Alois "Al" Bernholt (Japanese: アル, Aru) is a major character of the video game, Xenoblade Chronicles X. He is a close friend of Elma and the hero that piloted the Ares Prime against Void and the Ghosts, back when they originally attacked humanity on Earth. He was believed to have died when he and the Ares mysteriously disappeared but later turned out to be alive when he appeared on Mira.

He is voiced by Shuhei Sakaguchi in the Japanese version of the game and by Ben Balmaceda in its English dub.

Personality

Al is a rather brash and impulsive individual, with Elma sometimes describing him to be a hotshot. He is quite outgoing and has shown to be a sociable person that gets along well with others, mainly with Doug and Lao, who hung out with him at bars back on Earth. His achievements in piloting the Ares Prime and using it to fight off against the Ganglion and Ghosts has led many to see him as a hero worthy of praise. Despite this, Al himself is not exactly fond of the fame he receives and prefers to be treated as a regular citizen.

While he may come off rather snarky at times, he does deeply care for his friends and humanity as a whole, being overjoyed in seeing them thrive on Mira and making new allies among other xeno lifeforms. Likewise, he is able to quickly establish a close bond with Rook, seeing them as someone worthy of piloting the Ares Prime.

He has expressed that enjoys eating pizza a lot, specifically pepperoni pizza, and is very determined to have some once it's on his mind.

Trivia

• Al is the only human in the game that has his real body instead of a mimeosome. Because of this, he is initially the only person that can pilot the Ares Prime.
• Al originally appeared in the original version of the game unnamed, though the Xenoblade X: The Secret File artbook referred to him as the Black Knight. It is unclear if he was actually intended to be the Black Knight or a separate character entirely.
  • In addition, his personal Skell was intended to be the early concept of the Hraesvelg, before it was ultimately repurposed for Liesel.
• His Skell, the Ares Prime, uses cores that are similar to the ones seen on the Ouroboros in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. This is because both the Ares Prime and the Ouroboros were created and powered up by the Conduit.
