Aonung is a supporting character in the 2022 movie Avatar: The Way of Water. He was the son of Tonowari and Ronal, and the brother of Tsireya and an unborn sibling.

Aonung is portrayed by Filip Geljo.

History[]

Aonung was born into theMetkayina clan in 2154 or 2155 to Tonowari and Ronal. He was raised in the village Awa'atlu, where he trained to become the next clan leader under his father. Aonung became a fierce hunter and free diver.

Avatar: The Way of Water[]

Aonung is present when the Sully family need asylum running away from the RDA. He is immediately hostile towards the Sully children for being different, especially Kiri and Lo'ak for their human traits. He was obligated to teaching the Sully childrenon his father's orders and later picked on Kiri for being weird. A fight broke out as Lo'ak came to defend his sister and he punched Aonung in the face.

Jake made Lo'ak apologize to Ao'nung, who invited him to go hunting with his friends beyond the reef. Lo'ak initially declined as his parents had warned him against going there. However, Ao'nung convinced him to come along. Upon arriving at Three Brothers Rock, Ao'nung instructed Lo'ak to call the fish, but then he and his friends left him there as payback. Later that night, Aonung was scolded by their parents for taking Lo'ak off the reef after they found him, though the latter was led back to the village by a tulkun who saved his life. Aonung was surprised when Lo'ak took the blame himself instead, which earned Aonung his friendship and respect.

After Lo'ak told his friends about how he was saved by a tulkun, Aonung explained that Payakan was banished for apparently killing several tulkun and Na'vi in the past. However, Lo'ak refused to believe his friend was capable of murder.

Aonung participated in the skirmish at the Three Brothers, trying to save his sister, Tsireya. However, the battle saw to the death of Neteyam. After the battle, Aonung attended Neteyam's funeral and comforted his sister by caressing Tsireya's shoulder

Personality[]

Ao'nung used to be arrogant and cruel. He bullied the Sully children, especially Kiri and Lo'ak, when they first moved to live with the Metkayina clan. He wad also best friends with Rotxo, who disapproved of Aonung's bullying. After Lo'ak took the blame of them all swimming beyond the reef and the cruelty of the RDA, Aonung changed his ways. Instead, he now helps the Sully children fighting the humans and the RDA.

  • Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary and The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water list his name as "Ao'nung".
  • Aonung is very similar to Tsu'tey.
