Let their potential be developed...for in them I think there is a chance that we may see the end of our struggle at last!
~ Auriel voting for humanity's survival.
Hope, the only virtue with purpose. For without it, what meaning has suffering?
~ Mephisto about Auriel.

Auriel is a member of Angiris Council and a hero in Diablo III.

She is an Archangel of Hope and a master of Gardens of Hope. Being the source of all hope in the world, she is often perceived as an archenemy of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred.

She is voiced by Cree Summer.

Personality and traits[]

Auriel is said to be the most lighthearted and optimistic member of the Angiris Council. She is the binder of all Archangels, often helping them with their struggles and ending their arguments. She also believes in humanity's potential and voted for their survival.

Auriel is also a skilled warrior, using her whip, Al'maiesh, and sword on the battlefield. She is believed to be an archenemy of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred. Their relationship is vague and left ambiguous, but Mephisto clearly likes to taunt her.

Auriel is able to fly, teleport and is also a skilled swordswoman. Her most prominent power is inducing hope to all living beings. Her whip, Al'maiesh, is a powerful weapon, able to slice many demons at one time and also inducing hope when touched by her allies.

Biography[]

The Sin War[]

When Sanctuary was discovered, she was its most ardent defender and opposed Imperius who wanted to destroy it. She wanted to uphold the inhabitants' right to life and wanted to see them grow and mature. She seems compassionate towards others and respects life.

She was the one who allowed Rathma, Mendeln, Serenthia and Achilios to hear the debate that would decide the future of Sanctuary, because she felt that Uldyssian's sacrifice entitled those closest to him to at least hear what his sacrifice meant.

Diablo III[]

In Act IV, Auriel has been captured by Rakanoth. Once freed, she enables the Heroes to destroy the Corrupted Growthsso that the illusion protecting the Hell Rifts can be dispelled. In the meanwhile, Auriel goes to rally the angelic Host. Once the Heroes have entered and destroyed a Hell Rift, Auriel returns to give a portal back to the Gardens of Hope.

After Diablo's defeat, she appears alongside Itherael, proclaiming that evil has been vanquished and that she'd always had faith in the nephalem.

Trivia[]

  • Auriel's name comes from two angels: Uriel and Ariel. Cuoriously, in the Hebrewian religion, gender of both of them is ambiguous.
    • The beginning of her name may also come from Latin word "Aurora", meaning "Dawn". It would be matching, as dawn is often associated with hope.
  • Because of Auriel's and Mephisto's behaviour towards each other and ambiguous flashbacks in the Sin War novels, some fans have speculated the two were lovers. However, this was not confirmed.
