Allays are supporting protagonists in the sandbox video game Minecraft as well as it's spinoff, Minecraft Legends. They are benevolent and helpful flying mobs found in Illager structures.
Allays are passive, pacifistic mobs that can benefit players by carrying items for them, as well as finding based on what was given to them. Similar to Villagers, they do not attack or fight back in any way. They were added in version 1.19 in 2022, which was "The Wild Update". They are the first flying mob added to the game that can assist the player.
Spawning[]
Allays spawn near pillager outposts, inside cages made of dark oak wood. Between one and three can be found in a cage. They can also spawn inside woodland mansions - which are mansions containing the "evoker" and "vindicator" types of illagers - and are also found imprisoned in those structures, inside jail cells. Like in the outposts, one to three allays can spawn in the cells.
In the beginning of Minecraft Legends, the Hosts gift the player the Legendary Lute, which allows them to summon five Allays of each type. At the Improvement Hub, the player can choose to build an "Improvement Abundant Allays," giving them the ability to summon two extra Allays. They can also be found rarely in Allay chests, which randomly spawn in the Overworld.
Personality[]
Allays, alongside Villagers and possibly parrots, are the most innocent mobs in Minecraft. They are harmless, kind, helpful, supportive, loyal, trusting and fun-loving magical beings. They are also complete pacifists, as they never harm anyone in any sense, even in self-defense. The allays do not take a lot of effort for players to gain their trust, as they become helpful the second a player gives them an item.
Behavior[]
By default, allay wander around while flying. They have the ability to be seen in the dark, however, due to the fact that Minecraft does not have dynamic lighting, they do not illuminate their surroundings. Once the player gives an allay an item, they will then follow the player while looking for dropped items that the allay is holding. Allay will then deliver found items to the player.
The range of allays following the player is up to 64 blocks, while their range in looking for items is 32 blocks from the player. Once the allay delivers items to the player, there will be a three-second delay before seeking items once more. Similar to the player, allays have an inventory system, but can have one "inventory slot", compared to the players having 36 (not counting armor). Allays will go back to wandering around if a player takes an item back from them. Although some items such as weapons and armor might have enchantments or specific names by having a name tag used on them, allays can not discern items with these unique properties. If a note block is played within 16 blocks of an allay, it will approach that note block, then spend 30 seconds finding items around the playing of that note block.
If the player plays a disc in a jukebox, allays within range of the music will start dancing. Being a flying mob, allay can't enter water, but it can still try to collect items that are submerged. A magical connection between players and allay is formed, which prevents players from harming allay directly. Allays can naturally regenerate health, being two per second.
An allay can be duplicated by giving it an amethyst shard while it's dancing. This is largely because amethysts in the game make music-like chimes when interacted with. There is a five-minute cooldown before allays can duplicate again. In the Bedrock Edition of the game, allay can teleport to players traveling to the Nether. They cannot do this if the player travels to the End.
Minecraft Legends[]
There are two different types of Allays: the Build and Gather Allay, which are yellow and blue respectively. As it's name would suggest, the Build Allay helps the player construct various structures, such as improvements, spawners, defences, and ramps. The Gather Allays are used to gather resources such as wood or stone. Improvements need to be constructed in order for the Gather Allays to collect higher-tier resources, such as redstone, iron, and diamonds. Both Allays can be used the cure Netherrack if the proper Improvement has been built.
The player starts off with five Allays of each type on hand, able to obtain more through chests or the "Improvement Abundant Allays" tower. Multiple Allays can be order to do different tasks at once, depending on how much the player has. Once an Allay finishes their task, they return to the player, awaiting their next use.
Heroic acts[]
- Assisting players by finding more items for them.
- Never harming any other mob or player in any sense.
- Reducing work the players must do by collecting dropped items.
- Having a magical field that doesn't allow players to accidentally kill them.
- Help the player gather resources and build defences for Villages.
- Construct ramps for the player and their army to cross.
- Curing Netherrack into natural blocks, reducing the Piglin's pollution.
- Being completely passive, never harming anyone.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown why allays are imprisoned by Illagers, and given the fact that the developers of Minecraft refuse to place any definite lore or explanations in the game, it will remain unknown. The only possible explanations for this are fan-made theories:
- One theory is that Illagers are aware of the allays' benevolent nature, so they are imprisoned just for that.
- Another theory is that in the past, the allays have done some sort of act that put Illagers at a disadvantage, and the illagers had imprisoned allays out of revenge.
- A third theory is that allays are captured to bait players into rescuing them, which entails players walking into hostile territory in order to save them.
- The Build Allay in Minecraft Legends is yellow, while all vanilla Allays are blue.
- In Minecraft Dungeons, a mob called the Wisp can be found in Ancient Hunts, taking the form of the Allay's concept design. The Wisp likely inspired the creation of the Allay.
