Arval is the tritagonist of Nintendo's 2022 tactical hack-and-slash video game Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, the second installment within the Fódlan Saga of the Fire Emblem franchise.

They are a mysterious being that can only be seen and heard in the mind of the mercenary, Shez, who also has the ability to gain their mysterious power. Their main objective is to aid Shez in defeating the Ashen Demon Byleth Eisner, often giving them advice and encouraging them whenever they feel down.

However, they are later revealed to be the creation of a man named Epimenides, one of the leaders of Those Who Slither in the Dark, who wanted to kill the Progenitor God Sothis, using Arval to carry his soul and consciousness to complete his goals.

He is voiced by Mutsumi Tamura in Japanese and Melissa Hutchison in English.

Synopsis[]

A mysterious being that appeared solely in their dreams, Arval was responsible for saving Shez before the Ashen Demon could kill them and speaks to them as if residing purely within their head. While they seem to understand how their powers work, along with various aspects of society, they lack any sort of memory of any events prior to them meeting Shez.

Personality[]

Like Sothis, Arval lacks any and all memories of their past prior to meeting and rescuing Shez. Though they do possess some vague impressions of feelings towards others they've known in the past or feel they are connected to.

Arval has a sassy personality, constantly quipping sarcastically in response to almost anything, with a particularly sharp tongue toward authority figures. They do have a very prevalent soft spot for Shez though despite teasing them most of the time. While not overly egotistical, Arval is quite proud of their abilities and tends to flaunt them to Shez, often reminding them they're only still alive because of Arval's powers.

Arval has a very strategic mind and sometimes comes up with plans which they willingly choose to lend to Shez when they're asked for ideas in the story.

Arval for the longest time didn't quite know why or how they came into being in the first place, but after seeing Shez's defeat at the hands of Byleth in the prologue, they became very fixated on the idea that defeating the Ashen Demon has to be their "destiny". Arval firmly believes in "fate" or "destiny", and that it's theirs and Shez's destiny to defeat Byleth, the Ashen Demon. Whenever Shez advocates or suggests forgoing their rivalry with Byleth in favor of befriending them, reasoning that their faction would be unstoppable with them by their side and Jeralt's Mercenaries in their corner, Arval shoots it down almost immediately, but by their own admission, they don't really understand why.
