Alf Roberts is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the British soap opera Coronation Street, serving as one of the show's most important characters ever since debuting in the series from the early sixties and lasting until New Year's Day 1999. He was portrayed by the late Bryan Mosley.

Biography[]

Alf Roberts first came to Weatherfield in early 1961 and became one of the longest-standing residents for many decades.

While settling himself on the street, Alf was devastated when his brother Malcolm died in an incident between them; Alf had swerved his car to avoid hitting a child while his brother Malcolm was in the car's passenger seat, which indirectly resulted in Malcolm's death and leaving the latter's wife Phyllis to become a widower. Alf felt extremely guilty for what happened and supported Phyllis over her loss. He soon proposed to her and she accepted before they got married, but it ultimately proved to be a loveless marriage from the start and never grew into anything more. Despite this Alf's sense of morality and principles stopped him from ever being an unfaithful husband.

In march 1967, Alf crossed paths with local resident Ken Barlow. This happened when Alf, who was best friends with Ken's father Frank, voted to block a student meeting protesting Vietnam War, This was something that Ken had opposed and he was later taken into police custody for retaliating against Alf for what happened.

Soon enough Alf became a more permeant fixture on the street in 1971 when he became member of the committee for the Community Centre. When Phyllis died Alf felt guilty as he felt romantic love for his friend Maggie Clegg. But she was outraged by Alf's attitude as she felt they had done nothing wrong.

Alf ran for mayor against his friend Len Fairclough and won. Len took the defeat well and graciously agreed to be Alf's deputy Mayor.

Alf faced problems when Norman Lynch tried to ruin his reputation by threatening to ruin his reputation but Bet Lynch sorted Norman out for Alf by threatening to report Norman to the police for blackmail.

Alf became the owner of the Corner Shop through his marriage to Rene Bradshaw who he loved deeply. At the weeding Alf punched Rene's stepfather Joe Hibbert after he congratulated Alf for marrying her for her money. When Rene died in a car crash Alf felt responsible which he confided in Ken about. After Len's death Alf made every effort to look out for his wife Rita and they became very close.

Alf married Audrey Potter with Alf's good friend Mike Baldwin acting as the best man at the wedding even though the two had recently fell out when Mike advised Hilda Ogden on the sale of her house to Alf. After Ken was forced to drop out of the council election against Alf his wife Deirdre ran against him in Alf's place and won.

A few years later when there was a re-election Alf was encouraged by his campaign manager Alec Gilroy to fight dirty which he did by attacking Deirdre's status as a twicely divorced woman. Phi; Jennings attempted to smear Alf's reputation so Deirdre would win but this led to Alf's victory.

In 1998 Alf died of a hart attack to the devastation of his family, friends and community at large.
