Ava is a supporting protagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
She is highly skilled member of the Abbot Monastery, having been there since she was a child. Due to how capable she is, the Master tasks her with training a powerful novice named M.K. on controlling his Gift. As M.K. slowly uncovers the darker side of the Monastery and decides to run away, Ava ultimately goes with him in order to protect him from the other Abbots, who will inevitably track them down.
She was portrayed by Eve Connolly.
Personality[]
Ava is easily the kindest member of the Abbot Monastery, despite being raised there since she was a kid, she still is sympathetic to novices like M.K. who are doubtful of the Master and the Abbot Monastery's intentions. While she will sometimes get annoyed with M.K. due to him constantly trying to break the rules, its understandable as it potentially puts her at risk of punishment by the Master, however she is still kind enough to M.K. that he is willing to share his past with her and even tells her secrets that he admits to having never told anyone before. Mentoring M.K. for so long causes her to become very attached to him, to the point that when he finally decides to run away from the Monastery she decides to go after him despite knowing it will lead to both of them being hunted down by the Abbots for desertion. Ava admits that she isn't sure what to do now that she doesn't have the Master telling her what to do, but she wants to believe that her teachings on faith and rebirth are still true. When Cyan, Dury, and Ramona do track them down, Ava ends up being fatally injured during their fight, but still uses the last bit of her strength to kill Ramona in order to save M.K.'s life. In her final moments, Ava admits to M.K. that she is scared, because she isn't sure if there is anything after death like the Master always said.
Powers & Abilities[]
- The Gift: Ava was an extremely skilled user of the Gift, and potentially the most powerful member of the Abbot Monastery outside of the Master. This is best seen during the fight with Cyan, Dury, and Ramona, as Ava was able to match both Dury and Ramona in combat at the same time while using their Gifts, and it took all three of them to attack her at once in order to gain an advantage. Even with her Gift deactivated, she still was capable of using some its abilities, as she was able to utilize supernatural strength to kill Ramona.
- Martial Arts/Axemanship: Ava showed herself to be very capable in combat, fighting three highly trained Abbots at once and sparring with M.K. on a daily basis during their time at the Monastery. While she generally did not use weapons, she at one point threw and axe with great precision in order to save M.K. for a farmer attacking him.
Trivia[]
- Ava is the only mentor or authority figure in the series who never tries to manipulate or use M.K. for their own gain.
