He was voiced by Kenji Akabane in Japanese and David Cui Cui in English.

Appearance[]

Biography[]

The Outsider[]

Akira had a hard life growing up. When he was just a child and his sister a baby, his father was murdered by a member of the Crusaders, which he witnessed. Following that incident, the two of them grew up in the town orphanage where Akira helped look after the kids there along with Kaori whenever he was there. He also used his psychic powers to read the minds of others. While at the park, he has a run in with some Crusader bikers, reading their minds to find them wanting to capture and sell him off.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Akira battles the Crusaders alongside his old friend Kenichi Matsui, known to others as Lawless and referred to as Matsu by Akira. After beating the criminals back, Akira returns to the orphanage where he gets scolded by Taeko for getting into trouble.

He checks on Kaori and the other kids while also pressuring Watanabe into helping him get a hold of Taeko's pocket stash to a multitude of failed results (eventually even getting socked by Taeko) before finally getting a hold of it (that is, if the player is smart enough). While checking on Kaori, he finds her turtle Tarokichi to be dying. With this, he goes to Doc Tobei for help. The doctor, seeing the opportunity to test liquefaction, liquifies Tarokichi and places his essence into a robot, turning him into Taroimo. Grateful for saving his life, the now robot turtle began to follow Akira.

Later, he attempts to utilize a giant robot known as Steel Titan, but is unable to power it up. When they go back to the orphanage, Akira and Taroimo chase after the crusaders after they kidnap Kazu with Matsu joining him. After saving Kazu, the trio find out that the Crusaders are working for a group of Conspirators seeking to revive some sort of god. With this, Matsu tells Akira to go back to the orphanage. However, Akira is able to find out where Matsu went by reading his mind and follows him to the Tsukuba Research Facility.

There the three fight through the building, where after a horrifying sight of stored, sentient goop with thoughts, they soon find the Conspirators: General Yamazaki, Doctor Livingstill, Priest Unryu and their terrible plot: liquifying people to use them as a 'Lake of Unity' to revive the dark god Odeo. The Conspirators summon a robot against them. Upon destroying the robot, its last words get Akira to realize it to be Watanabe's father. Angered by this revelation, he can only yell that the Conspirators would pay for their crimes before escaping with Matsu and Taroimo.

Later, they hold a meeting at the orphanage with Tobei, who explains the situation and determines Steel Titan to be necessary to put a stop to it. However, since Akira's psychic powers aren't strong enough to operate Steel Titan, Kaori volunteers to be liquified and used to power the robot. Akira refuses her request and Matsu tries to control the robot on his own, but fails.

After finding Matsu at a bar, drinking his sorrows away later on, Akira notices the Crusaders setting the orphanage on fire and heads over to save everybody. He and Taroimo end up trapped when he finds Kaori, but he soon finds out that Matsu has entered the robot and has managed to get it operating. There, Matsu uses Steel Titan to rescue them and fend off the Crusaders before eventually collapsing due to mental overload from the overdose of Matango in order to operate it.

Everybody becomes saddened as Matsu begins to pass. During this moment, Akira reads Matsu's mind, which the latter confesses to being the Crusader that killed his father and took Akira in out of guilt, wishing to atone, apologizing to Akira and accepting the possibility that the boy would hate him for this reveal. However, this only further motivates Akira to finish what his friend started as he orders everybody out of Steel Titan so he can take control. His psychic power bursts to the point that Steel Titan becomes operable again.

With this, he strikes down Yamazaki's army and faces the now resurrected Odeo, whom the Conspirators aid. Upon destroying the false god, the trapped souls within the Lake of Unity get riled up and drown the Conspirators and almost do the same to the Steel Titan. It is unknown how Akira escapes (though it is assumed he teleported out), but he lived on to continue Matsu's legacy, running his Taiyaki stand.

The Dominion of Hate[]

While serving Taiyaki, Akira gets transported by Odio to the Middle Ages along with six others. His starting area is the now-ruined village of Fugalia. If someone else is chosen as leader, he is found here sleeping and will read their mind upon being woken. The player can choose to fight him or not. Regardless, he goes along with the other heroes to stop Odio.

After a Teleport warps the team into the Trial of Heart,

If Akira is the lead character, he will call Oersted out for allowing himself to go down a dark path (slapping and grabbing the formerly-mad knight with one hand in Remake).

With the Lord of Dark gone and the heroes safely home, Akira reunites with his family of choice in the orphanage, hoping this peaceful, if chaotic life will continue.

Bad Endings[]

After Purity of Odio's defeat, if the player chooses to execute Oersted, Akira smites the former without a doubt before turning his back on the "dumbass". However, since Oersted was killed too early, the Lord of Dark's hatred is free to continue the cycle, and Akira along with the other six heroes are presumably trapped in Lucrece.

If Oersted is chosen as protagonist for the Dominion of Hate, his overwrites of history lead to a grisly fate for Akira as Steel Titan is crushed by the Great Inko.

Optionally, if the player is losing the fight they can choose the Armageddon option, leading Akira (and the others)' efforts to be all for naught as Odio reduces the universe to nothing.

Quotes[]

Know what your problem is? You blamed everyone else. Said it was them or gods or fate that made you what you are. But it was YOU! Just you! Yeah, people can suck. We can be selfish—look out only for ourselves. But if you focus only on the bad—judge them at their worst, well... You've already made up your mind, haven't you? Everything else is just an excuse!
~ Akira berating Oersted for turning to evil.
