~ April O'Neil

April O'Neil is the tritagonist of the 2023 animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. She is a High school student and the Turtles' first human friend/closest ally. She pursues the Superfly story and hopes to be hailed as a hero so people can move past her embarrassing nickname.

She is voiced by Ayo Edebiri, who also voiced Envy in Inside Out 2.

Biography[]

Early History[]

Most of April's early life is unknown. When she was younger, April got suffered a performance anxiety and vomited horribly on the entire set while on camera. Since then, her classmates mockingly called her "Puke Girl" and never let her live past it.

Personality[]

April O'Neil is one of the first human friends that the TMNT met. Upon first meeting them, she stated that their heroic impression made her want others to see her as a hero as well. However, she also admits that heroics may have affected her if she were freaked out and become averse to them. April wants to move past her mocking alias "Puke Girl" by her classmates, hence why she wants to write the Superfly story.

She is also notable for being the first human to never express prejudice towards Splinter, as previous humans were either disgusted or afraid of his appearance. This makes Splinter realize that there are a few good humans who are capable of being kind and compassionate.

Appearance[]

April is a teenage girl of African-American descent. She has brown eyes, freckles, and short auburn hair that is mostly worn in box braids.  She wears a black shirt with a white print, a button-up yellow jacket and ripped pants, white socks, white All-Star sneakers, and a black cap on her head. She wears a golden pendant around her neck and wears a silver-spiked bracelet on her wrist.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Skilled Investigator: April started an investigation of Cynthia Utrom's company and worked with Leo to expose her and prevent her from creating more mutant soldiers.
  • Skilled Reporter: April is just starting her newspaper career, and has proven to be a resourceful reporter. She used to get nervous about going out in front of others on camera. " However, at the end of the film, April finally gets over her anxiety and commandeers a news broadcast to explain the mutants' good intentions of defeating Superfly and saving New York, sending citizens to come to their aid.

Trivia[]

  • This character is an adaptation of April O'Neil, first created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. This version was developed by Brendan O'Brien and designed by Woodrow White.
  • This is the second version of April to be designed as black (and non-white in general) in a TMNT TV series or film.
    • The first is April O'Neil from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, also produced by Nickelodeon.
  • This is the third teenage incarnation of April in TMNT, following her incarnations from the 2012 TV series and from Rise of the TMNT.
