~ Alex’s last word.

Alex Weiss (born 1989, die 2013) is a supporting character in the video game Tomb Raider (2013). He is the Endurance electrical engineer and technician, also a hacker.

He was played by Andy Hoff.

History[]

Alex grew up with his sister Kaz and also got along well with his father, as they had bought a gold watch as "the best dad in the world". After his father's death, Alex inherited the watch.

At just nine years old, Alex was inspired by technology and learned many things like hacking. He raised him to work in legally questionable, if only what he considered a "victimless crime," although his definition of this was very broad. Alex met Conrad Roth after Alex hacked some government databases. Roth looked hesitant, even though Jonah said he could be of use to them. Alex even offered to work for free, though Roth dismissed the notion that if the rest of the crew was paid, Alex would be paid, allowing him to stay on board. Alex was initially interested in the legend of the Yamatai, though he viewed it more as a conspiracy than academic research, as Lara saw it.

Before the expedition begins, Roth has Alex forge permits for their trip. During the trip, Alex got along quite well with Lara. Alex fell overboard at one point while he was trying to install a device that would grant Wi-Fi access to the crew. At one point he was in the engine room with Reyes, slowing down as he tried to diagnose a problem, claiming it was mechanical and not electrical, even though he was wrong, and Reyes scolded him. He also worked as a cameraman for Sam.

After the Endurance begins to sink, Alex manages to make it to shore, along with Jonah, Reyes, Grim, Whitman and one other crew member, who appears to be dead or dying, and Alex tries to give him CPR, which ends up be unsuccessful, as the crewman is never seen again. The group receives a signal from Roth to come to him inland, they then find Lara who is stuck in a bear trap and Reyes frees her. Lara informs them that Sam has been kidnapped by Mathias and they all decide to separate. Alex offers to go with Lara, but Whitman says he goes and Alex goes with the rest of the group. Alex later calls Lara after the plane crash to reassure her that there will be another way off the island. Lara asked about Sam, and Alex told her they traced her to an old Japanese mansion, and she jokingly said Sam was probably just sightseeing. Then he is captured with the rest of the group, though Grim manages to escape, and locked up in a suspended cage in the geothermal caves. Lara then comes to save them and they get their ammo back as the place is on fire and they save Sam but then they are cornered by the Solariis and Lara and Roth are in a helicopter in flight which ends up crashing and when they reach them they find Roth deceased and Lara in full crisis. Together they build a funeral pyre for Roth, at Jonah's suggestion that they send him forth as a warrior. Reyes angrily suggests they set up a boat on the beach and leaves, Lara telling them whatever they do the island won't let them leave. Alex tries to reassure her, that they just need to "regroup, come up with a plan". Lara tells them there is a force that has something holding them there. Reyes doesn't believe a word from Lara, but Alex stands up for her and Lara goes.

Alex calls Lara in the morning, they managed to get to the beach, and the boat is in bad condition and they have nothing to repair it. Lara says he can do it and she's on her way. Alex volunteers to get Reyes' tools from the resistance, in order to help. Alex attempts to sneak back aboard the Endurance, which has been stripped by the Solarii for salvage, to retrieve Reyes' repair tools for the PT Boat. In the process, he is discovered by the Solarii and falls into the ocean. He manages to get on the ship and gets to the engine room. He retrieves Reyes' tools, but a pipe falls on him, injuring his leg and pinning him to the ground.

Lara in the engine room finds Alex trapped, she is happy with him that she found her tools and Alex jokes that he finally managed to impress her. Lara tries to free him, even though she injures him further, Alex tries to lighten the mood, making her laugh nervously, at which moment the Solariis attack. Alex manages to kill some of them by shooting an exploding gas line and Alex yells for Lara to run, knowing she won't let him die even though she has accepted her fate. Lara doesn't know what to say and before taking the tools and slipping away she gives Alex a hug and a kiss on the cheek as a last goodbye. Lara closes and seals the hatch with tools while Alex inside with Solarii shoots a very dangerous gas line that generates a huge explosion and Alex dies with all the Solarii with him.

Lara really depressed after this; she decides she won't quit it will be that no other member of the Endurance dies.

Personality[]

Alex is considered a "genius", but also lazy because he would rather do nothing at all. Like Sam, he is somewhat carefree. He always seems to be quite nice, he gets along well with the other members of the Endurance, apart from Reyes who irritates him with his arrogance. Roth was initially reluctant to let him come on board because he had done something illegal, but then it was decided to let him come on board, it could be useful, and rejected Alex's idea of working for free, saying he would be paid if the others did.

He is also very talkative and jokes sarcastically. This has led him to incur the wrath of Reyes, and even occasionally earned him an irritated look from Lara. Lara suggested that they use his lines when they are really scared and in crisis.

It seemed that Alex had a crush on Lara, written in a journal entry, though it is never shown. He seems to get along very well with Lara, even if it annoys her at times, as he calls him both "Strange", "Sweet" and "Brilliant". He managed to entertain her, even in really critical moments, where she was desperate. Alex went part way to get tools to impress Lara and get noticed. After being trapped on the Endurance, Alex forces Lara to leave without him, unwilling to let her die because of her. Lara leaves, kissing him goodbye on her cheek, and Alex sacrifices himself to save her. Lara therefore promises them that she will not let any other friend die, after Alex's sacrifice. Pursued by her survivor's guilt, Lara begins to hallucinate and dream about him.

Trivia[]

  • Aside from Lara, Alex is the only character to show any significant signs of injury or wear and tear, on his character model.
    • When he is trapped on the Endurance, where he is shown to have received a cut on his arm wrapped in a bandage, his shirt is ripped in several places, and he is much dirtier and bloodier than when he was last seen.
  • It is never explained how Lara actually got the watch, or how Alex was able to give her information about his sister. It is unknown if it was actually Alex's ghost or not.
