Heroine Overview

I give myself very good advice... but I very seldom follow it.
~ Alice
If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn't. And contrariwise, what it is, it wouldn't be, and what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?
~ Alice talking to Dinah.

Alice is the titular main protagonist of Disney's 13th full-length animated feature film Alice in Wonderland and the overarching protagonist of the Disney Junior show Alice's Wonderland Bakery.

She is loosely based on the character with the same name from the Lewis Carroll's books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. The voice and the reference for animators of the character in the movie were done by Kathryn Beaumont, Alice who has also done the voice on the self-titled attraction at Disneyland as well as in other media involving Disney, including the TV series, House of Mouse and the first Kingdom Hearts video game. Kathtyn eventually reprised her role once in Alice's Wonderland Bakery

But her original voice actress, Kathryn Beaumont has retired and Alice is now, from Kingdom Hearts 2.0 Remix onward currently voiced by Hynden Walch who voiced Starfire from Teen Titans and her reboot incarnation in Teen Titans Go! and Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time.

In live action film, a grown-up Alice Kingsleigh was portrayed by Mia Wasikowska in the Tim Burton films, and by Sophie Lowe in the television series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.

Physical Appearance[]

Of course there is, you can find my body.
~ Alice in Disney's Villains' Revenge

Alice is a cute pre-teen girl, who is fair-skinned with thick shoulder-length blonde hair, rosy cheeks, a black hair ribbon tied in a bow, blue eyes, red or dark pink lips, hot pink nails and wears a cerulean blue puffy short-sleeved knee-length dress with a white pinafore apron, white thigh-high lace stockings, white corset, frilly white knee-length pantalettes, matching petticoat and black strapped Mary Jane shoes with brown/grey soles.

Biography[]

She is depicted as a daydreamer first and foremost. Prior to arriving in Wonderland, she sat on the bank of a river listening to her big sister reading lessons. But Alice didn't like the book as it had no pictures, and claimed, "In my world, the books would be nothing but pictures!" This gives some idea of Alice's large imagination. And at first, Wonderland seemed like the perfect place for Alice, as it allowed her to indulge in her imaginings as well as her intense curiosity. However, Alice's quick temper and eagerness to show off her knowledge often proved to be bad qualities in Wonderland and landed her in many precarious situations. She likes daydreaming, flowers, and tea, but she dislikes being tickled, books with no pictures and rudeness.

Alice in Wonderland (1951 Disney film)[]

Alice-in-wonderland-disneyscreencaps

Alice with her kitten, Dinah

Alice first appears in the film as she is busy working on a flower wreath while doing her best to listen to her big sister as she recites Alice's history lesson to her. When Alice's kitten Dinah shakes the wreath off her and onto Alice's sister, needless to say, Alice's sister is not amused and politely, though annoyingly, asks Alice to listen to her history lesson. Alice apologizes, grumbling about why she should listen to a book that has no pictures in it. Her sister counters her grumbling by reassuring her that there are a many a book in the world that do not have pictures in them. However, Alice simply retorts that while that may be true in "your world", in her world, the books would be nothing but pictures, leaving her sister amused, but calling Alice's dreams nonsense before returning to the lesson.

However, Alice is inspired by what she just said, and talks to Dinah about where she dreams of a world of her own, such as how Dinah would not meow in Alice's world, but would reply in English, "Yes, Miss Alice" instead. It is around this time that Alice, unknowingly, dozes off to sleep and begins to dream about Wonderland.

It starts when Dinah alerts her to spotting the White Rabbit. Upon getting shocked herself at seeing him, Alice immediately gives pursuit of him as he frantically says he's late for a very important date, disappearing down his rabbit hole. Despite concerns from Dinah, Alice squeezes herself into the rabbit hole and proceeds down the tunnel, but not paying attention to where she's going as she was talking to Dinah at that moment, Alice doesn't see the slope angle downward, and she falls forward into a bottomless pit. Fearing this is the end for her, she waves goodbye to Dinah before falling out of sight. However, as she tumbles and turns upright, enough air catches under her dress and causes it to blossom open like a parachute, slowing her fall to a gentle float as she takes in the surprise of how she'll survive her fall thanks to this. After being momentarily interrupted talking to herself by her apron coming loose from her dress and smothering her face before she flattens it out again, she is amazed by what she sees as she floats down the rabbit hole with the walls and various objects and knickknacks floating in place. She even takes a book from a nightstand to read to bide her time, but is quickly bored and distracted by other things before landing in a rocking chair and relaxing before she slides out of it, and her dress redeploys into its parachute form. Reaching a bottleneck in the hole, she deflates her dress to slip through, then quickly releases it to blossom out again, before turning upside down as she questions about if she'll end up on the other side of the Earth where people walk upside down. Laughing it off as silly, she soon finds her floating downward halted as she catches on something, spots the White Rabbit running away, and quickly realizing her feet caught on a curtain rod, she gets herself turned upright again and resumes her chase.

She then meets The Doorknob, who suggests she drink from a bottle labeled "Drink Me" to become small enough to enter him, only to find she forgot the key when it appears on the table. Eating a cookie from a chest labeled "Eat Me" to try and return to her normal size, Alice ends up becoming so big that she nearly takes up the whole room. She soon loses control of her emotions and begins crying so hard that her tears end up turning the floor of the room into an ocean of them. When the Doorknob points out there's still some fluid left in the bottle for her to drink, Alice drinks it, shrinking small enough to be carried, in the bottle, through the Doorknob's mouth/keyhole, and into Wonderland proper.

There she meets the Dodo having a caucus race and Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who tell her the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter. Alice later stumbles upon the White Rabbit's home and finally meets face to face with him, but he mistakes her for his maid Mary Ann. He orders her to get his gloves and while inside she eats more snacks which makes her large again. The White Rabbit believes this to be a monster and to regain her natural size she eats a carrot. She begins the continuation of her journey small as a bug and meets rude flowers and a semi-wise Caterpillar during her journey on. She regains her natural size by eating a piece of a mushroom pointed out to her by the Caterpillar. Alice then meets the mischievous Cheshire Cat and is led to the Mad Hatter and March Hare. Alice and the duo become friends until they seem to be even madder than they appear. Alice storms away frustrated and ends up lost in the Tugley Woods, where she finally admits that she wants to go back home to where everything is safe and sane, admitting that a world of her own isn't what she wanted anymore. She meets up with Cheshire Cat again, and he leads her to the tyrannical Queen of Hearts under the surmise she could help Alice get home, who constantly loses her temper blaming Alice for anything that happens to her, when it was the Cheshire Cat causing the pranks to tick off the Queen and framing Alice for them. While playing croquet, Alice gets her tummy tickled by a dimwitted flamingo. The Queen of Hearts gets upset to the point where a kangaroo court is held as a way to get Alice beheaded. Though Alice attempts to stand up to the Queen when she grows giant again, thus giving her some advantage and leverage against the Queen, she soon returns to her normal size, and at the worst possible time as Alice had just insulted the Queen with calling her a "fat, pompous, bad-tempered, old tyrant", which once the Cheshire Cat seals Alice's doom with repeating it to the Queen, she explodes in fury and orders Alice executed, forcing Alice to flee for her life before the Card Soldiers can capture her and carry out her sentence.

Soon enough the pursuit leads to a climactic chase with all the maddened Wonderland residents chasing down Alice until she's cornered at the Doorknob, who reveals that she's fast asleep in reality, leading up to Alice waking up to her sister's voice asking her to recite her history lesson, realizing it was a dream. She then leaves with her big sister and cat, Dinah, heading for home.

Mickey Mousecapade[]

In this Nintendo game, Mickey and Minnie Mouse set off to rescue Alice from Maleficent (or the Queen of Hearts in the Japanese version).

House of Mouse[]

Alice makes numerous appearances in the animated series House of Mouse. Alice is usually seen drinking tea with The Mad Hatter. Alice also appears in Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse.

In the episode, "Big Bad Wolf Daddy", where Donald had invited the Big Bad Wolf to perform at the club, despite what happened the last time he was there, during his performance, Big Bad Wolf Daddy huffs and puffs so hard during one of his trumpet solo interludes that he causes Alice's dress to take on its parachute form again as she's literally blown away by him, right out the club's front doors past a startled Max Goof, alongside the likes of Jiminy Cricket, Pocahontas, Meeko, and the Colors of the Wind.

In "Mickey vs Shelby", just after Mickey welcomes everyone to the club, Alice is seen in the lobby asking Daisy if the White Rabbit passed through recently. Daisy replies no and apologizes, and Alice continues into the club, curious where the White Rabbit went, unaware when he pops up after she's gone to thank Daisy and explains that "she's been following me".

Kingdom Hearts series[]

Alice KHREC

Alice is one of the Princesses of Heart who appeared in Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. The world in which she appears is Wonderland, although whether or not this is her home world is debatable. Alice is the only member of the Princesses of Heart who's not of royal heritage (through marriage or lineage) aside from Kairi.

Kingdom Hearts[]

After falling down a rabbit hole into Wonderland and meeting a host of bizarre characters, Alice follows the White Rabbit to the Queen of Hearts' court where she's put on trial for supposedly assaulting the Queen with the intention of stealing her heart. Attempting to prove Alice's innocence, Sora is challenged to find evidence, and Alice is placed in captivity. While talking with her, Sora discovers that Alice might have accidentally stumbled upon an undiscovered system of world travel due to her arrival in Wonderland from another world. Later on, when Sora brings forth evidence of Alice's innocence, the Queen's anger at his attempts due to the nonsensical rules of Wonderland lead to a scuffle. As the Queen orders her subjects to attack Sora, Donald, and Goofy, Alice's cage is covered and lifted above the court so as to keep her out of Sora's reach. During the fight, Alice becomes abducted by the Heartless and taken to the world of Hollow Bastion, where a group of villains from other worlds, led by the witch Maleficent, are plotting to take over all worlds. Their plan happens to involve Alice who, as a Princess of Heart, has the power to open the Final Keyhole and she's kept in stasis along with the other princesses. Upon discovering her disappearance, Sora and his friends continue venturing to other worlds, keeping an eye out for Alice so that they could return her to her world. Some time later, Ansem interferes with Maleficent's plan, using Alice's heart to create the Keyblade of People's Hearts. However, a selfless act by Sora restores Alice's heart. Upon awakening, she assists the other Princesses in defending Hollow Bastion from the darkness that is threatening to consume it. After Sora sealed the Keyhole, she remains behind in Hollow Bastion to protect the world. When the door to Kingdom Hearts is sealed, she is able to return to her own world. She is presumably exonerated by the Queen of Hearts upon returning to Wonderland now that the Queen knew the Heartless were the real culprits.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories[]

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Alice appears as a fragment of Sora 's memories, a sort of doppelganger to her real self. Thus, the real Alice that Sora met in Kingdom Hearts is not aware of the following details. Alice's role is similar to her first appearance, but this time she is blamed for stealing the Queen of Hearts' memories. She manages to escape when Sora, unable to think of anything else, claims that he is the thief. After Sora defeats the real thief, a Trickmaster she assists Sora by tricking the Queen of Hearts into believing the she asked Sora and Alice to defeat the Heartless as proof of their innocence, and thus they are all saved from beheading.

Kingdom Hearts II[]

Although Alice doesn't appear in the game, her name is part of the password that allowed access to the DTD data-space in Tron's world. Her name is the fourth name in the password.

Kingdom Hearts Coded[]

Alice reappears once again in Wonderland in Kingdom Hearts coded, this time as a data duplicate, she is chased by a Heartless but Data Sora manages to save her, but she is about to introduce herself before she realizes she had forgotten her own name. So Data Sora looks around in Wonderland and find Alice's memory. When Sora finds all of Alice's memories, she gives him the ability, HP Gain. After the events in Data Wonderland are over, she wants Data Sora to make a trade for Attack Chain ++ and she can trade him a Wall Brace for it.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures[]

Alice is a major character in the game available for meet and greets in Fantasyland near her namesake attraction. Alice also takes part in her Disneyland attraction game-play. She is first seen at the Queen of Hearts croquet game and later at the Mad Tea Party where she assists the player in the dance mini game. Female player characters wear her trademark dress while in the attraction, and can purchase it later from the shop after finishing her tasks.

Disney Parks[]

Disneyland Resort[]

Alice appears as a common character at the Disney Parks worldwide. Alice's presence at Disneyland includes the popular musical chairs game daily at 2:30 p.m., participating in the daily Disneyland Marching Band concerts in the main entrance as the park opens and in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle dancing with The Mad Hatter and selected children to "The Unbirthday Song" as well as being one of the star attractions on the "Dreams of Imagination" float with the Mad Hatter in the closed Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams spectacular, joined by those characters mentioned and a pair of acrobats dressed as playing cards. She has also been seen in the finale of Fantasmic! on the Mark Twain and has been known to make a venture to Disney California Adventure from time to time, specifically the Hollywood Studios location (soon to be called "Hollywoodland"), and also appears in Disney's Electrical Parade (formerly known as The Main Street Electrical Parade) there, or visit the World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney Anaheim. She also appears in two attractions: Alice in Wonderland (Disneyland attraction) and "It's a Small World". Alice appears at the grand finale at the live nighttime spectacular World of Color in Disney's California Adventure park.

Walt Disney World Resort[]

At Walt Disney World, Alice and her friends can be seen at the Magic Kingdom, where at the present time, she participates in all parades, and is sometimes found for meet-and-greets by the Mad Tea Party ride in Fantasyland. She can also be found at the United Kingdom section of Epcot’s World Showcase and on occasion at Disney's Hollywood Studios. In addition, she can be found on the main bridge between Tomorrowland and Mickey’s Toon Town Fair on what is billed as “Alice and Mad Hatter’s Treat Party” trail during the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party hard ticket event in September and October along with the other characters mentioned. Alice hosts a daily “Tea Party” with The Mad Hatter at the Grand Floridian Hotel close by the Magic Kingdom along the shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon. Colder weather, especially during the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party in December and after the New Year, will see Alice sporting a long-sleeved variant of her trademark dress to stay warm while doing meet-and-greets with Guests.

International Parks[]

Alice and her friends can also be found at Tokyo Disneyland, the Disneyland Paris Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland, all at the Tea Cups attractions or sometimes at the Alice’s Curious Labrynth at DLP, as well as in most of the parades. At Tokyo Disneyland, there is also a Queen of Hearts themed restaurant called “The Queen of Hearts’ Banquet Hall.” Alice is seen in as of 2010 in the Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dream Lights at that resort, she is represented as half of the second float in Disneyland Paris after the growing scene in The White Rabbit’s house within the “Once Upon A Dream” Parade, and appears in the parades at the Hong Kong resort and theme park.

Trivia[]

  • She is the first mainstream Disney Alice (as there was the Alice Comedies before that).
  • Alice is ticklish as when she is tickled by the flamingo, she is shown to be laughing.
  • Her facial features are extremely similar to Wendy Darling from Peter Pan. It makes sense, because her film movements and voice were taken from actress Kathryn Beaumont.
  • She has the most skirt peeks of any Disney female character.
  • Alice and Wendy were originally voiced by Kathryn Beaumont, but they're now currently voiced by Hynden Walch.
