Arthur Calgary is the main protagonist of Agatha Christe's 1958 novel, Ordeal by Innocence.

In the 1984 film adaptation, he was the late portrayed by Donald Sutherland. In Agatha Christie's Marple which adapted the novel in 2007, he was portrayed by Julian Rhind-Tutt. In the 2018 BBC miniseries adaptation, he was portrayed by Luke Treadaway.

Biography[]

Some time before the start of the story, Arthur gave a ride to a certain guy (who was Jacko Argyle). Then Arthur was hit by a truck and suffered amnesia. Later, he went on an expedition to Antarctica and did not have the opportunity to find out the latest news. When he returned, he found out that the guy he was giving a ride to (that is, Jacko) was arrested for the murder of his adoptive mother and died in prison. Arthur goes to Jacko’s family and reports that he was the person who gave Jacko a lift then, believing that this would put an end to this story. But he doesn’t know that for Jacko’s family this story is ALREADY over, and Jacko’s family members, to put it mildly, are not happy to hear what he said.

Now, given that Jacko did not commit the murder (at least with his own hands), a re-investigation will begin (which means that all family members will again be suspects (and perhaps suspect each other, and before that everyone was inclined to consider the culprit Jacko, since for them it was a convenient way not to suspect each other)). And the re-investigation really begins. The difficulty also lies in the fact that after so much time it will be difficult to remember for certain who was where and who did what.

Besides, most family members tend to forget that story. In particular, the husband of the murdered woman is ready to remarry, and now it turns out that he had a motive. In addition, one of the adopted daughters of that murdered woman named Tina meets with a young doctor and he suspects her of murder. Another adopted daughter, Mary, believes that she has nothing to do here. But her husband Philip decides to look into what happened (ironically, he is the only member of the family who wants to look into it). However, he is soon killed.

Arriving Arthur Calgary, who, feeling guilty for bringing misfortune to the life of this family, wanted to bring peace to the life of this family, all this time also tried to understand what had happened, explains that Jacko really was a murderer, but he did not kill his adoptive mother with his own hands, and by the hands of the housekeeper Kirsten, but by chance he could not provide himself with an alibi.

It was also discovered that he had a wife (and he told the housekeeper that he loved only her, so she betrayed him). When Arthur nevertheless confirmed Jacko's alibi, Kirsten realized that a new investigation would reveal her involvement in the murder. In addition, Philip began his own investigation, so she killed him. Kirsten runs away. After this, Arthur says that now Tina can marry her fiancé. But Tina refuses, since he did not believe in her innocence and expresses a desire to marry Arthur himself.

Personality[]

Arthur can be called a very conscientious person. Having learned that the man he gave a lift to died in prison (which would not have happened if he had confirmed his alibi), he tells his family that Jaco did not kill his mother (personally, at least). Realizing that he only made it worse (after all, for the rest of the family, Jaco was a murderer and now they will suspect each other), he decides to conduct his own investigation and identifies the perpetrator of the murder (Kirsten), who by that time had committed another murder. That is why, deep down, the Jaco family understands Arthur. Tina even wants to marry him (after all, her previous fiancé did not believe in her innocence and did not want to hear otherwise, and Arthur, despite everything, knew how to do better).
