Hero Overview

It's pi-cause... It's because I always want to be with you...
~ Pikachu's only lines in Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!.

Ash’s Pikachu is the deuteragonist of Pokémon: the Series, and the titular main protagonist of the Pikachu Shorts series.

Pikachu is Ash's first Pokémon and signature traveling partner. Team Rockets always tries to steal Pikachu but failed countlessly and sending them flying with Thunderbolt.

He is voiced by Ikue Ōtani in the original Japanese version, who also does a character of the same name in the titular franchise, Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya in Detective Conan, Zatch Bell in Konjiki no Gash Bell and Konohamaru Sarutobi in Naruto. In the English dub, he is also voiced by Ikue Ōtani; and also by the late Rachael Lillis in a few episodes of Season 1, and Kate Bristol during his speaking line in Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!

Appearance[]

Pikachu is a short, chubby rodent Pokémon. He is covered in yellow fur with two horizontal brown stripes on its back. He has a small mouth, long, pointed ears with black tips, and brown eyes. Each cheek is a red circle that contains a pouch for electricity storage. He has short forearms with five fingers on each paw, and his feet each have three toes. At the base of his lightning bolt-shaped tail is a patch of brown fur. A female will have a V-shaped notch at the end of its tail, which looks like the top of a heart. He is classified as a quadruped, but he has been known to stand and walk on his hind legs.

When Gigantamax, Pikachu became a giant. He has a long lightning tail.

Personality[]

Pikachu is very ambitious, because he hates being defeated. At the beginning of the series, he was easily aggravated and hesitant to warm up to Ash. He is also sensitive because he understood Piplup’s dealings and cried.

Biography[]

Pikachu started out as a Pichu raised by a Kangaskhan. When he evolved into a Pikachu, he was kept in a Poké Ball inside Professor Oak’s laboratory until he found a trainer.

Ash got a Pikachu from Professor Oak as his starter Pokémon when the other three were already taken. At first Pikachu didn't get along with his Trainer, but he gradually warmed up to him and they have been great friends ever since. Together, they go on many adventures with many friends. Pikachu hates being inside his Pokéball and prefers to be out in the open.

A criminal organization named Team Rocket consisting of Jessie, James and the Scratch Cat Pokémon Meowth are constantly trying to steal him in almost every episode for years, as they were impressed by his skills in their first encounter with him and Ash. However, Team Rocket always fails and Pikachu often sends them "blasting off again" with a Thunderbolt.

Pikachu always destroyed Ash's female companions' bicycles by his thunderbolt (which was an accident) such as Misty (although it was soon repaired), May and Dawn.

When reaching the Hoenn Region, Pikachu became sick due to Team Rocket's electromagnet. It is known as the Symptoms of Electrical Discharge by Professor Birch. Professor Birch intend to help Ash to cure of his illness. Pikachu's unwanted electricity was soon extracted by Team Rocket to fully cure him.

Pikachu appears in every episode in the main series along with Ash.

This Pikachu Ash owned is confirmed to be a male due to the gender different that female a Pikachu had heart-shaped tail.

Pikachu is the first Pokémon to defeat a mega evolved Pokémon in the anime without mega evolving. It defeated Korrina's Mega Lucario with a Thunderbolt.

In Pokémon Journeys: The Series episode "The Climb to Be the Very Best!", it’s confirmed Pikachu became a Gigantamax when absorbing the Gigantamax energy.

Trivia[]

  • Former director and storyboard artist Masamitsu Hidaka has stated that Ash and Pikachu will be the main characters in every generation of the Pokémon anime. This remained true until the announcement of To Be A Pokémon Master which marks the final chapter of Ash and Pikachu as the main characters, as well as Pokémon Horizons, which Liko and Roy are the main protagonists instead.
    • He also stated that Ash will continue collecting badges which also remained true until Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon which were replaced with trials. Also, in Pokémon Journeys, Ash participates in a worldwide tournament known as the World Coronation Series rather than collecting badges despite that there are gyms in that Galar region.
    • In spite of their departure, the director claims that Ash and Pikachu will return in the nearby future as it says their department will be temporarily (whether they reprises their roles).
