Heroine Overview

Alisa "Alya" Mikhailovna Kujou, is the titular main protagonist of the romance light novel and anime series Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian.

She is voiced by Sumire Uesaka in Japanese and by Sarah Natochenny in English.

Appearance[]

Renowned for her comely appearance, Alya is a half Russian-half Japanese teenage girl long, light purple hair adorned with a red ribbon on the side. She has striking blue eyes and a calm, composed expression. Alya is noted to be the most beautiful girl on her entire school and gets the attention of all the boys wherever she goes. Her typical outfit as a student consists of a light beige blazer with gold cuffs over a black, white, and red school uniform. The uniform includes a black pleated skirt connected to a black vest, a white collared shirt with a red bow tie. She wears white thigh-high stockings with gold bands near the top and dark brown shoes.

Personality[]

As the most popular girl in her school, Alya places great importance on her appearance, understanding its role in social interactions, yet adheres strictly to school rules, avoiding makeup. Confident in her natural beauty, she remains unfazed by the attention it garners, not seeking to attract admirers. Not only does her immense beauty charm anyone, she is also a top achiever academically and athletically, holding a significant student council position from her first year. Her prideful demeanor also makes her a possessive girl with strong envy, particularly when one of her male classmate, Masachika Kuze, interacts with other female students. Despite a tough exterior and frequent teasing of this classmate, she harbors deep feelings for him, often masking her emotions with denial and self-restraint until she can no longer ignore them. Her academic prowess and disciplined behavior are well recognized, although she tends to be indifferent to others unless provoked by particular individuals who challenge her standards. She eventually develops caring and unbeknownst feelings for Masachika in her pursue of trying to get his attention.

Backstory[]

Alisa "Alya" Mikhailovna Kujou was born to a Russian father and a Japanese mother. She is the younger sister of Mikhail. She comes from a well-off family. This privilege, combined with a nurturing environment, allowed her to excel and develop many talents. However, she is determined not to be defined by her advantages but by her relentless drive to always strive for the top, consistently putting in more effort than others.

As she matured, she developed social skills, but her core ideals and opinions remained steadfast. Her time in Vladivostok shaped her cold and rigid personality. Disappointment and lack of motivation from her classmates revealed their ignorance to her, fostering an unconscious condescension. Realizing this, she distanced herself to avoid conflict, making her appear distant and reserved. Despite this, her talent and competitive spirit set her apart.

In her third year of junior high school, Alisa returned to Japan due to her father's work. On her parents' recommendation, she transferred to Seirei Educational Institute, one of Japan's most prestigious schools. She hoped to find peers who could compete with her and share her dedication to study, nurturing faint expectations.

However, these expectations were cruelly crushed when she took a proficiency test immediately after transferring, scoring first place in her school year despite her five-year absence from Japan. This achievement, despite her disadvantage as a transfer student unfamiliar with the test trends, instantly made her popular among the students, who flocked to her like a celebrity. Her immense beauty further contributed to her popularity. Despite the attention, she was stunned to encounter a certain boy's indifference towards her.

Trivia[]

  • The series was originally going to be written in the isekai genre, where the female protagonist (possibly Alya) would be obviously reincarnated into another world where she speaks Japanese to the male protagonist (possibly Kuze). Unbeknownst to her, the male protagonist also knows Japanese due to being reincarnated as well. This version was later scrapped and be written into what is now known as the romcom series.
