~ Argyle to Mike. |
Argyle is a supporting character in the Stranger Things franchise.
He is Jonathan Byers's best friend who works as an deliveryman for Surfer Boy Pizza in Lenora Hills, California. Having no friends of his own, Argyle develops a friendship with Jonathan after he and his family move to California in 1985. During spring break of 1986, Argyle's life goes spiraling when he finds out Jonathan, his younger brother, Will, and their friends, Mike and Eleven have endured conflicts with government agents and a dark dimension known as the "Upside Down". Despite being freaked out of these discoveries, Argyle helps Jonathan, Will, and Mike find Eleven as she restores her powers and get to Hawkins, Indiana to fight an evil from the Upside Down.
He is portrayed by Eduardo Franco.
History[]
On March 21, 1986, Argyle arrived at the Byers home to pick up Jonathan, Will, and Eleven/Jane for school. As they boarded in Argyle's van and left, the Byers children's mother, Joyce yelled at Argyle to slow down.
At school, Argyle and Jonathan attended their woodshop class where Argyle attempted to show off his marijuana-themed birdhouse, only to notice that Jonathan looked glum. He asked if his attitude stemmed from his girlfriend, Nancy Wheeler was ditching him and refusing to visit him during spring break. Jonathan protested, claiming that she wasn't ditching him and that she had to work. Argyle then attempted to break down Jonathan's flawed plan to go with Nancy to Emerson College, despite it putting him in financial stress and ultimately not being what he truly wanted to do. Jonathan defended Nancy, saying that she was incredibly ambitious and hardworking while stating his relationship with her was fine, but Argyle remained suspicious.
Personality[]
Argyle is extremely laid-back and relaxed; likely a result of him smoking marijuana often. Argyle is also shown to be a very kind person. He constantly has an uplifting attitude and has no problems with driving his friends places in his van. Additionally, when Agent Harmon died from his wounds, Argyle crafted a makeshift headstone for him. Despite not even knowing Harmon's name, Argyle wanted to commemorate his sacrifice. Despite his laid-back personality, Argyle is not outright unintelligent. When he, Jonathan, Mike and Will were lost trying to find The Nina Project, Argyle stumbled upon some tires in the dirt and correctly identified them as military, pointing them all in the right direction. Argyle was even smart enough to create a sensory deprivation tank for Eleven, using a pizza dough freezer and supplies from the Surfer Boy Pizza restaurant.
Trivia[]
- His name is likely a reference to the 1988 film Die Hard, in which Argyle was the limo driver assigned to pick up John McClane from LAX and transport him to the Nakatomi Plaza.
- As an extremely light-hearted and comedic character, Argyle was narratively intended to provide levity as the show's tone grows darker and darker thanks to the threat of Vecna.
