Hero Overview

It takes patience to correct a misconception with words, and I'm the hotheaded type. You want to understand what I'm about? One blow should be enough to teach you!!
~ Alita.
I am you. And no matter who may condemn you, I'll never let you go. Even if the whole world must be my enemy... I'll never... give up on myself... Strange... It's as if I've been asleep for two hundred years. I am Yoko. And I am... ALITA!
~ Alita embraces her past self.
There were so many things I wanted to tell Ido when I found him again. The painful things, the happy things... so many experiences. I wanted him to see how I'd grown... and to be proud of me. Ido...
~ Alita cries for Ido after learning of his self-inflicted memory wipe.

Alita, birth name Yoko, original name Gally, is the titular main protagonist of Yukito Kishiro's sci-fi action manga franchise, Battle Angel Alita, published in Japan as Gunnm and it's two-part anime OVA, Battle Angel.

Originally a fighter, and a wielder of the lost Martian martial art of panzerkunst, Yoko was responsible for a failed military operation that resulted in the destruction of five ships and the deaths of the 500,000+ lives onboard. Tried as a war criminal, Yoko was sentenced to death by atmospheric exposure and was dropped into the Earth's atmosphere. However, Yoko survived the event, though most of her body, save for her head and part of her upper chest, were destroyed by exposure. Yoko lay in a deep coma for over two hundred years.

Yoko was eventually recovered by cyber-physician Dr. Daisuke Ido. Yoko, who had lost all memory of her past life, was taken to Ido's workshop inside the Scrapyard, where he gave her the name Alita, in memory if his recently-deceased cat of the same name. On a quest to find her true identity, Alita endures tragedy and loss, and makes friends and enemies alike as she ventures out into the depths of the unknown to seek the key to her past.

Portrayals[]

  • In the Battle Angel OVA, Alita is voiced by Miki Itou in Japanese, and by Amanda Winn Lee in English.
  • In the live-action 2019 movie, Alita: Battle Angel, she is played by Rosa Salazar through motion-capture. Salazar also portrays Lynn in the Divergent series, Brenda in the Maze Runner trilogy, Ava Perez in CHiPs, and Rachel Leighton/Diamondback in Captain America: Brave New World. She also voices Alma Winograd-Diaz in Undone, and Copperhead and Train Hostage in Batman: Arkham Origins.

Personality[]

Well, now I've got a goal-- a reason to continue. It's helped me learn something. This might sound obvious, but every human being needs something to stand up to and fight against. If you only run away or protect your own hide, you're bound to go soft and rot away. You've got to keep fighting, or else you'll ruin yourself. Or that's the kind of person I am, at least...
~ Alita.

In her formative years, Alita exhibited a docile and uncertain personality, often relying heavily on her companion, Erica, for support and guidance. This period starkly contrasts with the fierce determination and readiness to employ force that would come to define her later. Despite her initial meekness, Alita matured into a highly competent Künstler. At the age of sixteen, she was entrusted with a critical mission known as Operation Maulwurf in the year ES 386. However, this assignment culminated in her capture and subsequent sentencing to an atmospheric drop as punishment. The traumatic experience of atmospheric entry and crash-landing near Star City resulted in a significant loss of most of her memories and a temporary alteration of her personality.

Two centuries later, Alita's inert form was discovered by Daisuke Ido, who successfully resuscitated her. Upon awakening, her initial personality reverted to that of an innocent teenage girl, devoid of the combativeness that previously characterized her. This innocence was fleeting, however. After courageously saving Ido from a mutant woman, Alita began to instinctively recall her past Panzer Kunst training. This reawakening of her combat prowess coincided with a significant surge in her confidence and independence. Defying Ido's reservations, she resolutely chose to become a hunter-warrior, driven by an unwavering desire to rediscover her lost memories through the crucible of combat. Throughout her arduous journey as a hunter-warrior, Alita consistently demonstrated remarkable resilience. She faced numerous moments of profound self-doubt and fear but repeatedly managed to rebound, reaffirming her conviction in herself and her abilities.

Her journey took another dramatic turn in Last Order. Alita experienced a severe mental breakdown upon the distressing revelation that her original brain had been replaced with a brain bio-chip. This discovery was immediately followed by the complete dissolution of her body due to Super Nova's devastating Seca attack. In this moment of utter despair and near non-existence, she was called out to by Melchizedek. Responding to this call from her failing consciousness, Alita was miraculously resurrected. Her resurrection involved a complex fusion with Tunguska and the absorption of its wormhole core. This profound event not only brought her back but also significantly altered her demeanor. Her personality became markedly more cat-like and mischievous, a transformation physically manifested by the growth of a tail. This unique appendage was intentionally formed from a piece of Tunguska that had adhered to her rear end, a deliberate choice reflecting her newly embraced, playful nature.

Names[]

Across the series, Alita has assumed several names:

  • Yoko: Alita's birthname, used until she was sentenced to death and later woken up from 200-year amnesiac coma.
  • Alita: Her current name, given to her by Dr. Daisuke Ido, taken after his dead cat.
  • Gally: Her name in the original Japanese prints of Gunnm.
  • Octopus-Lips: A joke name regarding her pouty expression.
  • Killing Angel: Nickname given to her during her Motorball days.
  • Angel of Death: Nickname given to her by the Barjack Rebellion, during her TUNED days.
  • A-1: TUNED code name, given to her by Bigott Eizenburg.
  • Kochka: Translates to "cat" in the Czech (kočka), given to her by the Jovians in reference to her catlike appearance and nature, following her defeat of Tunguska.
  • "Original": Used by the three surviving TUNED AR Series 2 androids (Sechs, Elf, and Zwölf), referencing Alita's status as the original TUNED agent on whom they were based.
  • Sister Alita: Used by Aydakatti after she beat him in their practice match.
  • HK-BR035: Experiment codename give to her by Dr. Ngema Neubauer after extracting her Nollin Sonann's body.
  • 99: Aydakatti's former Motorball number, won from him by Alita after she beat him in a practice match.

Powers/Skills[]

I remember constantly asking the red mountain... ...how much stronger can I really get...?
~ Alita questioning how much stronger she could be.
You can still become so much stronger... And true strength is not measured in battle ability. It is in living with pride! So live, Alita... and reach the heights that I could not!!
~ Jashugun encourages Alita to live her life and become stronger than him.

Panzerkunst Mastery: Alita possesses exceptional proficiency in Panzer Kunst, a unique martial art. However, her mastery isn't complete, as she hasn't fully regained her memories of all the techniques and knowledge she once possessed. Typically, these forgotten skills and memories are triggered and recalled during high-stress situations, particularly when she's engaged in combat or when her life is in imminent danger.

Despite being officially ranked as a Geselle (a journeyman or apprentice level in Panzer Kunst) during her involvement in Operation Maulwurf, her capabilities far exceed this designation. After her decisive victory over Qu Tsang in the opening round of the Tenth Zenith of Things Tournament, Caerula Sanguis, a highly respected authority, assessed Alita's combat prowess as being at least at the Höher Krieger (higher warrior) level. This indicates that Alita's true skill level is significantly more advanced than her official ranking suggests, putting her among the elite practitioners of Panzer Kunst.

Throughout the series, Alita demonstrates several panzerkunst moves, including:

  • Ausser Stosse
  • Elbogen Blatt: It features single-edged blades that are integrated into the forearms of a space suit.
  • Einzug Rüstungen: A technique which delivers a vibratory concussion using the elbow.
  • Einsatrhythmen
  • Geschoss Schlag
  • Hertza Haeon: One of Alita's most commonly used moves, the Hertza Haeon is a strike that delivers a high-frequency vibration to the victim, bypassing the victim's armour, and concentrating kinetic energy that, when used correctly, can be used to destroy or at least disrupt function of the brain or heart. It can be nullified with a vibration of the same wavelength.
  • Vershclag

Plasma Manipulation: Alita stands alone among all the Künstlers, as she is the sole individual to have incorporated plasma techniques into her work. This unique application of plasma could therefore be classified as a Seinerweisen, signifying a technique or method that is distinctively her own. Furthermore, her utilization of plasma has consistently been an integral aspect of the various cyborg bodies she employs.

  • Plasma Bissen: Alita possesses the remarkable ability to unleash split-second plasma jets directly from her fingertips. These intensely focused bursts of energy are so rapid and precise that they create virtually undetectable cuts and gouges on an opponent's body. She typically integrates this devastating technique into her hand-to-hand combat, concealing the plasma discharge within seemingly ordinary punches, swift swipes, or defensive parries. This deceptive execution allows her to inflict significant damage before her adversary even realizes they've been struck by anything more than a conventional physical attack.
  • Plasma Boost: Alita achieves instantaneous supersonic acceleration by expelling concentrated plasma streams from both her palms and the soles of her feet. This propulsive force allows her to reach speeds exceeding the speed of sound in a single, sudden burst.
  • Plasma Jet: Alita's Berserker Body could unleash a devastating plasma-based attack and propulsion system. This technique involves a sophisticated process of superheating inhaled air and precisely controlling the resulting plasma. First, Alita would rapidly intake a large volume of ambient air. This air would then be channeled internally through her body to specialized conduits, likely located in her forearms and hands. Within these conduits, a powerful electrical arc discharge would ignite. This arc would act as an intense resistive heater, instantaneously superheating the inhaled air to an extraordinary temperature of approximately 15,000 degrees Celsius. At such extreme temperatures, the air would undergo ionization, transforming into a highly energetic state of matter known as plasma. Once generated, this incandescent plasma would be forcefully expelled from her fingertips, forming a directed jet. Alita would maintain absolute control over this volatile energy using a powerful, internally generated electromagnetic field. This field would serve to contain, shape, and direct the plasma stream, preventing it from dissipating uncontrollably and allowing her to focus its immense destructive potential. Beyond its offensive capabilities, this plasma technique also offers a unique method of propulsion. By precisely controlling the resulting air current (the thrust generated by the expelled plasma), Alita could propel her hands at incredibly high speeds. This would enable her to deliver devastatingly fast and powerful strikes, almost as if her fists were miniature rocket engines. The fine manipulation of the electromagnetic field would allow for dynamic adjustments to the plasma's direction and intensity, granting her unparalleled control over her hand movements and attack vectors.
  • Plasma Soliton: Uses a plasma cupola - a dome-like plasma trapped between competing magnetic fields as a medium to fire a Hertza Haeon made of a plasma-wave soliton.
  • Shape-Charged Kick: A devastating offensive technique Alita can deploy, leveraging the unique, malleable properties of her Imaginos Body. By initiating an electron excitation within her heel, she can mimic the destructive power of an anti-tank grenade. This technique is designed to detonate on direct contact with a target, unleashing a highly focused, explosive force. As its name suggests, the Shaped Charge Kick functions identically to a shaped charge, concentrating its blast in a specific direction for maximum impact against armored targets. Given its immense power and the likely strain it places on her Imaginos Body, it's presumed this technique, much like the Shaped Charge Palm, cannot be used repeatedly in rapid succession.
  • Shape-Charged Palm: The Shape-Charged Punch is a powerful, yet limited, offensive maneuver Alita can unleash, leveraging the unique properties of her Imaginos Body. This technique isn't something she can use repeatedly due to its nature. To execute the punch, Alita initiates an electron excitation within her palm. This sophisticated process allows her to generate an effect akin to an anti-tank grenade, which detonates instantaneously upon impact with a target. As its name suggests, this technique precisely emulates a shaped charge, concentrating the explosive force into a focused jet for maximum destructive power against armor or dense materials.

Hacking: Alita's capabilities have been significantly enhanced through her fusion with Fata Morgana, establishing a profound connection to Melchizedek. This link grants her advanced hacking abilities, allowing her to effortlessly navigate and manipulate digital systems.

One of her most notable new powers is the negation of any hacking attempts directed at her. This means she possesses an impenetrable defense, rendering her invulnerable to digital infiltration. Furthermore, Alita can enter cyberspace simply by dreaming, a unique ability that allows her to function within the digital realm subconsciously. In this dream-state, her mind can interact with the cyber world, giving her an innate and intuitive understanding of its complexities.

Musical ability: After Alita retired from her career in motorball, she transitioned into a new role as a singer. For a period of two years, she performed at the Bar New Kansas, accompanying herself on a keyboard.

Later, after she had become a TUNED agent, Alita picked up the harmonica. This new musical talent was evident when she was encountered by Figure Four; she was playing the harmonica during their meeting onFactory Train 12.

Equipment[]

Alita, a formidable warrior, has wielded a diverse array of weapons and abilities throughout her various incarnations and roles. From close-quarters combat to long-range assaults, her methods of engagement have constantly adapted to her circumstances.

During her time as a hunter-warrior on Earth, Alita often relied on a combat knife to swiftly dispatch her bounties, typically by severing their heads. Her transition into a motorball player saw her adopt a pair of distinctive elbow blades, famously known as the Damascus Blades. These were later fused into a singular, more potent blade that remained her signature weapon even after her retirement from the sport.

Alita's initial foray into firearms involved a Smith & Wesson Model 610 revolver, which she effectively utilized to defeat Zapan while in her Berserker Body. As a TUNED agent, her arsenal expanded significantly to include a range of specialized firearms and ordnance, such as the TUNED pistol and TUNED rifle, providing her with enhanced combat capabilities.

In Last Order, a significant evolution occurred in Alita's combat style. With her original Damascus Blade integrated into the creation of her Imaginos Body, she gained the remarkable ability to generate elbow blades directly from her forearms through the manipulation of her nanomachines. This allowed her to summon her iconic blades instantaneously whenever needed.

Following her rebirth and fusion with Fata Morgana, Alita's Imaginos Body was upgraded to Imaginos 2.0. This advanced form bestowed upon her a long, prehensile cat tail, also composed of nanomachines. Functioning as a third arm, this tail granted Alita the unique advantage of attacking opponents from behind without needing to turn, greatly expanding her tactical options.

In the three years between the conclusion of Last Order and the beginning of Mars Chronicle, Alita's work as a Last Order agent led her to Venus. It was there that she acquired Danko, a unique and powerful sentient cannon. Engineered with Berserker cells, Danko typically perches on Alita's shoulder, its tail coiled protectively around her arm. This extraordinary weapon is capable of firing specialized bullets containing both Berserker cells and a collapsing agent, enabling Alita to neutralize opponents with a single, decisive shot.

Bodies[]

Over the course, of Alita's journey, Alita herself has inhabited several cyborg bodies, including:

  • The Berserker body: After Alita's initial, non-combat cyborg body was destroyed, Dr. Dyson Ido, her adoptive father and a cyber-physician, outfitted her with a significantly more powerful and advanced replacement: the Berserker Body. Ido had originally discovered this highly potent and durable cyborg chassis years prior, recognizing its extraordinary capabilities.
    • Alita utilized the Berserker Body for a period, benefiting from its enhanced strength and resilience in various challenging situations. However, she eventually ceased using this particular body when she transitioned into a motorball player, a popular and dangerous sport in their dystopian world. For her motorball career, she adopted a more specialized body designed for speed and agility on the track.
    • The Berserker Body, once discarded by Alita, later fell into the hands of Desty Nova, a brilliant but eccentric scientist with his own complex agenda. Ultimately, it was acquired by Zapan, a formidable hunter-warrior who had a history with Alita, leading to further conflicts and dramatic developments in their intertwined stories.
  • The Motorball body: Alita's Motorball body significantly enhanced her speed and flexibility, making her exceptionally agile on the track. However, this came at a trade-off: it offered reduced power and limited offensive weaponry. Given the intense and hazardous nature of motorball, the body's limbs were frequently damaged and required constant replacement. This meant that peak performance wasn't always a given, as the body was in a perpetual state of repair. Visually, this distinctive body was purple, a detail confirmed on the cover of Killing Angel and further showcased in a three-minute CGI sequence depicting Alita in motorball action.
    • It was during her time in this body that Alita first acquired the legendary Damascus Blade. Initially, it manifested as two separate blades, each mounted on one of her wrists. These dual blades served her until they sustained significant damage during a confrontation with Armblessed. Following this battle, the blades were re-forged into a single, unified Damascus Blade, which then became Alita's primary and most iconic weapon.
  • Several Civilian bodies: Upon her discovery and revival by Dr. Ido, Alita was outfitted with her first civilian body. This particular body had a unique history: its decorated arms had previously belonged to a prostitute who met her demise at the hands of a mutant woman. This initial body, however, proved to be impermanent. It was utterly destroyed during Alita's first confrontation with Makaku, a pivotal moment that forced her to adapt and acquire a new form.
    • Alita's second civilian body came into play after her retirement from the brutal sport of motorball. Her formidable Berserker Body, which she had used during her motorball career, had been controversially sold by Ed in a misguided attempt to keep her engaged in the sport. Consequently, her motorball body was deemed unsuitable for everyday life, necessitating a more civilian design. This second body, while more appropriate for daily living, also faced considerable peril. It was almost entirely destroyed in a fierce battle with Zapan, leaving Alita critically vulnerable. Furthermore, she narrowly escaped execution by the Factory for committing a Class A Offense – the unauthorized use of a firearm, which she employed in her fight against Zapan.

Last Order provides further insight into Alita's history with cybernetic bodies, revealing that she has been a cyborg since her youth during the Terraforming Wars. This suggests a long and complex history of body modifications and changes. It's implied that Alita underwent body changes as she matured, and she may have even utilized a specialized body when she executed Operation Maulwurf, a critical mission from her past. These revelations in Last Order deepen our understanding of Alita's enduring connection to her cybernetic forms and the role they've played throughout her long and turbulent existence.

  • The TUNED body: Upon her integration as an agent of Tiphares, Alita was equipped with the TUNED body, a highly advanced and specialized chassis designed for frontline operations. This sophisticated body provided her with capabilities far exceeding those of a typical combat cyborg.
    • A key aspect of Alita's deployment in the TUNED body was her constant, real-time connection to the Ground Investigation Bureau (GIB) via satellite. This link ensured continuous oversight and direction from a designated operator. To enforce compliance with orders, the operator possessed the critical ability to administer a Pavlovian shock stimulus to Alita, a powerful deterrent against disobedience.
    • The TUNED body itself was a marvel of Tipharean engineering. It granted Alita the ability to move at supersonic speeds and boasted exceptional durability, allowing her to withstand significant damage in combat. Despite its robustness, the TUNED body was categorized as a "soft" body. This meant its vital systems were intricately supported and maintained by nanotechnology, which, while advanced, introduced a crucial vulnerability: the body was susceptible to overheating and potential malfunction when exposed to extremely high temperatures.
    • Complementing its inherent capabilities, the TUNED body was outfitted with a diverse array of effective support weapons. Many of these armaments were ingeniously designed to resemble insects, likely for stealth or psychological impact.
    • A distinctive visual feature that accompanied Alita's TUNED body was the application of permanent eye black to her face. This unique marking became an enduring characteristic, subsequently incorporated into her replicas and remaining a prominent detail on her even more advanced Imaginos Body.
  • The Imaginos body: Following a devastating encounter in Battle Angel Alita, where Desty Nova seemingly ended Alita's life with a destructive explosive, he subsequently resurrected her with a radically new form. This new body, known as the Imaginos, marked a significant leap in biotechnological integration, relying even more heavily on nanomachines than her previous TUNED body.
    • The Imaginos body was engineered to replicate human physiology with unprecedented accuracy, mimicking biological functions down to the cellular level. This advanced design effectively transformed Alita into a nanomachine-based organism, blurring the lines between machine and life. Throughout the narrative, particularly in the early stages of Last Order, two distinct versions of the Imaginos body emerged.
    • The original Imaginos Body was a more rudimentary design, notably lacking the advanced color-changing and shape-altering abilities that would become defining features of its successor, the Last Order version. Furthermore, it did not incorporate the distinctive eye black detailing, which had been a consistent characteristic of the body's aesthetic since its Motorball iteration.

As the supercomputer Melchizedek began its critical shutdown, and the towering city of Tiphares teetered on the brink of collapse, threatening to crash down upon the Scrapyard below, Nova provided Alita with a crucial trigger. This wasn't just any device; it was a mechanism designed to initiate a profound transformation within Alita's Imaginos body.

With the imminent catastrophe unfolding, Alita activated the trigger. This allowed her to fuse directly with the sky hook's docking bolt – a vital structural component connecting the airborne city to the ground. This fusion wasn't merely a physical connection; it enabled her to undergo a colossal metamorphosis. Her Imaginos body, enhanced by Nova's trigger, transformed into an immense, nanomachine-based Tree of Life.

This titanic, living structure served as an anchor and a support, effectively preventing the catastrophic descent of Tiphares onto the Scrapyard. Alita, through this extraordinary transformation, single-handedly saved both Tiphares and the Scrapyard from complete annihilation.

  • Last Order version: This particular iteration of the Imaginos unit distinguishes itself by omitting the integrated accelerator. Despite this significant design difference, it retains a remarkable capability: it can achieve a profound symbiotic connection with Alita.
    • Through this advanced interface, the Imaginos is able to directly synchronize with Alita's thoughts. This isn't just a basic control link; it allows the Imaginos to intuitively understand and adapt to her intentions, preferences, and even her subconscious needs.
    • A key manifestation of this deep connection is the Imaginos's ability to dynamically alter its physical characteristics. It can instantly modify its coloring scheme, shifting through a vast spectrum of hues and patterns to perfectly complement Alita's desired aesthetic or to blend seamlessly into different environments. Furthermore, it possesses the astonishing capacity to reconfigure its very shape. This means the Imaginos can fluidly transform its form, optimizing its contours and structure to precisely suit Alita's immediate requirements, combat style, or environmental demands, offering a level of personalized integration that goes far beyond conventional equipment.
  • Plasma torch: Unlike the Berserker Body, which was inherently designed with specialized organs for plasma generation, Alita's Imaginos Body presented a significant challenge: it had to generate plasma through a more organic and unconventional process. This deviation from the Berserker Body's built-in functionality caused Alita considerable difficulty and frustration.
    • Alita's struggles with plasma generation in the Imaginos Body ultimately forced her into a dire situation. To unlock this crucial ability, she had to intentionally place herself in mortal danger. This extreme measure was necessary to activate her dormant survival instincts, which in turn triggered the organic process required to produce plasma.
    • The arduous journey to plasma generation in the Imaginos Body, however, yielded a superior outcome compared to the Berserker Body. While the Berserker Body was limited to producing only a single, small, and brief jet of plasma, the Imaginos Body, once its capabilities were unlocked, could generate a long-sustaining torch of plasma. This plasma could be projected from each of Alita's fingers and its length could be varied at will. This distinctive and powerful ability, stemming from the plasma emanating from her fingertips, earned the move its evocative name: the "Plasma Claw."
  • Damascus Blades: Alita's cherished Damascus Blades, an integral part of her identity and combat style, endured severe metal fatigue during the year Nova spent meticulously resurrecting her. The prolonged period of disuse and the inherent stresses on the molecular structure of the blades rendered them unusable in their original form.
    • Recognizing their unique properties and Alita's deep connection to them, Nova, in an unexpected move, chose to incorporate the damaged blades as a crucial ingredient in the creation of the Imaginos Body. This decision, initially made without Alita's consent, caused her considerable distress and anger. The loss of her iconic weapons, particularly in such a manner, felt like a profound betrayal.
    • However, a pivotal moment during her intense battle with Toji revealed the unexpected silver lining of Nova's controversial act. In the heat of combat, Alita discovered an astonishing new ability: she could replicate the Damascus Blades, generating them directly from her own body. These newly manifested blades emerged from her forearms, extending as formidable elbow blades. This newfound power not only compensated for the loss of her original weapons but also offered a more integrated and adaptable form of combat, demonstrating the profound and unforeseen benefits of her transformation within the Imaginos Body.
  • A human body: Five years after her transformation into the Tree of Life, Koyomi embarked on a significant journey, venturing to Ketheres Elyion. It was there that she had a fateful encounter with Figure Four and a remarkably senile Nova. Upon their meeting, Figure, clearly concerned, immediately questioned Nova about Alita's whereabouts. Nova, in a moment of startling clarity amidst his general confusion, led them to a hidden passage: a hole within the very structure of the Tree of Life. This path descended into the depths, revealing a colossal, pulsating bulb that had formed there. Within this bulb, Nova, during his more lucid intervals, had meticulously left a message. This crucial revelation indicated that faint traces of Alita's genetic code were not lost but were instead preserved within the nanomachine cells dispersed throughout the Tree of Life's intricate systems. More importantly, the message offered a glimmer of hope: it suggested that the regeneration of Alita might be possible. Acting on this profound discovery, Figure decisively shattered the bulb. From within its shattered remnants, a human Alita emerged, signaling the dramatic conclusion of the original manga series.
