Audrey Roberts is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. She debuted on 16 April 1979 started out as a recurring character up until 7th April 1992. Then after being ascent throughout 1983 and making a few appearances in 1984, she reappeared on 8th April 1985 and became one of the show's central protagonists from then onwards.

She is portrayed by Sue Nicholls.

History

Audrey Roberts was born on 23rd July 1940, conceived by her late parents Sir Robert and Nancy respectively. Nearly two decades later she gave birth to two children - a son called Stephen in 1957 and a daughter named Gail in 1958.

Many decades later, Audrey came to Weatherfield in 1979 to attend Gail's 21st birthday party. It was clear they were estranged at the beginning but hoped to rekindle their relationship. Audrey initially settled on a partial basis before later deciding to stay permanently when coming back in 1985. From then onwards Audrey settled with Gail and would provide support to her on numerous occasions, including the time when Gail's first husband Brian Tilsley died in 1989 and then when Gail remarried to her second husband Martin Platt a few years later. By then, Audrey became a grandmother to Gail's three children - Nick and Sarah from her marriage to Brian, and then to fellow grandson David through her marriage to Martin at the occasion.

During this time, Audrey had been in a relationship with local resident Alf Roberts and the two got married in the mid 1980s. Their marriage became long-lasting for many years up until New Year's Day 1999 when Alf suddenly died from a fatal stroke. By then, Audrey had become close friends with Gail's colleague Alma Hailwell and was completely devastated when the latter passed away from terminal cancer in 2001.

In 2002, after Gail's marriage with Martin had collapsed, she remarried to financial advisor Richard Hillman in a lavish wedding ceremony. Audrey grew supportive of Richard at first despite having initial misgivings about his character. However, Richard's financial problems lead him to target Audrey for her inheritance. Richard's plan against Audrey involved manipulating her daily routine to make it appear that she is suffering from dementia. Then in November that year, Richard attempted to kill Audrey by setting her house on fire.

The plan was unsuccessful in the end and Audrey eventually learned the truth about Richard, including the fact that he killed her employee Maxine Peacock and his ex-wife Patricia. However, it was at that point that everyone had believed that Audrey was going mad and suffering from dementia thanks to Richard's elaborate plan. She attempted to warn Gail about Richard, but in the end Gail disbelieved her mother and this led to a brief between the two over Richard. In February 2003, however, Gail finally learned the truth about Richard's crimes and that her mother was right about him all along. She broke up with Richard and made amends with Audrey. A few weeks later, Richard tried to kill Gail and the family by driving them into a canal; they were all rescued and Richard died, with Gail and Audrey later identifying his body at the canal.

For the next few years, Audrey found herself getting entangled with both family and personal matters. She and Gail fell out again over Audrey's romance with conman Lewis Archer that ended when he passed away on New Year's Day 2019. Then several years later, Audrey was pleased when Stephen came to stay in Weatherfield. But she was heartbroken a year later when Stephen was revealed to have killed three people. He attempted to flee when Audrey confronted him over his antics. She was then heartbroken when Stephen was killed in a car crash just moments later.
