Akane Awakusu (粟楠茜, Awakusu Akane) is a supporting protagonist in the light novel and anime series Durarara!!. She is a 10-year-old little girl and a member of the Awakusu family, which unbeknownst to her until recently, is a Yakuza family. She is the daughter of Mikiya Awakasu, and the granddaughter of Dougen Awakasu. After finding out the true nature of her family's business, she ran away from home and unknowingly thrust herself into Izaya's clutches.
She is voiced by Misaki Kuno in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Brianna Knickerbocker in the English version of the anime.
Appearance[]
Akane is of average height for her age and gender, with dark-red eyes and black hair that she keeps cut in a style similar to Anri's. She is usually seen wearing her school uniform, a typical sailor fuku that consists of a black shirt with a red ribbon and a red skirt, as well as thigh-length tights and red shoes.
Personality[]
Personality-wise, Akane is a very kind-hearted little girl. She has always sought out the best solution to any problem or situation that would satisfy both sides. Although she has had a very privileged upbringing, she was never spoiled and and she dreamed of being a painter to support her family's "Art Gallery". However, she is also quite shy and not good with strangers, though she will open up to someone if they're nice to her in return.
Due to her carefree life, as well as her young age, Akane wasn't aware of what it was like to be "unfree". She believed that everyone in her class were just as happy as she was. The only incident in her life that occurred was when one of her classmates was being bullied. She was quick to tell the others to stop picking on her despite the possibility that she would be bullied as well. To her surprise, she wasn't. The bullying stopped and everyone else resumed their normal lives.
Eventually, Akane learned the truth; the reason she didn't end up being bullied was because her family is actually an infamous crime syndicate, and the other girls didn't bully her with fear that they would anger her family. Devastated by this revelation, Akane became convinced that her entire life (her friends, her dream to become a painter etc.) was just one big lie. This ultimately convinced her to run away from home, which resulted in her meeting and getting deceived by Izaya.
