Anna Windass is a fictional character and major protagonist of the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. She appeared from 11th November 2008 to 1st June 2018.

She has been portrayed by Debbie Rush.

History

Anna Windass first came to Weatherfield with her son Gary Windass and his father Eddie in 2008. They clashed with the Platt Family after Gary starts a conflict with wayward David Platt over his girlfriend Tina McIntyre. Over the years, the two families get along and the Windass clan settle themselves in Weatherfield whilst overcoming personal family problems at the same time. Eddie leaves the family after Anna adopts her newfound daughter Faye Windass and later starts a relationship with Gary's boss Owen Armstrong.

In 2013, Anna got acquainted with her would-be archenemy and tormentor Pat Phelan in what would become her biggest story arc. The feud began in 2014 when Phelan sexually harassed Anna as part of his plan to successfully entrap both Owen, his business partner, and Gary in a blackmail scheme as revenge for Owen forcing Phelan to repay his £4,000 debt. Then when Anna attempted to get Phelan to stop with his torment, Phelan agreed to stop in exchange for Anna sleeping with him. Anna relented and in doing so was raped by Phelan as he blackmailed her into sleeping with him. Eventually, Anna's rape ordeal resulted in her relationship with Owen collapsing after he found out and both of their respective families underwent financial difficulties due to Phelan's blackmail scheme.

Following Phelan's return in 2016, his feud with Anna continued for the next two years as he constantly tormented her and undermined her credibility whilst she desperately tried to expose his crimes to no avail. She did succeed in turning Phelan's daughter Nicola Rubinstein against him after revealing the truth about her ordeal with him, which in doing so caused Nicola to later find out that Phelan had also raped Nicola's mother prior to her birth. In retribution, Phelan framed Anna for the attempted murder of Faye's boyfriend Seb Franklin in a ladder accident. She was wrongfully convicted in January 2018 but was released off-screen just months after Phelan's crimes finally became public knowledge. Anna then confronted Phelan in a final showdown and ultimately stabbed him with a kitchen knife, killing him before he could escape once again. After killing Phelan and ending his reign of terror for good, Anna left Weatherfield and is last heard to be living in Durham.
