Aki Hayakawa is the deuteragonist of Chainsaw Man Part 1: Public Safety Saga.
He is a Public Safety Devil Hunter under Makima's squad. Assigned to handle Denji and Power, Aki is revealed to be contracted to several Devils such as the Curse Devil and the Future Devil. He would later become Denji and Power's best friend as the series progressed.
He is voiced by Shogo Sakata and Ayumu Murase as a child in Japanese and Reagan Murdock and Bryson Baugus as a child in English.
Appearance[]
Aki is a tall young man with black hair and blue eyes. He wears his hair as topknot, alongside wearing his Devil Hunter uniform with suit and tie as well as a sword on his back.
Personality[]
Aki is a stoic, mature and no-nonsense Devil Hunter who takes his job very, very seriously. He was absolutely livid when Denji revealed his superficial reasons for being a devil hunter and consequently beat him to a pulp and insulted him. He also showcases a intense hatred for Devils die to the Gun Devil murdering his entire family. This hatred is so strong he vowed to not only kill Devils by any means but make them suffer in agony whenever he gets the chance. He will however use Devils as tools whenever needed, not only did he make contracts with several different Devils but he only put up with Denji and Power because they were useful and threatened to kill them if they got out of line and spitefully pointed out that they had no human rights. He also very strict and intolerant towards immaturity having showed annoyance at Denji and Power's disrespectful nature and incompetence and even disgusting habits.
However despite Aki's rough exterior deep down he is a very emotional, sensitive and caring individual whom is dedicated to protecting those he cares about no matter the cost. He visits the graves of his fallen comrades and family and can be seen breaking down in tears after learning of Himeno's death. He also grew to be more emotionally open to people having grew to care for Denji and Power like siblings and did everything in his power to ensure that they lived as he blamed himself for his brother's death, vowing to ensure history didn't repeat itself with his new family. He also even grew to care for the Angel Devil as well saving him from dying at the hands of the Typhoon Devil even giving Public Safety a letter of recommendation so he would not be killed.
History[]
Background[]
Aki was born somewhere in Hokkaido, Japan and grew up with his parents and his younger brother Taiyo. One day Aki demanded his parents play catch with him but they were to busy tending to his little brother whom was sick, much to his annoyance. However, Taiyo decides to play with his brother regardless and they go outside. However, Aki notices that Taiyo is not wearing his gloves and demands he go back in the house and get some so his hands don't get cold. However this turns out to be a fatal mistake because as soon as Taiyo goes back to the house it is obliterated by the Gun Devil killing Aki's entire family. Since that day, Aki vowed revenge upon the Gun Devil and grew up to join public safety to do so. He was assigned as buddy to work with a woman named Himeno whom convinced him to start smoking, they would also develop mutual feelings for each other but Aki kept things professional between the two.
Introduction arc[]
Hayakawa is first seen when Makima assigns him to partner up with a rookie named Denji. Denji throws a tantrum because he isnt going to be able to work with Makima forcing Aki to drag him away. However not even a hour later, Aki soon grows annoyed with Denji due to his lax, immature nature and ridiculous reasons for being a devil hunter. Eventually he drags Denji into an alleyway and beats him to a pulp, telling him that if his reasoning for being a devil is simply to get to Makima then he should not be one at all and tells him to just quit while he is ahead. However, Denji cheap shots him in the testicles so many times he collapses on the ground from his injuries. Once they return to Makima, Denji tries to lie saying he got attacked by testicle devil but Aki denies this resulting in the two arguing. Makima however shows no care for their hostility for one another explaining that Denji has the special abilty to transform into a devil which can be useful to them. Aki is then reluctantly forced to not only partner with Denji but allow him to live in his apartment. The next day Aki and Denji are called to an incident where a Fiend is taking up residence in a local house. Aki explains that Fiends are Devils that have taken over the corpses of humans. As soon as they encounter the Fiend, Aki is disappointed and angered to see Denji kill it quick and painlessly. He then threatens Denji and expresses his hatred for Devil and insists that he wants them to suffer as much as possible.
Bat Devil arc[]
The next day Aki and Denji are introduced to the rambunctious Fiend known as Power who is to be a new member of their special division. Eventually Denji and Power end up going on a quest to rescue the latter's pet cat Meowy. However their mission backfires and Denji is injured at the hands of the Leech Devil. Aki arrives just in time and saves him by summoning the Fox Devil. When asked, Aki explains to him about contracts with the Devils and informs him that he is contracted to the Fox Devil and had him eat his skin to confirm the contract. Despite this, Aki informs he still despises Devils and for him, it's just means to an end.
Eternity Devil arc[]
Few days later, Aki is seen with Himeno in an assignment related to the Gun Devil, by removing the piece of Gun flesh from a vanquished Devil. Himeno questions the convenience of the Gun flesh but Aki dismisses it due to being closer to the Gun Devil. Soon after, Makima assigns them as well as Denji, Power, Kobeni and Arai to investigate a hotel where multiple Devil Hunters are being found dead. After Power attacks and defeats a Devil in the hotel, the Devil Hunters find themselves looping on the 8th floor, realizing that the Eternity Devil has trapped them. Aki, following Denji's advice decides to sleep for the day while deciding how to defeat the Devil later on.
After the paranoid Devil Hunters attempt to sacrifice Denji to the Eternity Devil while it promised to let them go with a contract, Himeno attempts to kill him, but Aki stops her. Aki recognized Denji's tenacious spirit and notes he would be very helpful in the upcoming battle against the Gun Devil, after which the Devil Hunters stop trying to kill Denji. As an attempt to prove him right, Denji jumps into the reach of the Eternity Devil, but soon overpowers the Devil and begins torturing it, after 8 hours, the Eternity Devil gives up its heart so that Denji can free it from its misery.
After this incident, the Public Safety Hunters escape the trap as Aki gives the report to Makima. He then joins the celebrations with the rest of the Public Safety where Aki introduces them to Denji and Power. During the party Aki inquires Makima about an interesting question. He claims Devil activity has been increasing lately, quite suspiciously too even pointing out how the Eternity Devil specifically targeted Denji. Aki then questions Makima about what’s so special about Denji but Makima only agrees to answer if Aki manages to out drink her. Aki however loses the drinking contest and gets no answers.
Katana Man arc[]
The day following the party Aki, Power, Himeno and Denji go to a local restaurant for lunch. However they are soon attacked by the Yakuza who were contracted by the Gun Devil to retrieve Denji’s heart. The leader of the attack pulls out a gun and shoots Denji, Aki and Himeno. Although Aki tries to summon the Fox Devil to devour the man he transforms into Samurai Sword and dispatches of the Fox, revealing he is a hybrid like Denji. Aki then realizes he has no choice but to use his sword imbued with the power of the Curse Devil. Aki manages to strike Samurai Sword three times with the sword causing the Curse Devil to instantly kill him. However due to his nature as a hybrid he is revived by his partner Akane Sawatari. Samurai Sowrd then attacks Aki and slices his chest although he barely surives as his uniform is reinforced. Himeno then uses her Ghost Devil to defeat the Snake Devil but in doing so she sacrifices her own life.
Aki is then wakes up in the hospital to Denji and Power by side sliver arguing over who gets to eat his apples. Power and Denji then leave as they were summoned by Makima but they leave him with a single apple to eat. Aki is then informed by the Curse Devil that in exchange for using it power his life span has been shortened significantly and how he only has two years left to live. Aki then picks up a cigarette to smoke but this only causes him to remember Himeno and her death. Aki then breaks down in tears at the loss of his partner. Suddenly Tendo and Kurose enter his hospital room and inform him that the Fox Devil has likely cut ties with him following what happened and he needs to find a new Devil to contract with.
Aki later goes to the Future Devil, who was captured by the Public Safety. After seeing Aki's future, the Devil happily made a contract with him with only the price of staying in his left eye.
After sealing the contract with the Future Devil, Aki was ordered by Makima to take the Fiends as well as both Denji and Power to attack Samurai Sword's hideout.
Powers and Abilities[]
Aki is contracted to multiple devils which loan him their abilities in exchange of something offered by him. These include:
- Fox Devil Contract: Aki has contracted with the Fox Devil, who dealt with him to appear whenever he says "Kon", after which the Fox Devil's head will devour whichever Devil he has been targeting. He loses this ability after his fight with Samurai Sword, after the Fox Devil detested eating the Samurai Sword.
- Curse Devil Contract: Aki has contracted with the Curse Devil, which gave him a sword shaped like a nail. If Aki uses the sword on any enemy 3 times and says "fire" every time, the sword will deal a massive damage to the said enemy, mostly becoming lethal, and also reducing Aki's lifespan with every use. Hybrids seem to be immune to the Curse Devil's effects.
- Future Devil Contract: After losing the contract with the Fox Devil, Aki made another contract with the Future Devil, who lent him his powers with the request of staying in his eye. With his abilities, Aki can predict his enemies' attacks, skills and movesets.
Trivia[]
- Aki's first name comes from the weapon "AK-47", foreshadowing his transformation into the Gun Fiend. The term "AKI" is often used in Japanese as a nickname for the weapon itself.
- Many devil hunters have made contract with the Fox Devil just like Aki, except that Aki is the only one so far that can use the Fox Devil's head while others can only use her paw to attack and that is because Fox Devil found Aki to be attractive.
- In a fan-made brazilian scanlation of the series, Aki is often nicknamed by other characters as "Cebolinha" in reference to the character Jimmy Five from the brazilian comic series, Monica's Gang. Due to the scan's popularity, "Cebolinha" became a popular nickname for the character in the brazilian part of the fandom.
