Alucard, secretly Count Dracula, is one of the main protagonists of the anime/manga series Hellsing. He is an incredibly powerful vampire and is utterly devoted to his master Integra Hellsing, serving as the Hellsing Organization's trump card.
The assumed identity of Count Dracula, who in his past life was Vlad "The Impaler" Tepes III, Alucard operates as a vampire hunter as part of his servitude to the Hellsing family and has been modified to stand against his own kind. Although considered to be anti-hero, Alucard is a remorseless and pitiless vampire who has no qualms about being a monster and taking the lives of countless innocents (even nonchalantly stated by himself).
He is voiced by Jōji Nakata (who also voiced Sojiro Sakura in Persona 5, Sol Badguy in Guilty Gear and Leonidas in 300) in the Japanese version of the anime and Crispin Freeman (who also voiced Itachi Uchiha in Naruto, Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Siegfried Schtauffen in Soulcalibur III, Roy Harper, Will Harper, and Guardian in Young Justice, Gyomei Himejima in Demon Slayer, and Helios in the God of War series) in the English version.
Appearance[]
His usual outfit is comprised mainly in a classic Victorian fashion, including a charcoal suit, leather riding boots, and a flamboyant, intricately knotted red cravat, covered by a long, red duster. He also wears a red fedora hat with a wide, floppy brim and a pair of circular, heavily tinted, wire-framed red sunglasses with goggle sidings; by the second half of the series, he no longer wore his hat or glasses.
His default appearance was a tall, large man with ghostly white skin, although despite his pallid complexion was deemed handsome; he had pitch black hair that would change length depending upon the situation. His eyes were most commonly red, sometimes a reddish orange, and upon his return from limbo, had become pink like Warrant Officer Schrödinger's, possibly reinforcing how he absorbed the being's power. As a human, his eyes were either blue or purple.
When unleashing Control Art Restrictions, his clothing would become a tight black leather outfit with affectations akin to a straight jacket.
When reverting to his original form, his outfit was a Medieval Eastern European suit of armour with a dark red cape. His body was the same, except for facial hair, with a notable moustache.
His informally known Girlycard form made him change into the form of a young girl with long black hair and a costume of an entirely white Russian-inspired wardrobe with a dark red tie. Interestingly, despite the decrease in age and different gender, he maintained his normal male voice.
He has a vast range of supernatural techniques and is an expert gunfighter, his enhanced strength allowing him to wield pistols that most would consider heavy weaponry.
Personality[]
As he is immortal and invincible, Alucard is very egotistical. He has little regard for the lives of those he kills. He often fights with extreme cruelty, and could be labeled as a sociopath for his tendencies to torture his opponents. Whether human or otherwise, anyone he kills is typically with extreme violence and often prolonged sadism if possible; although, he does refrain from killing innocent people or those who aren't provoking battle against him. Even so, unless through extenuating circumstances, he would refuse to engage in combat unless given direct command to do so by his master, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing.
Despite his gleeful cruelty, he holds a strict moral that only human beings can kill monsters as shown when he was fighting Father Anderson. He said that he'd gladly die fighting a human, and even cries when expressing his own self-loathing; but quickly show disgust when Father Anderson pierced his heart with the Helena's nail, transforming him to a monster.
He's also very loyal to his master Integra wherein he hesitantly asks his master what to do next and obeys it without complaining. He can often burst into maniacal laughter if her orders are particularly ruthless, such as if gaining permission to slaughter mere human pawns; even so, his joy is also a reflection of his admiration for her strong will. His strong respect for Integra has levels of physical and emotional attraction, however, he is content to be her servant, although sometimes enjoyed teasing her.
While only obeying Integra's commands, he can be prone to whimsy, as he personally decided to sire Seras Victoria, after concluding the only way to save her was to "kill" her; he did ensure to request permission from Seras if she wanted to keep living no matter the cost, which she agreed. Alucard isn't cruel to Seras, though can be callous and if she disappoints him, he would angrily deride her. His general treatment to her is akin to a pet that he is coarsely but gradually training. Despite his typically blunt attitude towards her, after unleashing his Control Art Restriction System Level Zero, and reunited her in London during a lull in the battle, he affectionately patted her head and expressed a gentle term of endearment; thus, showing beneath his sadism and blood-thirsty attitude that he is capable of compassion, which was also often shown in his interactions with Integra.
Alucard exudes an aura of confidence and indifference, but hides a deep well of trauma; the sexual abuse he suffered as a child, his experiences in war against the Ottoman Empire as a man, his untimely execution that forced him into becoming a vampire out of desperation, and even his defeat at the hands of Abraham Van Helsing, all still haunt him. Since he was raped by a priest, yet fought his wars in God's name only to be brutally defeated, he grew to hate God, as he considered the deity as either not real or a remorseless coward that allowed suffering out of malice; even when he claimed to be acting in accordance to God's will, his interpretation was of a cruel wrathful God that accepts prayers through violence of battle and war. His wrath over centuries of bloodshed is ironically what drives him to commit more atrocities, as sating his sadism is the only way he knows how to ease his own despair, although it is a short-lived escape.
Despite his vicious nature, he also displayed a gentle consideration and respect for humanity, especially those whom he feels embody the purest human spirit, whether they be friend or foe; this respect can be lost during the bloodshed of combat, but he regains it upon calm returning. He also expressed awe and love for the aesthetics of aging in human beings, as he finds his own unaging immortality as hideously ugly, and evidence of his own weakness; likewise, he expressed contempt for others who chose vampirism instead of keeping the weight of a human life, with the sole exception being Seras Victoria, as he read her life and determined that she had earned power. While he does chastise her for refusing to surrender her human conscience and morality, he also respects her for being able to remain a human at heart, even with the temptations of greater power.
Biography[]
Beginnings[]
His reign of terror is stuff of legends, Dracula would meet his arch nemesis a man named Abraham Van Hellsing. Taking and turning Mina Harker, The young wife of Jonathan Harker a retailer from England. This was in the end Dracula's undoing as Jonathan teamed up with Van Hellsing and finally faced Dracula head on, Van Hellsing defeated the beast but never killed him, It is not known why Dracula joined Abraham and now serves all his descendants.
We next see Alucard in Hellsing: The Dawn; he appears as a young girl (Girlycard) during world war II at Warsaw, Sir Arthur Hellsing, Abraham's descendant now controls the powerful vampire and has sent him along with Walter C. Dornez a young Hellsing operative, to destroy a group of Nazi's named Millennium who are trying to create a group of powerful vampire warriors. During the battle Girlycard is cut in half and the young Walter is left to face most of Millenniums power alone. It is unclear what happened here and has lead to much speculation between fans. What is known for sure is that Alucard was later imprisoned by Arthur believing that Alucard was a drug that could become too easy to use him for everything. Sadly Arthur died in 1989 and left the Hellsing organization in the hands of his twelve year old daughter Integra Fairbrooks Hellsing.
The Evil Uncle[]
This of course did not sit well with her uncle Richard Hellsing, who began hunting her round the Hellsing manor in order to kill her. It is unknown why Walter C. Dornez was away at the time of Arthur ’s death, but many believe he had planned what happened next as Richard hunted, Integra. Remembering her father’s words, she went looking for the powerful weapon that would protect her. She found a mummified corpse in a room and felt defeated. Her Uncle had found her, lifting his hand he strikes her and draws blood that lands in front of the corpse, it starts to move as Richard makes a grand speech, in a flash the two guards that had come with Richard were killed by the reborn Dracula now known as Alucard. Richard opened fire to only be strangled by the monstrous vampire. Dropping his gun Richard is dropped to the floor and Integra shoots him. Bowing down Alucard swears his loyalty to the real Hellsing blood line.
The Rise of Seras[]
Alucard is sent to to deal with a rouge vampire who is pretending to be a priest. He has taken over the full town and uses them as ghouls and takes out a small police force that was sent into deal with the situation. In the police force a young police woman known as Seras Victoria was in the force and is about to be raped by the vampire. Alucard appears and is shot down by the army of ghouls. The priest is about to finish what he started when all the ghouls die and Alucard is reforming. The priest grabs Seras and hold her as a hostage, as the priest holds her Alucard ask Seras if she is a virgin, Seras does not answer at first and the priest screams asking what Alucard is doing. Seras whispers yes and Alucard blows a hole in her chest. As she falls, Alucard kills the vampire and catches Seras and drinks from her, turning her into a vampire. Returning to Integra he hands over Seras and Integra ask him why he turned her and he smile replies why not and walks away.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | Cut off his head? Stabbed through his heart? Don't think of him as one of those vampires. He won't die from just that! Just as you're the crystallization of anti-monster technology... ...the Hellsing family has spent 100 years gloriously building him into the ultimate undead. The vampire Alucard! | „ |
~ Integra describing Alucard's power to Alexander Anderson. |
Alucard, like all vampires, requires blood to stay alive. However it is not shown in Hellsing as to whether what would happen if a vampire was not to drink blood. Seras Victoria tried to stay away from blood as much as possible during the first half of the manga and had no adverse effect whatsoever. Also, Alucard survived 30 years without drinking blood can raise the speculations that Vampires do not require blood to survive, but can be only be regarded as a craving - although, in this case, he wasn't on Earth, but a limbo where he needed to kill off the millions of souls he consumed as to regain a sense of self enough to allow his return to the living world. But it is still unclear whether Alucard survived because of his new found power, although among his final lines are a version of Schrodinger's catchphrase, which can infer that he assimilated the cat boy's abstract existence for his own use.
- True Vampire Physiology:
- Immortality: Despite claiming there is no such thing as immortality, due to his eternal youth and endless regeneration, he is in all practically an immortal undead.
- Siring: Upon drinking blood from a female virgin's body, he can transform them into a fledgling vampire, who could become true vampires like him should they drink blood, even if from him.
- Super Strength: Alucard can lift far in excess of 10 tons effortlessly.
- Super Speed: Alucard can move at teleportation-like speeds.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Alucard can catch objects moving at supersonic speeds with ease. He even caught Rip Van Winkle's bullet and fought father Anderson multiple times to a standstill (both were moving faster than average vampires which usually dodges multiple machine gun fires).
- Rapid Regeneration
- Hypnosis
- Mind-reading through blood
- Flight
- Gravity Immunity: He can walk along any surface as if it were the natural pull of gravitational forces
- Limited Familiar Summoning
- River of Death: He is able to attract and absorb blood from countless dead bodies to both enhance his existing powers and regain familiars to act as his undead army.
- Shape-shifting
- Phase Shifting
- Umbrakinesis
- Control Art Restrictions: Possibly an innate ability, but implied to have been augmented by Hellsing science, sorcery, and alchemy.
- Immune to typical vampire weaknesses: Decapitation, staked through the heart, and sunlight don't kill him - although, he is weaker during the day. While these elements don't kill him, if repeated enough, then enough of the souls he had absorbed would be erased, leaving him vulnerable again.
- Familiar Summoning: He can unleash every soul he had ever consumed to their original forms, and could use them to even wield unique powers and abilities if they had them, and they would enact his will, with the implication that they carried extensions of his mind, rather than have any semblance of their original selves left.
Weapons[]
Alucard is an exceedingly lethal combatant even when unarmed, due to his extensive supernatural abilities and strength, but he also uses various weapons in battle. These have included swords, machine guns, and traditional vampire-slaying tools such as stakes and crosses. Additionally, Alucard has two signature weapons, a pair of oversized and overpowered handguns named the .454 Casull and the Jackal. In Hellsing: The Dawn, he wielded a Thompson Sub-Machine Gun.
In his original form as Vlad Dracula, he had a large sword with a Templar-style hilt.

Trivia[]
- Much like Seras, Alucard interacts with a personification of his weapon in a dreamscape. The Jackal appeared, calling itself Jackal Willis, as a parody of American actor Bruce Willis; Jackal Willis even references some of the actor's filmography, including Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, and The Fifth Element.
- When goading Alexander Anderson in London, Alucard called him "Catholic" while labeling himself a "Dragon"; while dragon is a reference to his true name of Dracula ("son of the dragon"), in this context it also invites the legend of Saint George, a Catholic knight that fought and killed a dangerous dragon.
