Ash Phoenix is the deuteragonist of the sequel anime series Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture. Alongside his "younger brother", Roze, Ash are nicknamed the Nameless Mercenaries with the goal to rescue Princess Sakura Haruyanagininomiya, of the Empress of Neo Britannia Empire, the twin double of Roze unbeknownst to Ash.

He is voiced by Makoto Furukawa and by Cory Yee in English.

Appearance[]

Ash is an average-height young man with light brown hair with a streak of blue and a focused expression. His outfit is a form-fitting navy blue suit with red accents, featuring high-tech armor on his forearms and shins. The suit has multiple straps and buckles, giving it a secure and functional look. He also carries a small pouch on his belt, adding to his practical and ready-for-action style.

Personality[]

Ash typically carries a stern and serious demeanor, whether it is in his free time or on the battlefield. Regardless, he is very loyal to Roze, deeming him as his younger "brother" and what is the most important to him in the world. However not just to Roze, Ash is a compassionate man who cares for others, not hesitating to help those in need such as defending a woman who was being attacked by a worker at a gas station. However, his present self was revealed to be another under Roze's Geass power, brainwashing him to deem Roze as the most important person to him throughout their journey.

Prior to joining Roze's side, Ash's demeanor remains unclear but he appeared affected by the death of Jugo Sumeragi, the father of Roze. As a result, Ash claimed that he was the killer of Jugo, believing that he was responsible and at fault, prompting Roze to avenge his father to plan kill Ash in the future, unaware to Ash.

Ash's personality changes drastically when he fell in love for a girl working as a maid, who is in fact Roze or Sakuya without her disguise, under the alias of Raspberry. Roze is startled by Ash's sudden change whenever she interacts with Ash, now cheerful and more talkative, as well as being caught off guard when her partner revealed that he was in love, without mentioning who.

He has a strong sense of honour, as he vowed to Jugo Sumeragi that he would protect his daughter, Sakuya; he initially tried to save him too during the prison break, but Jugo had to be the distraction to allow Ash's escape, thereby reinforcing the young man's desire to save Sakuya. As Sakuya was unaware of his oath, she mistook him as yet another Neo-Britannian, thus brainwashed him into service; however, when Christoph Scissorman's Geass-canceller broke the deception, Ash had to relive the memory of his brother's death and learn that his "brother' Roze had been using him. Ash was enraged, contemplated killing Sakuya, but ultimately his honour was stronger, as he killed Christoph to save her; although, despite being willing to finish their revolution, Ash expressed contempt at her and said that he may yet kill her when they are done, and would at the very least part ways forever - albeit a lot of his rage was due to grief, so he may yet hold some sentiment for Sakuya, even despite her exploitation of him.

Once the Geass was broken, it was revealed that Ash's true personality is almost identical to the one under brainwashing, with the change merely being a memory alteration. As such, it can be inferred that he is truly kind and compassionate; and perhaps due to his past as a resident of an orphanage, he habitually adopted any stray animal that he found, and worked to ensure that they were well-fed and cared for, even if with the challenge of the confines of a recreation vehicle, near-constantly on the move - therefore, his history as an orphan made him unwilling to abandon the strays to their lone fates.

As a child in the orphanage, Ash was always high spirited and kind, often working hard to ensure the other children didn't succumb to despair; while he was compassionate to all of them, he was especially protective of his brother, Nichol. When Norland adopted them, this attachment was used to enforce Ash's obedience, as he was forced to abandon his morality by becoming Norland's assassin, with the threat of his brother's death if he failed. Upon one mission, he came face-to-face with a girl who was one of his fellow orphans, which broke him out of his typically emotionless trance during kills; uncertain on what to do, Nichol murdered the girl, as he had followed his brother to see his work, and wanted to spare his older sibling from the guilt of killing one of their own.

Due to the assassination being improperly complete, Ash was stood along with Norland's other "children," and Knights, awaiting punishment. Nichol pleaded with their adopted father to forgive Ash, as it was his fault that the mission went awry; indifferently accepting this, Norland murdered Nichol with two swords, ignoring how it would also cost him his greatest assassin. His brother's death broke Ash, with the immediate result being him attempting to kill Norland, before he was held down by other Knights. For his "insubordination," Ash was sent to prison. In the prison, he fell into a depressed state, and was attempting passive suicide through voluntary starvation; however, another prisoner in a nearby cell was Jugo Sumeragi, whose positive outlook, charisma, and consideration convinced Ash to continue living, even if his chosen reason was vengeance.

Despite his resentment at Sakuya for using him and deceiving him, Ash resumed their usual cohesion as a team in the combined Knightmare Frames; his anger gradually subsided, at least at her, since he was pragmatically devoted to killing Norland to save the world, but also avenge his brother, Nichol. Even though the false siblings of Ash and Sakuya had a sour falling out, they worked in synchronicity with Sakuya's tactics and Ash's skills allowing them to reach the advantage against Norland.

Once Norland was defeated - stabbed by two Knightmare swords akin to how Nichol was executed - Ash seemed to feel like his purpose was complete, along with the final act of him sacrificing himself to save Sakuya, thus keeping his oath to the late Jugo. Another motivation appeared to be him still holding sentiment and attachment to her, even though she had brainwashed him into servitude that he would have volunteered anyway if given the chance; his time with her made him genuinely fond of her, therefore he was content to die if would ensure her survival.
