The Armed Detective Agency are the main protagonists of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise.
Throughout the series, its members serve as a group of detectives with abilities who are assigned by president Yukichi Fukuzawa to investigate and solve crimes that are considered too violent and/or difficult for the city police to handle, as well as to protect the people of Yokohama.
All of the members with abilities are a direct reference to famous Japanese authors of the same name.
Foundation History[]
13 years prior to the main timeline, security police officer Yukichi Fukuzawa visited his client's office, discovering that she was murdered recently. Then, he encountered a young and arrogant detective genius named Ranpo Edogawa, deducting that the secretary of the company was the one responsible for killing the president. Shortly after the young Sakunosuke Oda assassinated the secretary and surrendered to the police, Ranpo properly introduced himself to Fukuzawa at the cafe, which revealed his background as an expelled student from his previous schools and the death of his parents.
Searching for jobs, Fukuzawa decided to take the young orphan to his next mission at Sekai Gekijou, a local theater in Yokohama. They first met a new client named Egawa, the manager who assigned them a murder investigation job after receiving a letter by the mysterious "V". During the play, Ranpo told Fukuzawa his fear of people that he considers them as "incomprehensible monsters". Based on the young detective's talented deduction skills, Fukuzawa gave him special glasses, stating that the former is special for possessing a Gifted ability.
With his glasses on, Ranpo opened his own eyes, finally realizing that the people around him are not incomprehensible monsters, but rather foolish humans. Upon activation of Ultra-Deduction for the first time, he happily declared that he can save the audience at the theater during the second act, where everyone, including Fukuzawa, witnessed that the lead actor Tokio Murakami was unexpectedly killed onstage. Ranpo began deducting about the surprising mystery behind the murder case: it was revealed that Murakami wanted to portray actual death to further succeed his acting career, with the help of Kurahashi, a playwright. In other words, no one was held accountable for the murder in the theater, aside from the lead actor himself with a selfish reason.
In the aftermath of the murder incident at Sekai Gekijou, Fukuzawa escorted Ranpo at the car with officer Mitamura, driving him to the police station. However, they arrived at the abandoned warehouse closer to the harbor, where Mitamura invited Ranpo to work with V, due to the young detective's flawless deduction skills. Declining his offer, Ranpo calculated Fukuzawa's arrival at the warehouse to knock the V guards unconscious, including Mitamura, shortly after his visit at the prison to obtain further information from Oda, who was arrested and watched by Ochi Fukuchi. Angrily scolded by Fukuzawa for risking his life for his deduction skills, Ranpo tearfully apologized to the swordsman for doing so. A day later, they discovered that Mitamura was killed while in police custody, and Fukuzawa wondered about the mysterious V, which is truly referred to "five" by Fyodor.
One year later, Fukuzawa and Ranpo arrived at the Bankoudou Hall to meet Soseki Natsume, a man who was involved during the Sekai Gekijou murder incident by witnessing the traps and helped the duo to solve the case. There, Fukuzawa sought Natsume's assistance to get a Skilled Business Permit and set up an organization known today as the Armed Detective Agency.
Active Members[]
Yukichi Fukuzawa - The founder and president of the Armed Detective Agency, as well as a former bodyguard and assassin. Taking his presidential role seriously at the Agency, Fukuzawa puts the welfare of his subordinates as a priority, and he is highly skilled with martial arts and swordsmanship. He highly regards order and peace for the sake of Yokohama, which led his ultimate goal to establish the Agency in the first place 12 years ago. His ability is "All Men Are Equal", which gives him access to all official members of the Agency, including successful applicants (Atsushi and Kyouka, for example), to fall within its range based on their values and character, letting it suppress their abilities.
Ranpo Edogawa - The co-founder and the greatest detective of the Armed Detective Agency. Born with a higher amount of intelligence, Ranpo is prideful of his ability that earns many respects from everyone, especially his comrades. Despite this, he tends to act childish in his free time, always seen eating sweets at his desk area and does not know how to do simple tasks such as riding a train or bus. However, he is otherwise serious whenever a troublesome situation appears such as when the President is infected with the Cannibalism virus. Ranpo possesses a non-ability called "Ultra-Deduction", which allows him to solve a mystery in seconds.
Akiko Yosano - The sole doctor and personal physician of the Armed Detective Agency and former student medic during the Great War. On the surface, Yosano is a graceful woman with her capability to heal one's wounds with her ability; however, she is also an aggressive sadist who admonishes enemies who do not regard human lives, due to her traumatic childhood with the Agency's arch-rival and Port Mafia leader, Ougai Mori. She possesses a rare healing ability, called "Thou Shalt Not Die", allowing her to only heal wounds that are at least partially fatal. Due to its functionality, Yosano carries deadly weapons to heavily injure her patients with minor wounds before healing them at full health.
Doppo Kunikida - The idealistic member of the Armed Detective Agency and former college algebra instructor. Being well-suited for the second-in-command position, Kunikida is highly dedicated to his job at the Agency. He is always seen with his notebook that includes his ideals to guide his life properly, including a list of 58 conditions for a perfect spouse and his daily routines and agenda. Not only Kunikida writes his ideals and daily schedules on his notebook, but also uses it to activate his ability, "The Matchless Poet", creating a non-living object from a written page that is no larger than its size.
Osamu Dazai - The suicidal member of the Armed Detective Agency and former Port Mafia Executive. Taking words from his late best friend Sakunosuke Oda four years ago, Dazai decided to join the side that saves people, which led to saving the orphaned Atsushi from starvation later on. Aside from his sharp and witty personality that make him resourceful to the Agency, he is rather comically overdramatic, wishing to commit double suicide with a pretty woman (particularly with the maid from Cafe Uzumaki). Dazai possesses a power-nullifying ability, called "No Longer Human".
Junichiro Tanizaki - The humble member of the Armed Detective Agency and Naomi's older brother. Junichiro is considered the most normal person out of everyone in the Agency, lacking an unusual quirk such as Dazai's suicidal tendencies and Ranpo's childish behavior. Despite this, however, he has an otherwise intimidating and violent side towards anyone who lay a finger on his sister. Thus, he is the most dangerous member of the Agency, in terms of liability. Junichiro possesses "Light Snow", an illusion-projecting ability best used for recon missions.
Kenji Miyazawa - The carefree member of the Armed Detective Agency, hailing from a rural farming village called Ihatovo. Given his simple childhood with happy, supportive villagers, Kenji is popular for his hospitable personality towards everyone in Yokohama. He decided to join the Agency for the sake of helping and protecting others, including the President, with his life. Despite his youthful appearance, he possesses an ability that grants him immense strength, called "Undefeated by the Rain".
Atsushi Nakajima - The kindhearted member of the Armed Detective Agency with a tragic upbringing, due to being abused by the orphanage director countless times. Atsushi has a great sense of morality, given his painful childhood he had to endure as an orphan. In addition, he displays sympathy among lonely people who struggle just like him, such as the ex-Port Mafia assassin Kyouka and ex-Guild member Lucy. Being part of the Agency, Atsushi is supportive of his new comrades, never hesitating to help others in need. He is the user of the special ability that transforms him into a white tiger with an enhanced strength, called "Beast Beneath the Moonlight". Due to this, he is wanted by Port Mafia and (formerly) the Guild, placing a bounty on him for 7 billion yen.
Kyouka Izumi - The stoic member of the Armed Detective Agency and a former assassin of the Port Mafia. Orphaned at a young age, Kyouka displays a lack of human emotions, as she was taken in and ordered by the Port Mafia to kill people, dubbing her as the "Killer of 35 People." Upon being rescued by Atsushi from the train hijacking incident, however, Kyouka started developing human emotions gradually, as well as minimize her attempts of murdering more people and use her ability for good. Aside from her default aloof persona, she has a soft spot for cute things such as bunnies. Through her cell phone, Kyouka possesses an ability called "Demon Snow", inherited from her late mother, to follow the user's commands.
Clerks[]
Kirako Haruno - The reliable member of the Armed Detective Agency. Outside of work, Haruno tends to slack off, seeing many pictures of her cat Mii-chan on her laptop. She is usually seen with part-time worker Naomi.
Naomi Tanizaki - The strong-willed part-time member of the Armed Detective Agency and a high schooler, as well as Junichiro's younger sister. Having a brother complex, Naomi is a clingy, loving girl who cares so much about her older brother, given that she only lives with him. Despite not having an ability like Junichiro, Naomi is dedicated to work at the Agency with her intelligence and quick-thinking skills to compensate it.
Former Members[]
Katai Tayama - The lazy former member of the Armed Detective Agency who was invited to join the organization by his best friend Kunikida. Much to the latter's annoyance, Katai is an anxious shut-in who tends to stay in his room with his futon for a long period of time. Despite being a former member, Katai provides support for the Agency, especially after being framed as terrorists by the Decay of the Angel. With his information-breaking skills, he has the ability to manipulate electrical signal, titled "Futon".
