Ashen One is the main protagonist of From Software's 2016 critically acclaimed Dark Souls III and it's two additional expansions Ashes of Ariandel and Ringed City, the final installment in the Dark Soul's franchise.

He is an unkindled, whose failed to link the First Flame and became ashes. Now awoken once again, he is tasked to wipe out the lords of cinder in orders to the link of the flames.

History[]

Background[]

The Ashen One, a being of ash who once failed to link the fire, awakens in the Cemetery of Ash to the toll of bells signaling the threat to the flame. After defeating Iudex Gundyr and pulling the Coiled Sword from his chest, the Ashen One reaches Firelink Shrine, a hub filled with allies like the Fire Keeper, Blacksmith Andre, and Ludleth of Courland. The Fire Keeper tasks the Ashen One with returning the Lords of Cinder—Aldrich, Yhorm, the Abyss Watchers, and Prince Lothric—to their thrones.

The Lords of Cinder[]

The Ashen One embarks on a journey to defeat the Lords of Cinder, traversing perilous lands: High Wall of Lothric: Defeating Vordt of the Boreal Valley opens the way to the Undead Settlement. Undead Settlement: Encounters with Yoel of Londor, the Giant, and the Curse-rotted Greatwood lead to alliances and the acquisition of powerful items like the Transposing Kiln. Cathedral of the Deep: The Ashen One battles the Deacons of the Deep, only to find Aldrich has fled to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Farron Keep: The Abyss Watchers, corrupted by the Abyss, are defeated, restoring one Lord of Cinder to their throne.

Profaned Capital: Yhorm the Giant falls with the aid of the Storm Ruler, his ashes reclaimed. Anor Londo: Aldrich, Devourer of Gods, is slain while using Gwyndolin as a puppet.

The Final Lord[]

At Lothric Castle, the Ashen One confronts Lothric and his brother, Lorian. Despite their refusal to link the flame, the Ashen One claims their ashes after a fierce battle.

Beyond the Flame[]

Optional paths include the Painted World of Ariandel, where Sister Friede resists the painting's renewal, and the Ringed City, where Gael consumes the Dark Soul of humanity.

The End of the Journey[]

Following Slave Knight Gael, the Ashen One reaches the Ringed City, where they face Midir and defeat Gael to acquire the Blood of the Dark Soul. They return to Firelink Shrine, place the ashes on the thrones, and are transported to the First Flame, where they battle the Soul of Cinder.

After defeating it, the Ashen One has the choice to either link the fire, allow it to fade, or other options based on their decisions.
