Biography[]
Background[]
Anna was born in 1900. Her parents relocated to Switzerland before World War I. Her father worked in Zürich's American Embassy, while her mother was a housewife. Anna spent a lot of time among the politicians at the embassy and grew up working in a repair shop. Her grandfather was a clockmaker and taught her on how to fix most common problems. She also has an uncle named Tom who works in a candy store. She was at some point employed by Eure Tages as a journalist.
The Heir[]
In March, 1929, Anna receives an invitation to a press event in Milan where Molinelli Industries, a successful Italian sports car company, is launching a new sports car. She boards the train on the evening of 19th and runs into Osvald Bernstein, her old friend and a long-time employee of Molinelli Industries. As they dine, she gets glimpses of Aldo Molinelli, the president of the company, his mistress and secretary Paola Tornetta, and Fabio Verno, an embittered engineer. Later that night, she's invited to speak with Paola. Paola reveals that she invited Anna to the press event because she's become worried about how Aldo appears to have been fearing for his life recently. Before they can continue their conversation, Anna has to leave as Aldo is about to enter Paola's compartment.
The next morning, Anna meets Aldo who agrees to give her an interview when the train stops at the town of Porto Ceso. She waits for Aldo at the station café with Osvald, but he doesn't show up even when it is almost time for the train to leave. While trying to find Aldo, Anna and Osvald find Paola in a heated argument with Silvia, Aldo's wife who was supposed to be in Milan. Anna eventually finds Aldo's dead body in Paola's compartment and alerts the local police. Though she wants to be of assistance, Officer Cozzi is not open to the idea of "amateurs" meddling in police investigation, but his subordinate, Luigi Affini, is more willing to accept Anna's help.
Officer Cozzi quickly arrests Silvia, convinced she murdered Aldo for his affair with Paola, but Anna decides to hear Silvia's side of things. Silvia tells she received an anonymous letter that instructed her to hide in the train and see Aldo's infidelity for herself. Anna finds the letter as proof of Silvia's words, and her suspicions start leaning more towards Mr. Verno. Anna also spots someone seemingly trailing her and Osvald, but they escape into the train tunnel before she can catch them. She also tries to comfort Paola whose heart is broken by Aldo's death. Later that same day, Paola commits suicide by jumping from the cliffs, and Anna blames herself for failing to realize how depressed the young woman was.
Later that evening, Anna breaks into Paola's compartment with Osvald and discovers the murder weapon; a knife with the Porto Ceso coat of arms engraved on the handle. They are afterwards approached by Mr. Verno who aggressively tells Anna he had nothing to do with Aldo's murder. Osvald then tells Anna the reason for Mr. Verno's bitterness towards Aldo's family; he owned his own company, but when he took a loan from Aldo's father, Mario Molinelli, he was unable to pay it due to the order being lowered later, and was forced to sell his company.
Deadly Snowstorm[]
In December, 1932, Anna drives to the Swiss Alps as she likes visiting the place every winter. On the evening of 3rd, she makes it to Hotel Reger during a snowstorm. The next morning, the hotel owner Otto Reger introduces her to the other guests; a Swiss priest Father Hans Lenz, an Italian opera singer Giovanni Rossi, an American realtor Walter McCain, a German medical doctor Max Hartmann, a Swedish secretary Ulla Lund, a wealthy German industrialist Christian Petersen, the latter's French nurse Claudia Perret, and Charles Clark, a Scottish professor of archaeology. Only one guest, a physics professor Adam Kinsky, is missing. Anna, Otto and Walter are forced to break into his room and discover him to have died of an apparent heart attack. The telephone lines are dead because of the last night's blizzard, and the only road to Cima di Vren, the nearest town, is covered in snow. The people in Hotel Reger are cut off from outside world for several days.
Later that same evening, Ulla is discovered dead in her room. Though she too appears to have died of a heart attack, Anna doesn't believe it's a coincidence. She discovers with Otto and Walter that both Ulla and Professor Kinsky's bodies have puncture marks that seem to have been made by a syringe. They start suspecting there is a murderer among them and wonder if it's Dr. Hartmann since he too was missing until Ulla's body was found.
Personality[]
Anna is an intelligent and curious reporter with a passion for crime-solving. She is a rational problem solver who avoids making assumptions without further evidence and is rarely wrong. She also states herself not to be superstitious.
She is generally polite and kind to people and ready to offer a favour for anyone who needs help. She also gives the people she's better acquainted with their fair share of humorous needling or scolding from time to time. She also doesn't like to boast on her past exploits and takes it hard if she believes she could have prevented tragedies by being more attentive, such as when Paola commits suicide and Judit is murdered.
Anna is also determined; she will press forward to find the truth even when the police believes the case is already solved and tries to stop her involvement. While generally law-abiding, Anna is not above snooping through people's stuff or breaking and entering to find clues in her quest to find the truth. She will also scold a friend for their more serious mistakes and give murderers a piece of her mind about their evil deeds.
Powers and Abilities[]
In addition to her investigative skills, Anna is a highly skilled journalist whose stories have earned her a fair share of fans. She speaks English, German and French. She has an affinity for lock-picking and mechanical skills that enable her to work on many machines, from fixing watches to defusing bombs. She can drive a car and has some moderate skill in using a gun.
