Arthur "Art" Leywin (previously named Grey) is the main protagonist of the 2017 fantasy web novel series The Beginning After The End and its 2018 manhwa & 2025 anime television series adaptations of the same name.
Formerly a monarch known by the name of King Grey, he was reborn into a new world, on the continent of Dicathen, as the son of Alice Leywin and Reynolds Leywin.
Arthur Leywin is voiced by Natsumi Fujiwara and King Grey is voiced by Makoto Furukawa (who also voiced Saitama in One Punch Man and Achilles in Fate) in Japanese and Christopher Wehkamp (who also voiced Isao Shinomiya from Kaiju No. 8 and Ryuji Ikeda from MF Ghost) as King Grey and Amber May (who also voiced Dehya from Genshin Impact) as Arthur in English.
Appearance[]
King Grey[]
Although his appearances in his memories from the past appeared unclear, Arthur as King Grey, was a great-looking man with short brown hair. His face was never really shown until in later flashbacks.
Arthur Leywin[]
Now reborn as Arthur Leywin, as a toddler, he had large blue eyes and brown hair. Over the years, he grew into a fine-looking young man. At school, he wears a tight black outfit with golden accents and cords. As he grew into an adult again, he wears a sophisticated white shirt and dark trousers. Over his shoulders, he dons a grand, black cloak adorned with luxurious white fur trim and detailed gold embroidery along the edges.
Realmheart-Enhancement[]
By enhancing himself with Realmheart, the skin of his body is turned into a grey color. He wore a form-fitting black suit of armor that highlights his muscular build, complemented by silver armor pieces on his arms and legs. His outfit is accented with a flowing red cape that billows dramatically behind him. His arms are enveloped in golden runes maks algon with dark energy. As a half-asura, Arthur was in a sleek, black outfit adorned with gold accents with a green cape draped over his shoulders. He wielded a short, curved dagger in combat.
"Note"[]
Adopting the identity of Note, Arthur takes on a mysterious appearance. An outfit is predominantly dark, comprised of a loose, navy-blue hooded jacket. Beneath is a off-white shirt. Downward, he wears a pair of black pants with paired with fingerless gloves at both of his hands. He prominently wears a white mouthless mask with a sharp, blue streak running vertically over the right eye.
Disciplinary Committee[]
His attire as a Disciplinary Committee features a sleek black uniform, accented with golden linings. The top of the outfit is a fitted military-style jacket. It also features a high collar with gold piping, and two long golden cord drapes. The gold stripes run down the sides. A belt with metallic buckles is tied around his torso. His boots are tall, black extended just below the knees.

Early Years[]
From a young age in his new life, Arthur exhibits a maturity and strategic understanding that surpasses his peers, a result of his previous life’s memories and experiences. His logical maturity allows him to see the broader implications of events around him, making him a wise and insightful individual. As a child, Arthur enjoyed his moments as a toddler for a second time, admiring his own cuteness as a newborn as he looked his new self in the mirror in front of his parents and even being excited to attract young ladies in his later years. Due to being a baby with the mind of a grown man, Arthur was readily excited to grab some books about magic in his parent's house. He began to observe the dialects in it and the system of how magic is used. Almost right away, a toddler Arthur was capable of concentrating his mind to form a key center through meditation before he was interrupted by his mother. Arthur was initially impressed by his father's training to learn magic, but was soon disappointed when his father's potential magic failed to reached his expectation. When being forced by his mother to take a nap, Arthur takes advantage of his adorable appearance as a toddler to change his mother's mind. At any opportunity for his leisure, Arthur would practice meditation. Eventually, Arthur was able to form a mana core, which abruptly blew his parents' house, but left him intact to his parent's shock. Arthur was so captivated by his own accomplishment that took a few seconds before he realized that his meditation session blew a great section of his house. Despite his relatively young age, he was capable of catching Adam Krensh, a member of his father's party, off guard with the techniques he acquired in his past life. This skill left everyone, including his parents shocked as they know they did not teach him such techniques, to which Arthur try to convince them that he did so by reading books and observing his father.
Arthur's thirst of revenge for his family.
When Arthur, his parents, and the Twin Horns Party were surrounded by the Great Mountains Bandit Leader and his men, Arthur was confident in his skills and proposed to assist his father's friends to fight the bandits, despite Arthur's small size and petite size. Regardless, Arthur was brave and continues to impress others with skills that no ordinary child can achieve by deflecting the bandits' projectiles and even being able to push his power seconds before getting hit by a giant water attack. After being separated from his family and his father's friends, Arthur was initially startled by the voice of someone who was nowhere to be found. Despite having the mindset of an adult, Arthur was greatly frightened by who would be later revealed to be Sylvia, a gigantic individual in a dark armor. Knowing that his mother was pregnant, he cannot help but worry about them, until Sylvia reassured the boy that they are fine elsewhere by using his psychic abilities. He breaks down emotionally as he is left alone once again when Sylvia's life came to an end but saved him and finds himself outside again. During his time with Sylvia, Arthur finally had his sense of revenge toward the criminals who ambushed them rise inside him but gets adviced by Sylvia to not let his heart driven by hatred as it will only bring harm to himself and follow the wrong path. Neverthless, after leaving Sylvia, Arthur was still driven to be lethal enough to ambush a group of slavers who captured an elf child. Driven by a strong sense of justice, he hunts them at night and as one of them begs Art to wait, the boy answers him that wouldn't the child they captured have also begged to wait before finished him off.

Upon bringing back Tessia home, to the Kingdom of Elenoir, Arthur remains respectful, now aware that Tessia belongs to the monarchs of a society. Art had initially the decision to leave the kingdom soon after explaining what happened to Tessia to her family, disappointing Tessia for his quick decision to leave. Arthur is challenged by Tessia's grandfather, Virion Eralith, the former king of Elenoir, to many duels in swordsplay, managing to impress him with his unusual prowess to fight him on pair, so much that it the man was willing to make him his successor.
Teenage Years[]
However, his spiritual maturity lags due to the "shell" he had around his emotions in his past life, causing him to struggle with personal relationships and emotional responses. Arthur has a sense justice that is in play when his loved ones are threatened. His emotional struggles often lead to explosive and excessive reactions, highlighting a vulnerability in his otherwise mature demeanor. Ultimately, Arthur’s return to Dicathen marks his transformation from a cold, detached individual into a more empathetic and clear-headed leader. The death of Sylvie nearly drove him to madness and detachment, along with his failure to triump, mirroring his past life. Nevertheless, with the help of Regis and Caera, he manages to retain his empathy and gradually overcomes his grudge for the Alacryans, shifting his anger towards the true instigators of conflict, Agrona Vritra and Kezess Indrath.

Pre Reincarnation[]
From his previous life, Arthur lived as a King by the name Grey in a dystopian earth with advanced technology called Etharia. Originally, he was an orphan living in the orphanage alongside with his childhood friends, Nico Sever and Cecilia under Headmaster Wilbeck, who is in charge at the time. from that time, Nico and Grey resort to criminal activities - mainly burglary to the rich - to help the oprhanage until they met Cecilia who cannot control her Ki but was saved by Grey and the three began their friendship from their previous era.
Grey's mind was consumed with revenge and desire power following the death of who he considered his mother in the oprhanage, chose to enroll in the cadet academy despite the risks he's taking when he wanted to become stronger. Grey's relationship with Nico and Cecilia has strained since he no longer meets them even to the point where he gave up his feelings for Cecilia for the sake of his best friend, Nico.
Prior to months before becoming the new king, Nico and Grey's friendship broken down due to Cecilia being kidnapped by higher organization and the two fought from their incident. Nico later went to Grey after months of not contacting, revealed that he was held captive telling him that they used Cecilia even to the point of Vera using Grey for both her goals and the organization she belonged to. He later became King after the events of the friendship with his former best friend Nico and live out his life to eschewed long term achievements while he hardened his heart until his death before.
Post Reincarnation[]
He reincarnated under the name of Arthur Leywin after he considered the possibility of being assassinated and later chose to live as a new life In the new world called Dicathen.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Master Swordsman: Even as King Grey in his past life, Arthur had mastered the art of swordsmanship, taking down many opponents until he reached old age, which worsened his physical prowesses to fight like he was in his prime.
- Mirage Walk: During his training arc in Ephotheus, he mastered to hide his mana prescence by balancing the mana core through his mana channels that made him become invisible to both humans and animals who can sense their mana fluctuations senses.
- Quadra-Elemental: Arthur can simultaneously use four elements, Earth, Water, Fire and Wind attacks.
Trivia[]
- The anime, manga, and anime series Mushoku Tensei is the primary inspiration for the series, including how the start of Arthur's life is extremely similar to its series protagonist Rudeus Greyrat, such as reincarnating into a happy farmer family in a fantasy world, both damaging their families's house at a young age out of their curiosity for magic, getting separated from his family because of an event.
- His name as Arthur was named after their great-grandfather, when the Leywin House was once powerful Family Clan.
