Biography[]
Backstory[]
Ambrosius was born as a descedent of Gloreth, who trained to become a knight. During his training, he fell in love with Ballister Boldheart, a kid with a background as a commoner. In contrast to Ballister, who was disliked by the public for his background, Ambrosius was loved by the people of the kingdom and was the most anticipated knight of his generation. Despite this, he supported Ballister no matter what.
Nimona[]
Ambrosius is first seen comforting Ballister at the catwalk of the stadium where Queen Valerin plan to pronouce them as knights, telling him that he earned it due to working harder to become a knight than any other cadete, and that people would love Ballister like he does. Later, while putting their armor, Todd, who bullied Ballister during his time at the academy, would appear and trick him into thinking he would apologize for how he treated him before mocking him for his lower status.
Ambrosius tried to stand up to Todd, but Ballister stopped him. After this, the Director of the Institution would appear and tells Ballister that the kingdom would see him for who he truly is during his pronounciation as a knight, with Ambrosius then jokingly calling him the "teacher's pet".
They would then go to the middle of the stadium where the queen pronounces Ambrosius as a knight before doing the same to Ballister, with Ambrosius cheering for him afterwards. However, Ballister's sword would open and shoot a laser to the queen, killing her. To stop Ballister from accidentaly causing more destruction, Ambrosius cuts off his arm.
The stadium's jumbotron would fall and Ballister would escape the stadium. According to the Director, Ambrosius was heartbroken by what had happened at the stadium. He is later seen during Ballister's escape with Nimona, who the latter presumed by Ballister's reaction to be his nemesis.
After Nimona and Ballister escaped and the part of the Institute's castle was destroyed, Ambrosius decided to lead the search team for Ballister and Nimona and have them arrested for their crimes. During his time looking at the kingdom's cameras, Ambrosius found images of "Ballister" playing freestyle jazz at a subway, and while Todd tried to imediatly go after Ballister based on the initial fotage, Ambrosius decided to see the whole footage, as something felt wrong to him due to Ballister hating freestyle jazz, which made him find the real Ballister, who was going to use the subway to get to the market.
He then goes to the subway station with a group of soldiers and used gas to put Ballister and Nimona unconscious to no avail due to them escaping before the gas affected them. He then goes to the market, where he finds Nimona disguised as a small boy beating up the Institute's squire, so he goes to stop her.
Then, the squire is knocked unconscious and Nimona and Ballister put him in the car the latter was using to hide from the autorities. Ambrosius would try to stop them by poiting a crossbow at Ballister, but he was unable to fire it and Ballister and Nimona escaped. Later, Ambrosius was going to the Intitute's caste with the Director, whom asked what he had in mind.
In Ambrosius thoughts, he reveals that he's insecure about him being Gloreth's descendant and regret for cutting off Balister's arm. Back to reality, Ambrosius tells the Director that he's fine. At the castle, they would find Ballister and Nimona, with the latter knocking all the knight guards unconscious.
Ballister would then tell Ambrosius that the Director killed the queen, but when Ballister tried to show him the proof of his innocence and the Director's crimes, she ordered for the phone that had a video of her switching Ballister's blade during the night where Ballister would be pronounced as a knight to be destroyed, lying that it was a weapon.
Ballister would then try to convince Ambrosius to trust him despite the proof of his innocence being destroyed. However, due to the Director's manipulations, Ambrosius decided to order Ballister and Nimona's arrest. Angered by this betrayal, Ballister allowed Nimona to use her shapeshifting powers and the two would fight against the knights sorrounding them.
Ambrosius would then put the Director in a car and fly it away before going to fight Ballister. While fighting Ballister, the latter questioned if he mattered anything to Ambrosius or what is it all a lie, with Ambrosius calling Nimona a monster and calling him out on how he is also keeping things from him as well. Ballister would then defend Nimona, and after desarming Ambrosius, the latter asked if he was going to kill him like he did to the queen, only for Ballister to stab the sword at the floor next to him and telling Ambrosius that if he believed in him killing the queen then he never knew him at all.
Later, Ambrosius would try to confront the Director, only for her to lash out at him due to Ballister and Nimona having just filmed her admiting to have killed the queen and fraiming Ballister. Sometime later, Ambrosius would try to have the Director arrested for her crimes, only for her to show him a scroll of Nimona as the creature that Gloreth fought a thousand years ago and manipulated him into thinking that her in the video was just Nimona faking being the Director.
Ambrosius would then meet with Ballister at a bar, where he shows him the scroll and tells him that Nimona was using him, as well as apologizing for how he treated him and for cutting off his arm. Ballister would then leave the bar, and asked Ambrosius why couldn't he leave him alone, with him saying that it was because he loved Ballister.
After hearing that there was a creature about to attack the city, Ambrosius ordered his knights to clear the streets in order to stop as many civilian death as possible. The creature was Nimona, who had turned to a kaiju-like creature, and was going through a rampage across the city.
During Nimona's attack at the city, Ambrosius would save an old woman from being killed by Nimona, and ordered his knights to bring the civilians to the subway to protect them from Nimona's rampage. Ambrosius would then noticed the cannons of the kingdom being turned into the city and informs the Director about it, only for her to reveal that she was the one who ordered it, and despite Ambrosius begging her not to use it since it would destroy half of the city and kill countless civilians, the Director refused to listen, saying that it wouldn't matter the people who would die as the "monster" would as well.
This made Ambrosius start to question what the knights were doing, and went to the Director to confront her before seeing Nimona being calmed down by Ballister, who had stopped her from using the sword of Gloreth's statue to kill herself. After this, the Director still ordered the knights ti fire the cannons, but Ambrosius refused and tried to convince her into seeing their views on other creatures as wrong, only for her to refuse to listen to him and using a laser from her staff to knock out the knights before going to fire the cannons herself.
Ambrosius tried to stop her from using the cannons to no avail. After Nimona saw the cannons, she decided to fly to the cannons and destroy them, presumably killing her and the Director, as well as destroying part of the kingdom's wall. Ambrosius would later comfort Ballister over Nimona's presumed death. Months later, the people of the kingdom would start to travel outside of its walls, and Ballister and Ambrosius would begin dating again.
They would later go to a memorial made for Nimona, who, along with Ballister, was now seen as a hero. Ambrosius would try to make Ballister feel happier by showing him a drawing a kid made for Nimona that said that the kingdom loved her.
Personality[]
Ambrosius is a kind individual who wants to protect his kingdom and his people, and tries to be supportive of Ballister despite Ambrosius being more loved by the public and Ballister being from a lower status. He was utterly shocked when Ambrosius seemingly killed the queen, and, despite this, would try to avoid killing or hurting him despite having multiple occasions where he could have done it.
It's revealed in Ambrosius' mind that he was insecure about him being a descendant of Gloreth and his responsibilities, saying that he never asked to be Gloreth's descendant. He also feels deep remorse for cutting off Ballister's arm, as well as envy for Nimona becoming Ballister's best friend as he feels Ballister abandoned him for her. Despite his insecurities and remorse, he tries his best to stay calm and look like a stable individual.
He would later apologize to Ballister for betraying him and everything else he did, and tried to convince him to help him stop Nimona due to the Director manipulating him into thinking Nimona was responsible for turning Ballister into a criminal and was using him for her own interests. However, after seeing Ballister hug Nimona, he would start to sympathize with her and refused to allow the Director to use the cannons to kill her, and would also go to honor Nimona at her memorial after her apparent death.
Ambrosius also spends most of the movie questioning if the Institute or the Director were right, as his morals were constantly used for the Director to manipulate him. However, he briefly shows that his morals were stronger than his loyalty to the Institute, and tried to have her arrested for her crimes, only to be tricked by her again when she showed him a scroll of Nimona as a dragon fighting Gloreth a thousand years ago.
Despite this, he would fully defect from the Director's command when she revealed her lack of empathy in using the kingdom's cannons to kill Nimona, despite knowing that half of the city would get destroyed and thousands of innocents would get killed, and refused to follow her orders and made the other knights do the same.
Trivia[]
- In the webcomic, Ambrosius was far more arrogant and delusional than his movie counterpart would end up being, as it's revealed he shot off Ballister's arm not to stop further harm, but out of spite and jealousy, and wouldn't have felt remorse for it until the film's climax, where he helped in stopping Nimona from rampaging across the kingdom.
- In the movie, Ballister said that Ambrosius is allergic olives.
