Aplegatt is the a overarching protagonist of the fourth Witcher book, Time of Contempt, serving as the main protagonist of the first chapter. He is a royal messenger from Aedirn working for the King of Aedirn Demavend III.

In the Netflix adaptation he is played by Jim Sturgeon.

Biography[]

Past[]

Aplegatt was born in Aedrin where he grew up and lived permanently. Some time later Aplegatt married an unnamed woman and fathered three daughters where the eldest fell in love with and married a young man trying to become a merchant. However, the boy was constantly unsuccessful in his career as a merchant, so the messenger always tried to save some money for the couple so that they would have something to support themselves with. When the messengers were losing their usefulness and importance for the kings, Aplegatt fell into poverty and began to use sorcerers instead of messengers to convey information.

Return to service[]

In 1267 Aplegatt became a messenger again on the orders of King Demawend III as he is tasked with observing the situation in the face of the upcoming war. Demawend used the messenger because he stopped trusting sorcerers and decided to return to the old way of issuing information, to which Aplegatt did not complain about returning to service.

Initially, Aplegatt rode with his horse on the route to Vizima leading through Maribor and then stopped at a wagon stop. Aplegatt asked two old men with an irritated tone why there was such a stop. To which the old men replied that the manticore killed some of the travelers, blocked their way and almost killed the young boy if he had not been saved by the Witcher who killed the manticore. Aplegatt wanted to meet with the Witcher who saved the child from the manticore out of curiosity, but he learned that he had already left.

When the Messenger reached Vizima and delivered the message to King Foltest, he received another message from the king that he was to pass on to Vizimir from Redania. It was a message regarding the provocation of the Nilfgaardian Empire regarding the exact date of the drop of Lyrian and Aedrin troops on the other side of the Yaruga. When Aplegatt read the messages carefully, he set off for Redania.

Some time later during his journey to Redania Aplegatt stopped at an inn near the village of Zavada, where he got a new horse and food to spare for the journey. When he wanted to set off in the morning, he came across Ciri and Yennefer in the stable, who were travelling together. Ciri was so tired that she noticed Aplegatt, who politely greeted her. When he noticed Cirilla's absent gaze and asked about her if everything was okay, because he thought she had fallen into a trance in which she had predicted his final fate. However, he did not care too much because he thought that the girls were in a trance and Aplegatt considered it nonsense.

Confrontations at the tavern[]

On the way to Redania Aplegatt stopped at an inn to rest from his journey suddenly entered dressed in a cloak Geralt of Rivia who advised the guests of the inn to remain calm. When the evil assassins entered to kill Geralt and then track down Yennefer and Ciri Aplegatt entered a fight with them to defend the people in the inn from them. However, before the fight with the assassins took place the witcher killed all the assassins in the inn and then left. After this macabre spectacle in the inn Aplegatt once again mounted his horse ready for a long journey on the way to Tretogor, the capital of Redania.

Sending a Message to Redania and Death[]

Aplegatt finally to the Redanian capital of Tretogor in the middle of the night wait for a few hours until the sleeping guards wake up and open the gate for him. Then Aplegatt met with Dijkstra who read the message he delivered and then got another package to deliver another message to King Demavend. On this message it was written to hold off on the action on the Yaruga due to the Nilfgaardian Empire learning about the plans of the kings of the north. After a few hours of rest Aplegatt set off again to deliver another message.

During his journey back to Aedirn, Aplegatt reached the forests of the Lower Pontar at dawn, where a group of Scoia'tael led by Yaevinn was. Yaevinn, wanting to kill anyone who got lost in the forest area, chose Aplegatt despite Toruviel's protests, arguing that it was not worth killing this man because it was not known whether he served on the side of the North or was simply a neutral lone traveler rushing through the forest. To which Yaevinn disobeyed her and shot the messenger with a bow, piercing him straight in the back, causing his death. Due to Aplegatt's failure to deliver the message from Vizmir, Lyria and Aedrin invaded Lake Yaruga too early, which led to the Nilfgaardian Empire conquering Liria and the outbreak of the Second Northern War.
