Tarnum: I am sorry.
Ancestors: For what?
Tarnum: For the things I have done while searching for the Sword of Frost. I thought they were necessary.
Ancestors: And we agree. Tarnum, doing what is best for all - even if that deed is disgusting to you - that is true honour! We cannot fault you for that.
~ The Ancestors forgiving Tarnum for his actions while looking for the Sword of Frost.

The Ancestors are the overarching protagonists of the video game Heroes Chronicles. They are a group of three ancient Barbarian heroes who decide the fate of Barbarians who enter the Hall of Judgement.

History[]

The Ancestors stand in the Hall of Judgement, the place where the Barbarians of Antagarich go when they die. They weigh the deeds of the Barbarians and allow entry to Paradise for those who have done good in life.

When Tarnum stood before them in the Hall of Judgement, the Ancestors deemed him unworthy of entering Paradise because of the atrocities he committed as the Barbarian King. However, they also saw potential for good in him as he had led his own people to freedom from the tyranny of the Wizard-Kings, so they sent him back to life as an immortal and on various quests to perform acts of heroism in order to redeem himself for his crimes.

Sometime later, one of the Ancestors accepted the worship of a brutal tribe of Barbarians and took on the form of a war god, becoming known as Vorr the Insane. Vorr kidnapped the other Ancestors and imprisoned them on the Fiery Moon, before beginning to destroy the world. Eventually, Tarnum saved the other two Ancestors, and with their support and counseling, he cured Vorr of his insanity using the sap of the World Tree before continuing with his quests as the Immortal Hero.

Before and after the Reckoning, the Ancestors believed Tarnum to have finally found redemption and offered him to enter Paradise. Tarnum refused, however, partially as revenge for their punishment which he considered unjust, but also to protect those around him.
