Heroine Overview

Ai Hoshino is the titular overarching protagonist of the 2020 manga series Oshi no Ko and its 2023 anime adaptation.

She is the former leader of the idol group B-Komachi after having gotten help from Masaya Kaburagi to join the company of the Lalalai Theatrical Company and become an idol for B-Komachi. She is also the mother of Aquamarine and Ruby Hoshino, as well as the ex-girlfriend of Hikaru Kamiki.

She was voiced by Rie Takahashi in Japanese who also voiced Megumin in KonoSuba, Hu Tao in Genshin Impact, Emilia in Re:Zero, Peni Parker in the Japanese dubs of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Cassie Lang in the Japanese dub of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, and Cassie Sandsmark in the Japanese dub of Young Justice. She has been voiced by Donna Bella Litton in English.

Appearance[]

Ai was a beautiful young girl with dark-purple and pink-colored eyes with white shiny six-star pupils. She has indigo and purplish long hair arriving at her waist and has bangs that have pink streaks in them. She sometimes tied her hair into two braids whenever she had free time. While performing, she had a side ponytail on her left side with a bunny hairpin with two golden stars and a pink ribbon. She wears a hot-pink ruffled attire with three blue aqua stars that are on her ruffled collar that surrounds her neck and has a red heart with wings sewn on her yellow turtle-neck underneath. She also wears a black belt around her waist and a ruffled short pink skirt with yellow frills along with a pair of hot-pink over-the-knee boots. She also wore hot-pink ruffled wrist length gloves with a thin purple elastic tying them down.

Personality[]

In the past, she used to be someone with no competence and didn't have any potential, unlike her current self, due to her suffering from a harsh childhood. Because of her abusive mother, she had a hard time remembering of having faith on herself. She would, later on, be recruited by Ichigo Saitou to create a group of icons with her. Before being under the circumstances of not believing in herself, Saitou managed to reassure her that lying is not an issue and in fact even a helpful characteristic. Throughout her thoughts, she wanted to find something for her desires on loves with telling herself that forms of love can be lying. Furthermore, she has the wish of waiting to display to her audience that her loves and lies are the same.

She was not afraid of facing any result that she would receive because of her actions alongside with her method of showing love to everyone around her. Ai lived with her abusive and violent mother, being the only parent that raised her since her birth. Her mother would later on be arrested for theft and robbery when she was still at a very young age. Ai was afterward taken to an orphanage due to her mother's absence. Upon being released from jail, her mother however did not have the intention to pick her up from the orphanage.

At age twelve, Ai met Ichigo Saitou being the president of Strawberry Productions who hired her to be an idol. However she was lacking the confidence of faith in herself of not being the right job for her due to having a hard understanding what is love or being loved. Which Ichigo was able to afterward reassure her and that lying is great enough to be a trait which gave her the desire of showing her fans the meaning of love along with her lies.

Ai would get pregnant at the age of 16 with having to give to twins, which she decides to keep it as a secret from public after being told by the president of her company that the world would not be ready for 16 year old to give birth. In addition she also had the desire of wanting to feel what it feel like to start a family.

  • The series' title Oshi no Ko translates into "My Favorite Idol" or "Their Idol's Children."
  • In the "Top Ranking of Figures Japanese Kids Most Admire in 2023" survey, Ai is one of the two anime characters present, ranked as 3rd on the list along with Frieren, the titular protagonist of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, ranked 10th on the list.[1]
