Aria Holmes Kanzaki (神崎・H・アリア Kanzaki H Aria) also known as Sherlock Holmes IV is the titular deuteragonist of the Hidan no Aria franchise. She is a transfer student of Butei High School and an Assault department S-Rank Butei who aims to make Kinji Tohyama her partner. Over the course of the series, she and Kinji fall in love, but Aria struggles with telling him how she really feels.
Personality[]
A haughty, loud, outspoken young girl, Aria is quick to put herself before others and expresses her opinions bombastically, whatever they may be. Her hubris however has become a massive weakness for her, as it prevented her from being able to completely understand social interaction and human empathy, which left her without friends or allies prior to her meeting Kinji. Because of her being solitary for much of her life, Aria is quite socially inept ad quite clueless on multiple subjects.
Aria is also very bossy, as shown when she barged into Kinji's dorm room to declare him as her slave (though it was implied this was because of her being too proud to call him her "partner"). She also has a short-tempered to the point of constantly threatening to shoot Kinji or anyone else who annoys her for that matter (with others mentioning relationships in front of her being the thing that sets her off the most due to her being celibate and seeing relationships as nothing but a waste of time). If someone ever hurts or betrays Aria, she will make an active effort to distance herself from them. As she demonstrates when she ends her friendship with Reki following the latter referring to Kinji as her husband and later calling Kinji himself a traitor for trying to make peace with his half-sister Kaname not long after the latter had tried to kill Aria and the other Baskerville girls.
Aria has a strong sense of determination, referring to words like "tired" and "impossible" are mere excuses for people who are scared of their full potential. However, Kinji believes the real reason she feels this way about those words is due to her status as an aristocrat and growing up in a society of "winners" that has resulted in her looking down on those weaker or less wealthy and fortunate than her. She is also very stubborn and arrogant and isn't willing to own up to her own mistakes, to the point where she'll insist proof from people stating she did something wrong before believing something that goes against her initial assumption. In addition, she is never willing to take 'no' for an answer, going so far as to stay the night in Kinji's apartment when he refused to become her partner until he finally agreed.
Despite her immaturity and ego, Aria is endlessly loyal towards her loved ones will willingly do whatever it takes to protect them, especially her mother and Kinji. She is fiercely protective towards Butei, since the first rule of being a Butei is to put one's faith in others, and is even willing to risk her life to save people she never met before. She also knows how overbearing she can be at times, though she nevertheless insists it's for the good of her friends and family. While aggressive, she has a prevalent soft spot for cute things and sweet tooth (particularly when it comes to peach buns, eating at least seven upon first meeting Kinji). In spite of being a formidable opponent in battle, she's terrified of thunder. Despite putting up a tough facade, Aria is more sensitive than she'd admit; as when Kinji told her he despised her shortly after they met, she pretended to not be affected in spite of being deeply hurt in actuality.
Aria is extremely intelligent in spite of her boisterous and hot-tempered personality. Because of her having inherited none of her ancestors' incredible deduction abilities, she gained the nickname "Defective Holmes" as a result. This is interestingly the one flaw she isn't ashamed to admit in spite of her egotistic personality. She often relies on her intuition, such as when she became convinced that Durandal is targeting Shirayuki. Unfortunately, due to her struggles with being able to explain her theories logically, other people rarely (if ever) actually believe her, much to her endless frustration. While stubborn and full of herself, Aria often does learn from her mistakes and is aware of her limits, which she demonstrates while trying to convince Shirayuki to form a trio with her and Kinji following Jeanne's defeat. She also has a strong sense of empathy, as shown when she lashed out at Riko for attempting to force her to steal a rosary that belonged to her mother, only to feel immense remorse once she learned that Riko's mother had died and the rosary was all she had left of her late mother.
