~ Arven to Koraidon/Miraidon. |
Avern is one of the four deuteragonists (alongside Penny, Nemona, and Miriadon/Koraidon) in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. He appears as the deuteragonist in the "Path of Legends" story arc and the tritagonist of the "The Way Home" arc.
Avern is a upperclassman at the Naranja Academy\Uva Academy. He is known for making healthy recipes for making Pokémon better. He is also the son of Professor Sada (Scarlet) or Professor Turo (Violet).
Personality[]
Arven is initially presented as a rather stand-offish individual who is quick to getting annoyed by others and is prone to resorting to picking fights with others. He gets especially angered whenever the subject of his parents is brought up and held a long grudge towards the Koraidon/Miraidon he has to look after, to the point he was quick to give it away to the player character after just meeting him. It is implied that Arven doesn't have many if any friends at school and tends to slack with his studies.
By his own admission, Arven is untalented when it comes to Pokémon battling and lacks self-confidence in himself.
It is later revealed that Arven's irritable attitude and overall lack of social skills comes from his troubled childhood having been all but abandoned by both of his parents, one of which abandoned the family when he was very young while the other had become so obsessed with their scientific research that they became cold and neglectful towards him. Arven stated that he'd much rather have an ordinary mother/father who gave him any attention and affection, rather than a world-famous parent who's never around.
Arven's only real friend is his Mabosstiff partner Pokémon who served as his only form of companionship for most of his life. Over the course of the "Path of Legends" story arc Arven is shown to be extremely close to Mabosstiff, with all of his actions throughout the Path of Legends revolving around saving Mabosstiff's life, and he broke down crying when he saw Mabosstiff's recovery. Arven also grew to trust and befriend the player character throughout the Path of Legends after seeing the player's commitment in helping save Mabosstiff. Arven also learned to tolerate Koraidon/Miraidon, though he still gets annoyed whenever Koraidon/Miraidon eats one of his sandwiches in one bite. After Mabosstiff's recovery Arven also learned to be more confident in himself and his battling skills.
During The Way Home story arc Arven and the player meet up with Penny and Nemona to travel to the core of Area Zero to confront his mother/father over their neglect. Initially Arven's interactions with Penny and Nemona consisted of him bickering with the two and passive-aggressively making snark remarks about them. As the group made it deeper and deeper into the crater Arven also began to warm up to the two, the constant bickering with the group turned into honest heartfelt conversations about everyone's parental problems as Penny and Nemona both also showed legitimate care towards him beyond him just being Sada/Turo's son.
Upon reaching the Zero Lab and seeing the AI Sada/Turo, Arven was quick to figure out that his mother/father was dead and was troubled with seeing an android with the appearance of his absent/dead parent coldly talk to them only to be corrupted by the Paradise Protection Protocol.
After the Guardian of Paradise's defeat, AI Sada/ AI Turo recovered control of itself and assured Arven that the real professor did love him even if they didn't' show it much. Arven teared up when he saw the AI Sada/ AI Turo disappear into the time machine, despite knowing that it was a fake replica as it was the last memory of his last remaining parent.
Once the Area Zero crisis was solved, Arven initially was still struggling to come to terms with the death of his mother/father, but also learned to appreciate his new friends and proclaimed that he would no longer be an irritated self-pitying person.
Background[]
Arven is the son of Sada and Turo. Depending on which version of the game, one of Arven's parents (Sada in Violet, Turo in Scarlet) left their husband/wife (Turo in Violet, Sada in Scarlet) due to their increasing obsession with their research into the Paradox Pokémon and the Area Zero of Paldea.
Sada/Turo remained as Arven's only parent. However they were neglectful towards him as they became increasingly absorbed into their work, leaving Arven to grow up largely alone without either parent and a Maschiff Pokémon as his only real friend. At some point Sada/Turo was able to bring two specimens of Koraidon/Miraidon into the present day via a time machine they had developed, and one of the specimens was left under Arven's care. Arven was not fond of Koraidon/Miraidon, who he viewed as a reminder of his parent's neglect towards him. 4 years ago, Arven's communication with Sada/Turo abruptly ended entirely.
One day Arven decided to venture into the Great Crater of Paldea intending to confront his parents regarding their obsession with their work, but on the way to the laboratory his Maschiff, now a Mabosstiff, was attacked by a Paradox Pokémon and was gravely injured. Arven attempted every conventional method of healing Mabosstiff's injures but to no avail, Mabbosstiff's injures also severely affected his health, leaving Mabosstiff in a somewhat vegetative state barely capable of moving or even keeping its eyes open.
Arven, desperate to save his Mabosstiff's life made his own research into other means of healing Mabosstiff's injuries and came across the Scarlet/Violet book among piles of research books at his parent's laboratory at the Poco Lighthouse. The book described mysterious Pokémon from other time eras that initially inspired Sada/Turo's research into time travel, but more importantly for his purposes it detailed very powerful medicinal herbs known as "Herba Mystica".
The Herba Mystica were described in the book as having incredible curative and health improvement capabilities, this gave Arven the idea to find Herba Mysticas to feed Mabosstiff, however the book also detailed that Herba Mystica are commonly guarded by Titan Pokémon; Pokémon that due to excessive consumption of Herba Mystica became massive in size and power. Arven, aware of his overall lack of talent as a Pokémon trainer, had no chance of taking down the Titans and get the Herba Mystica.
Naranja Academy\Uva Academy[]
Shortly before the start of the year's school a territorial fight broke between the two Koraidon/Miraidon where the one Arven typically looked after was injured badly and fled the crater. Koraidon/Miraidon was found by the player character at a beach near the Poco Lighthouse were Arven lives Soon the player, Koraidon/Miraidon, and Nemona all stumbled into Arven trying to get into the Lighthouse Laboratory.
Arven immediately scolded Koraidon/Miraidon for fleeing previously, much to the confusion of the Player and Nemona over Arven's knowledge of the unusual Pokémon. Arven noted that Koraidon/Miraidon was growing fond of the player and suggested the Player to keep them after losing a battle to the Player. Arven was very much relieved to get someone else to take care of them.
Later the Player ran into Arven again at the school cafeteria where Arven mentioned the Herba Mystica and his desire to get them, though he did not mention anything about Mabosstiff, instead claiming that he's a talented chef and wanted to make special recipes, namely sandwiches, with the Herba Mystica. But he also mentioned the existence of Titan Pokémon and his lack of talent at battling, making the Titans a considerable obstacle.
Path of Legends[]
A few months into the school year the Academy's Treasure Hunt quest initiated where students are encouraged to travel Paldea on their own with no determined goal to "find their own personal treasure" which were up to each individual student to determine what their treasure should be. Arven's Treasure Hunt of choice was the Herba Mystica. He came up with the idea of inviting the player on his quest since the Player is a considerably stronger trainer, so the two could stand a better chance at fighting the Titans. Arven, Nemona, and a mysterious girl named "Cassiopeia" all pressured the Player into following their respective Treasure Hunts of choice they themselves wanted to follow, with the player deciding to follow all three quests at once including Arven's quest for Herba Mystica.
Soon enough the player encountered the first Titan Pokémon (canonically that being Klawf the Stony Titan, but the Player is allowed to fight them in any order). Initially the Titan didn't seem that much stronger than normal despite its gigantic size, that is until the Titan fled to its hideout to eat Herba Mystica Suddenly the Titan obtained a massive burst of power. Arven arrived just in time and teamed up with the player to fight the Titan 2 vs 1.
Once the Titan was defeated, the two ventured into the cave it was guarding where they indeed found Herba Mystica. Arven wasted no time and used the Herba Mystica to make specialized sandwiches for the Player and himself. Suddenly Koraidon/Miraidon appeared and asked the Player to give it their sandwich. Arven was mad at Koraidon/Miraidon, but then noticed the Herba Mystica quickly restored some of Koraidon/Miraidon's strength and made it develop an improved form of transportation. Now having witnessed that Herba Mystica do indeed work, Arven waited for the Player to leave so he could feed Mabosstiff some of the leftover Herba Mystica.
When the Player and Arven defeated the second Titan, Koraidon/Miraidon was about to eat Arven's sandwich when Arven angrily yelled at it to stop. Arven apologized for snapping and was forced to admit the true reason for his quest to get Herba Mystica and brought out Mabosstiff and explained the entire situation to the player. Both the player and Koraidon/Miraidon became committed to help Arven get the rest of the Herba Mystica and save Mabosstiff.
The more Herba Mystica were obtained by the duo, both Koraidon/Miraidon and Mabosstiff were noted to be improving in health considerably. Once all 5 Titans were defeated and Arven obtained the last Herba Mystica, the two hoped this would be enough for Mabosstiff to fully recover; initially it seemed to not be enough, but quickly Mabosstiff stood up fully and started picking up its Poké Ball like it used to, signaling that it indeed was back to full health. Arven broke down crying in relief at the sight of Mabosstiff being okay and thanked the player for all their helped, and also admitted to somewhat mellowing down at Koraidon/Miraidon after it too was instrumental in Mabosstiff's recovery.
Suddenly the two were interrupted by a phone call from Professor Sada / Turo who notified that Koraidon had also fully recovered from its previous injures, and now requested both the player and Arven to meet up at her/his laboratory at the lighthouse.
Final test[]
The two made it to the lab where Arven proceeded to rant about Sada/Turo being a terrible parent and explained his backstory of growing alone at the lighthouse. The computer at the laboratory suddenly turned on to a video call from Professor Sada / Turo who explained that she/he required the player to travel to the Zero Laboratory at the very bottom of Area Zero of Paldea so they can deliver her/him the Scarlet/Violet book.
Arven was not happy about returning to Area Zero since that's where Mabosstiff was injured in the first place, but also knew that the player would go there and did not want them to venture into the crater alone, so Arven suggested the Player to face him in a battle to determine if Arven is ready to go back into Area Zero, Arven battled using all the Pokémon he caught during their quest for Herba Mystica and Mabosstiff as his ultimate ace. Arven lost the battle but was satisfied seeing that Mabosstiff is fully capable of Battling again and was now more confident in his talents as a Trainer. Still, Arven suggested they should get more allies before going into Area Zero to make the trip easier. The player suggested they invite Penny and Nemona.
The Way Home[]
Once the Player obtained the Champion Trainer title and solved the conflict with Team Star, the Player and Arven told Nemona and Penny of their plan to venture into Area Zero at Professor Sada / Turo's request. Area Zero is strictly off-limits for students but Nemona and Penny both accepted, with Nemona wanting to face the powerful Pokémon that live at Area Zero, and Penny feeling she needed to repay the Player for them saving Team Star before.
The four students made it to Area Zero by flying on Koraidon/Miraidon's back to make it to the crater. Immediately upon entering Area Zero, Koraidon/Miraidon became scared and refused to leave its Poké Ball to the confusion of the group. Professor Sada / Turo explained the four children that to make it to the Zero Lab at the very bottom, they needed to reach four research stations along the way and deactivate the security locks in each. It did not take long for the group to be attacked by Paradox Pokémon; Arven noted that a Paradox Pokémon was most likely what attacked Mabosstiff last time he made it to Area Zero.
Professor Sada/ Turo explained over the phone that Paradox Pokémon came from the distant past/future via the time machine that they developed. As the group ventured further into the crater, they took the time to get to know each other, with Arven frequently bickering with Nemona and Penny but also slowly opening more over his childhood growing up alone due to Sada / Turo never being around spending all their time at the Zero Lab. They also deduced that Koraidon/Miraidon is also a Paradox Pokémon.
The group also noted something suspicious was going on with Sada / Turo as they only ever contacted them via phone calls, never appearing in person, and the way they talked over the phone was strangely cold and robotic, something that was strange to even Arven. When the group found the fourth research station it was completely destroyed. Sada / Turo explained that a territorial battle took place between the two Koraidon/Miraidon years ago that wrecked the lab.
Eventually the group reached the Zero Lab, only to be attacked by a mass horde of Paradox Pokémon and the hostile Koraidon/Miraidon that injured the one owned by the Player and previously Arven. Arven, Nemona, and Penny all held back the Paradox Pokémon allowing the player to rush into the laboratory but not before Arven gave them the Scarlet/Violet Book. Inside the laboratory the player found "Sada / Turo", who in reality was an android replica based after the original professor and controlled by a highly advanced AI that is only possible by the power of Tera Crystals found at Area Zero. AI Sada / AI Turo explained the player that the real Sada /Turo had been dead for four years, and that the AI wanted to shut down the time machine as it posed a threat to all of Paldea if Paradox Pokémon ever escaped Area Zero. However, the android required the Scarlet/Violet Book which was the access key to turn off the machine, and the reason it needed the Player and their friends was because it could not leave the laboratory due to being reliant on Tera Crystals.
The Player and AI Sada / AI Turo made it to the core of the machine to turn it off, but first the player had to defeat the android in a Pokémon Battle because the android is programmed to defend the time machine so its protocols would override its sentience the moment the Scarlet/Violet book is inserted into the control terminal. The player defeated the android while Arven, Nemona, and Penny made it to the heart of the machine too. Arven immediately pointed out AI Sada / AI Turo was an impostor, and the android told Arven that his true parent is already dead; Arven admitted that he suspected this was the case when the professor abruptly stopped contacting him 4 years ago.
The meeting was cut short when the Paradise Protection Protocol was activated, a last-ditch security protocol developed by the real Professor Sada / Turo that not even the android replica was aware of; the Paradise Protection Protocol forcibly took control of AI Sada / AI Turo and corrupted them with Terastal energy, then it locked down any Poké Ball aren't owned by the Professor's ID, and sent the hostile Koraidon/Miraidon to attack the intruders. Luckily, the Player's Koraidon/Miraidon was originally owned by the professor, so it was able to fight the rampaging hostile one. Arven cheered and rooted the Player Koraidon/Miraidon as it battled its years long rival. This time, thanks to the Herba Mystica that Arven and the Player collected, and the support from the four friends, Koraidon/Miraidon came out triumphant over the hostile one.
AI Sada / AI Turo congratulated the party on their victory, but also concluded that the only way to permanently shut down the time machine for good was if they transported themselves to the distant past/distant future, thus leaving nothing left to protect the time machine. Before sending itself into the time machine, AI Sada / AI Turo apologized to Arven for not telling him about his mother/father's fate sooner, and assured Arven that the real Sada/Turo did love him for real despite the neglect. Arven teared up as he saw the robotic android of his lost mother/father disappear forever into the time portal before the time machine finally was shut down.
The four students left Area Zero and were on their way back to the Academy to tell Director Clavell what happened, but rather than cheering over them saving Paldea the group was upset and shocked at the events and Arven was still coming to terms with the fact that his mother/father had been dead for 4 years. Nemona suggested to have a picnic to cheer up the group and thanks Koraidon/Miraidon for saving them back at the lab. Arven was briefly annoyed by the idea but was encouraged by Koraidon/Miraidon to hang out with his new friends.
Post Game[]
Shortly after the incident at the Zero Lab, Director Clavell called Arven and his friends to his office to discuss the events and give his condolences to Arven over the death of his mother/father. Arven declared that after all he experienced this year, he will no longer put himself down constantly and will become a better person, to which Clavell pointed out Arven still needed to catch up on his studies if he wants to graduate. Arven then participated on the Academy Ace Tournament where he was paired against the player on the first round.
Arven can then be found at the school library looking at more copies of the Scarlet/Violet book; he reflected over how the stories written on that book where the inspiration behind Sada/Turo's dream of discovering Paradox Pokémon and indirectly caused all the troubles in his life, but he also pointed out that the existence Paradox Pokémon was not supposed to be known to the world until Sada/Turo's time machine began drawing them into the present, which does not add up at all with the account that the book somehow had records of them during the professor's childhood. He was confused by this contradiction but decided not to think too much about it.
