increasing ability to think for himself, and care for innocent beings.

When he is rescued by Groot, he sees the Guardians are also deserving of a second chance, even if he is not convinced they are completely innocent, and he saves Star-Lord's life after he had risked his life saving the creatures captured on the High Evolutionary's ship, showing impressive moral development. From his personality at the beginning of the film to the ending, when he becomes a Guardian, Adam shows rapid moral development much like a child, but he is still learning to adopt the social customs of people, such as when he learns about hugging in the celebration after saving Star-Lord.

History[]

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2[]

In a mid-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ayesha is shown telling her chambermaid that she is in the process of creating a being capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy. She decides to name him "Adam".

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3[]

Adam is taken out of his cocoon before Ayesha can finish developing it by the High Evolutionary, the creator of the Sovereign. Hasty to retrieve Rocket Raccoon, an escaped specimen of his who possesses the intelligence necessary to form a more peaceful society of bio-engineered creatures, he sends Adam on a mission to avenge his mother and capture Rocket. He arrives tackling Rocket from the sky, but after Rocket escaped, he is attacked by Nebula, followed by Groot. After defeating both of them, Kraglin tried to stab his face with his Yaka Arrow, hidden from sight, but the arrow caused no damage whatsoever to Adam. He continues searching for Rocket, calling whoever threw the arrow a baby.

When he finds Rocket again, he subdues him with a blast of energy and breaks Mantis' arm when she tries to intervene. He is then attacked by Star-Lord and Drax, and is forced to enter a barbaric duel with the latter. Adam overpowers Drax and repeatedly beats him to a pulp, but Drax was saved when Nebula impales Adam with her sword and forces him to retreat.

Back at Counter-Earth, the High Evolutionary is furious at Adam for his failure and tortures him for speaking back to him, sending him flying up against a metal wall with his powers. Ayesha begs for a second chance as he tortures Adam, and he decides to refrain from killing Adam or any of the Sovereign as he had threatened to do. Adam begins working for the High Evolutionary for the preservation of his species, and works with the Orgosentries to find Rocket after the Guardians had infiltrated OrgoCorp to find a key to save Rocket from the death switch that was discovered when they tried to heal him from Adam's attack.

The Guardians fly to Counter-Earth to find Theel, who is suspected of having the key for it. Ayesha and Warlock follow them there in their ship, and Adam infiltrates their ship, which he finds War Pig on. Adam kills a surprised War Pig, telling them that he needs the credit so he can succeed in his mission and prevent the High Evolutionary from destroying him and his species. After the High Evolutionary decides to destroy the planet for failing to meets his standards, Adam flies at top speed to rescue his mother, but fails. A tired and distraught Adam flies back onto the ship after the planet had now been destroyed. He awakens some time after Rocket had been successfully saved, and tries to attack the two Guardians on the ship in a last-ditch effort to win. He relents in spite of his desperation when Gamora threatens to kill his pet Blurp if he tries to attack them, and Star-Lord rigs the ship to self-destruct. He and Gamora leave the ship with Adam left to die.

After being rescued by Groot, he asks why he saved him, to which he replies "I am Groot." Drax tells Adam that what he means is that everyone deserves a second chance. Inspired by this, Adam saves Star-Lord despite him having previously tried to kill him, who was on the verge of dying in the freezing vacuum of space after risking his life saving the animals and Star Children aboard the High Evolutionary's ship by boarding. When Star-Lord is hugged by various people, Adam joins in, despite being confused. Adam is later seen wrapped in a blanket, happily smiling while everyone was dancing to the song "Dog Days Are Over".

After the original Guardians go their separate ways, Peter returning to Earth to be with his grandfather, Drax and Nebula remaining on Knowhere to raise the Star Children, and Mantis leaving with the Abilisks to go on her own adventures, Adam is seen as a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy, now led by Rocket. The Guardians were hired to protect a Krylorian town from a stampede of creatures, and while idling, they discussed their favorite music artists. Adam remarked that he admired Adrian Belew as an artist, stating that both his solo work and his work with King Crimson was good. When asked about his own music tastes, Rocket introduces the song "Come and Get Your Love", which was the last song they heard before the creatures arrived and they charged into battle.

Trivia[]

  • Adam states in a post-credits scene that he is a fan of real-life musician Adrian Belew, "both solo, and his work with King Crimson", which shows he has come quite a long way from being the naïve child completely oblivious to life outside of his home with the Sovereign.
  • The scene in which Adam saves Star-Lord from freezing in outer space is a reference to Michelangelo's painting The Creation of Adam, which also features a character named Adam. However, this is ironic because in the painting, God reaches out to Adam, but in this scene, Adam is the one reaching out to a frozen Star-Lord.
  • Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and director James Gunn have both confirmed that Adam is planned to play "a pivotal role" in "the cosmic side" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future.
  • As a personal favorite of James Gunn, Adam was intended to play a much more substantial role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, alongside his kin. However, Gunn chose to leave him out of the films until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, because he felt the prior movie had already been "overstuffed" and that it would be wise to refrain from using him until the sequel.
  • David Corenswet auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock. Director James Gunn later cast him as Superman for his 2025 film of the same name.
