Alfie Moon is a fictional character and central protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

He debuted on 21st November 2005 and became one of the show's leading protagonists up until his first departure on 25th December 2005, before reprising the role in 2010-2016 and 2022-2024 onwards as well as making a supporting appearence in 2018-2019 itself. He also appeared as one of the two titular protagonists of th22 2017 six-part spin-off series Kat & Alfie: Redwater.

The character is portrayed by Shane Richie.

Biography[]

Alfie Moon first came to Albert Square, the market town of fictional East London borough Walford, in November 2002 as somebody who had just been ejected at the train station for fare evasion. He is then mistaken as the new manager of The Queen Victoria public house by owner Peggy Mitchell, but goes along with the ruse until his true identity is disclosed - though he manages to still get the job after winning over many residents with his charisma and respectful nature.

In 2003, he gets acquainted with neighbour Kat Slater and the two harbour romantic feelings for each other. Their relationship gets threatened, however, when Kat is seduced by mobsman Andy Hunter and she gets engaged to him despite Andy's reservations. But then Alfie manages to stop their wedding and profess his love for Kat in front of everyone; Kat then jilts Andy after choosing Alfie over him, after which Alfie marries Kat on Christmas Day that year.

In 2004, however, the two have financial problems and are forced to turn to Andy for help. Andy then begins extorting money from Alfie and later blackmails Kat into sleeping with him as revenge for being jilted on his wedding day. Andy's actions nearly drive the couple apart, but Alfie and Kat ultimately remain in love with each other despite everything that has happened. By then, Alfie and Andy become archenemies up to the point where they cross paths with each other numerous times. Then in February 2005, after Andy starts a protection racket to assert his authority over everyone, Alfie confronts his nemesis and they have a fight over Kat along with everything else. The next day, Alfie is shocked to learn that Andy is dead after the latter was murdered by his gangland rival Johnny Allen.

During that time, Alfie became involved in other major storylines such as getting beaten up by gangsters working for Andy's crime boss Jack Dalton in order to protect his younger brother Spencer Moon from enduring that fate over debt troubles; supporting Kat over her traumatic past of being sexually abused by her uncle Harry Slater as a teenager; cheating on Kat with her sister Little Mo Slater after comforting the latter over being raped by punter Grahame Foster; being temporarily homeless on Christmas Day 2004 after getting evicted from The Queen Vic by former landlord Den Watts; dealing with his troublesome cousins Jake and Danny over their involvement in Johnny's gangland activities; coping with the death of his grandmother Nana Moon; and reconciling with Kat before the two depart the square on Christmas Day 2005.

In 2010, Alfie returned to the square with Kat. It was then their story arc continued that centered around Alfie discovering that Kat had a one-night stand with his villainous cousin Michael Moon; coping with the apparent cot death of Kat's baby Tommy Moon until it had transpired that Peggy's eldest niece, Ronnie Mitchell, had actually switched him with her own deceased son; breaking up with Kat after discovering that she had been sleeping with his adversary Derek Branning; embarking on a relationship with Ronnie's sister Roxy Mitchell and then marrying her until he ends up reconciling with Kat at the last minute; having a ready-made family life with Kat when she gives birth to his children, twins Bert and Ernie, as well as becoming Tommy's adoptive father up until the couple break up after Alfie sets fire to their house by committing arson in order to get the insurance money; winning the lottery before later finding himself in debt to Peggy's criminal son Phil Mitchell; being diagnosed with a brain tumor; attempting to win back Kat until they split again when she discovers that he slept with her relative Hayley Slater and got the latter pregnant with their daughter Cherry Slater; reuniting with Kat despite being forced to tolerate her relationship and eventual marriage with Phil; forming a romantic companionship with the pub's landlady Linda Carter; and coping with his recent diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Shane Richie (the actor who played Alfie Moon) recieved universial acclaim for his role and performance as Alfie Moon along with contributing to the character's high-profilic storylines, most notably in his love story arc with romantic partner Kat Slater.
- As such, Alfie's relationship with Kat - publicly dubbed "Kalfie" on media - has been hailed as one of the most iconic in EastEnders history.
