Ai (あい) is the main protagonist in the Japanese exclusive film, Animal Crossing: The Movie (Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori).
She is a human girl who has moved into Animal Village to start her new life and has made friends with Margie and Rosie and several more locals there.
Personality[]
Ai is a sweet and kind-hearted young girl. She is determined, searching for her "cherry pie" throughout the movie. Her best friends are Margie, Rosie, and Yū. She appears to be close with her mother as well, writing letters to her about important events that have happened daily and is dedicated to her work in delivering packages to villagers for Tom Nook. She is a little cautious at times, and she is also afraid of spiders, as shown in one scene where a spider lands on her face, and she freaks out and she also dislikes cockroaches. She is also supportive of Margie and her dream to become a fashion designer and didn't think that she would have to move to pursue her career. She will become sad and disorientated when she learns that Margie moved away without a chance to say good-bye to her.
Appearance[]
Ai has ruby red hair that are tied into pigtails with triangular bangs on her forehead and mauve eyes with small eyelashes. She primarily wears a Blossom Dress, blue and white striped stockings, and red shoes with hearts on them, though they change depending on the season. Some trait details are pretty different from her game counterpart of the female player character, such as having a nose that anime characters often have, and her eyes are proportioned to fit the anime theme.
Biography[]
Ai first moves into Animal Village at the beginning of spring. Upon arrival, she enters the Town Hall and is instructed by Pelly to meet with Tom Nook at Nook's Cranny to receive her house key and upon meeting him, he gives her a job of making deliveries to the residents. As she carries the packages on the bike, she meets several residents, including Rosie, Whitney, Alfonso, and Yū. She arrives at the Able Sisters to make her last delivery, where she meets Margie. On her way home, a spider lands on Ai and Yū tries to catch it, but misses and they become acquaintances, though she turns down a cockroach in terror.
After doing more deliveries, Ai is tasked with bringing a package to Apollo, who is found to not be at home, but Yū and Alfonso's antics have resulted in her falling into Apollo's flowerbed full of rare blue roses, which Mr. Resetti then appears and scolds her, but after learning what happened, he tells her to head to The Roost where Apollo is. Ai enters the Museum where she freaks out over the dinosaur fossils, while meeting Blathers who gives long explanations about some of the dinosaurs while his sister Celeste leads her to The Roost. Ai meets Cesar and Cyrano, and shortly afterward, Apollo arrives and reveals that he is miffed about his flowerbed being damaged to which Ai confessed. She makes her delivery and heads home when she encounters Margie and became best friends with her. During the trip to the beach, with Rosie and Margie, the latter is drawing various designs and adds that she aspires to become a fashion designer one day and drawing whatever idea comes to her head is ideal in making her inspirations effective, and compares it to being able to eat a cherry pie. Later that night, Ai finds a note in a bottle on the beach with a map that reads "Above the pine forest, on the night of the Winter Festival, a miracle will occur." She then sees what she believes to be a UFO.
The following night during the summer season, Ai receives another note in a bottle, which then instructs her to plant pine trees across Animal Village for a miracle to take place during the Winter Festival. The next day, Ai, Rosie, and Margie meet up with Yū and Alfonso, who are out hunting for fossils. Rosie instructs them to head to the cave close by where fossils can be found. Despite going through the rough currents of the cave, they stumble upon a Seismosaurus fossil which is the only one not found in the museum. However, the cave collapsed, but the group managed to escape safely. Sometime later as the Fireworks Festival is happening, Margie has realized her dream and Ai wishes to have a dream of her own and when K.K. Slider is about to give a performance, Margie requests for K.K. Bossa which plays at night. When she returns home, she finds two more notes in bottles, which reveal that an alien has been writing them, hoping to arrive on her planet to meet her.
As autumn arrives, Rosie informs Ai that Margie moved from Animal Village to become a designer. Disorientated that Margie did not inform of her departure, Ai runs away and when arriving at the museum, she falls into a pitfall set up by Yū and Alfonso, but she gets out and is too depressed to react at all. She arrives at The Roost where Brewster gives her coffee while bringing up the topic about Margie and K.K. Bossa. Ai finally breaks down in despair as Whitney, who was aware of Margie's move, consoles her and tells her to believe in herself; Ai and Margie's bond shall never fade. Whitney then compares how woman's bond and a relationship differs, and no matter what she does, it will never return to what she loved and cared about. That night, Ai receives a letter from Margie, who explains why she never told her about the move, that she would be too emotionally overwhelmed if she said anything. Attached to the letter is a drawing of Ai and a note telling her to "eat her own cherry pie," or to follow her dreams.
During the winter, Mayor Tortimer announces the beginning of the Winter Festival where the resident with the best holiday decorations is crowned the winner. Ai checks over the cedar trees she had planted earlier in the year to find them fully grown, and they turn out to form the shape of a star. She pays a visit to Celeste's observatory to look at constellations, but she happens to find a UFO crash land into the clearing of the forest. The residents rush to the crash site where they are greeted by Gulliver, who claims to be an alien, emerges and explains that five of his ship parts have gone missing and tasks everyone to find them all so he would be able to return home. The residents of the village then split up to find the parts; Champ goes to the woods, Apollo, Cyrano, and Cesar go to the mountains, Whitney searches near the ocean, and Ai, Rosie, Alfonso, and Yū head to the cave where they found the Seismosaurus fossil, but the entrance was blocked since its collapse during summer and tried to move it, but was too heavy for them, only for Margie, who is stronger than they are, to help pull it away. The group enters the cave and finds the spaceship part on top of the Seismosaurus. Yū, despite the struggle and almost falling a few times, climbs up the fossil and retrieves the part and returns to the crash site. Once they return to Gulliver with the parts, several UFOs appear, the one Ai had began to morph into an alien life-form, who appears to thank Ai before it joins the other UFOS, and it draws Ai's face as a constellation, and Toritimer announces Ai as the winner of the Winter Festival for the alien's constellation, and for the first time, Ai feels like a true resident of Animal Village. She asks Apollo if he is still mad at her for falling in his flower bed, but he states that he wasn't mad at her to begin with.
In a post-credits scene, set one year after Ai moved into Animal Village, Ai narrates a letter written to her mother while running toward the museum to meet Celeste. The camera then pans down to show lilies of the valley growing.
