Ankara is a supporting character in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

She is a former master of the Abbot Monastery, having been banished by the Master for her obsession and mad ravings about finding the lost city of Azra. Unknown to everyone, Ankara was manipulated by the Black Lotus into revealing the cities location, leading to its destruction, with her true motivation being to rebuild the city and redeem herself for what she did.

She was portrayed by Clare Higgins.

Personality

As a former master of the Abbot Monastery, Ankara's banishment led to her being known as the Mad Witch, gaining a reputation of being insane. In reality, she suffered from the trauma of having accidentally led the Black Lotus to Azra, and had dedicated herself to rectifying that mistake. This leads her to ultimately aiding in calling Pilgrim back to the Badlands despite the danger that he poses, simply because she was desperate to fix what she did. In the process, she took the Abbot Bajie under her wing, telling him that he could be the one to bring back Azra by location the Azran radio tower that would contact Pilgrim. However, in her final moments she made it clear she didn't want destruction, and called Pilgrim out of guilt, as when the Black Lotus came for her, Sunny, and Bajie, she used her Gift to protect them, and when the Black Lotus mortally wounded her and Bajie, she used her Gift to heal him before succumbing to her wounds.

Powers & Abilities

• Master's Gift: As a former master of the Abbot Monastery, Ankara possessed one of the most powerful Gifts in the world, comparable to the Master herself. She was extremely dangerous whenever she activated it, and required specialized techniques such as the Gift blocking needles or Magnus' mastery over pressure point techniques.
  • Seeing Beyond: Ankara displayed the rare ability of being able to use her Gift in order to search the world, which she used in order to locate Tilda and Gaius Chau when Baron Chau captured them. She could even access this power when the Gift blocking needles were used on her, although she could only share the vision once the needles were taken out.
• Martial Arts: Ankara's Gift gave her great proficiency in combat, being able to take down several Black Lotus members that came to kill her.

Trivia

• Ankara is one of the few characters to have access to a working radio, as she lives inside of an crashed airplane that she converted into a house while still containing a working radio box.
