Allan Red is the deuteragonist of the adult animated comedy series Smiling Friends. He is an employee at Smiling Friends Inc.. Unlike Pim and Charlie, Allan usually does only office and inventory work at the company, but occasionally will go help them on their missions.
He's voiced by the series' co-creator, Michael Cusack, who also voices Pim and Professor Psychotic in the same show.
Appearance[]
He is a tall, red humanoid with an oblong body and a slouched posture. He has a prominent nose and large almond-shaped eyes.
He usually only wears a light blue necktie.
Personality[]
In contrast to Pim's optimism and Charlie's pessimism, Allan is an indifferent, amoral, and uptight character who speaks in a very deadpan manner. He is portrayed as a neat freak, often seen obsessively organizing and counting objects around the office, which may suggest he is in charge of the company's inventory. Allan frequently panics when he notices something missing. Despite his eccentric personality, he occasionally acts as the "straight man" of the group, especially when faced with something even stranger than himself.
Unlike the other Smiling Friends, Allan doesn’t appear to have much passion for his work and is more concerned with completing tasks rather than genuinely making people smile. His primary motivation seems to be financial, as demonstrated in the episode "Frowning Friends," where he leaves the company to join the Frowning Friends because, as he claims, they offered a better 401(k). Despite this, Allan is determined and willing to go to great lengths to complete his work, even risking his life. While usually calm and unemotive, Allan can be confrontational and prone to anger when provoked.
Trivia[]
- Allan's name was erroneously spelled "Alan" in the episode descriptions of the HBO Max release of the show's first season. This was later corrected in the second season.
- Allan's last name was revealed by Zach Hadel in the Director's Commentary.
- Despite Mr. Landlord inviting Allan to drink diet soda with him, it's been previously revealed that Allan dislikes said soda.
- A recurring gag within the series is that Allan’s scream sounds nothing like his normal voice, being either too low or too high in tone to sound natural.
- At 24 years old, Allan is the youngest of the Smiling Friends.
