The Girl Who Stands Behind[]

When the protagonist Taro Ninten finds that Yoko Kojima was strangled to death, Ayumi rushes over to the corpse of her friend and breaks down over her death, asking why she died. Nothing the protagonist tries seems to get any answers out of her before Detective Utsugi calls him back to his office. As the two were talking, Ayumi arrives by herself and apologizes for her panic attack when she learned of Yoko's death. Utsugi apologizes for asking her over and introduces her to the protagonist. The protagonist proceeds to ask her questions and learns Yoko was her best friend.

She denies Yoko having a grudge and explains she formed a detective club that investigates rumors and oddities regarding the school and town and had times of splitting up until her friend's murder. Ayumi further explains that Yoko had changed in personality during the last days she was alive. The conversation ends when Utsugi asks him to visit the Kojima home with Ayumi guiding him there. After hearing from the mother about what her daughter Yoko doing while going out a week ago before her death when she learned of her child having a vision of the Girl in the Back who wanted out.

This revelation shocks Ayumi who decided to take the protagonist to her school where she recalled the ghost story about a blood-stained girl which lasted for years, with Taro mentioning other schools with "seven wonders". She goes with the protagonist to ask all the people at Ushimitsu High School about what Yoko was doing before her death. Ayumi explains hearing of the ghost from Yoko last week. When Taro could not Komada and was confronted at the old building by an angry Tazaki, Taro spots Ayumi and follows her to a mirror at the end of a hallway. Taro finds she was asking a lot of people about the rumors Yoko was getting involved with prior to her death. She explains she will never forgive her friend's murderer.

The next day after Yoko changed in behavior but before her death, Yoko was standing in front of the mirror when Yoko walked up behind her and told her that the ghost girl was standing behind her, but Ayumi could not understand what she meant. Taro then leaves to visit Komada to for information on Yoko and the ghost story that stemmed from the disappearance of Shinobu Asakawa after she witnessed the murder of a bar owner named Genjiro Kaneda in his home 15 years ago, which was going to meet its expiration date for its case after so long. Once Taro suspects Yoko was investigating Kaneda's murder and heard about Hayama having been the cause of the ghost story (albeit not proud of it.), Ayumi crosses paths with him when he got into an argument with Tazaki about the murders the protagonist was trying to solve.

Ayumi explained she left flowers by the river Yoko's remains was found at and discovered a man who was nerby that the witnses said was at least 60 before Tazaki shoves them both out. Ayumi laments that Tazaki was nicer than that and refuses to believe he was connected to Yoko's murder. Ayumi also still wonders what her friend meant about the "Girl Who Stands Behind" and mentions a 30-year old man lurking around the school lately. Taro comes with her to the lounge while realizing someone's watching him. There he finds Hibino once he arrives at the lounge, but he does not get much from Hibino while Ayumi spoke with another teacher before Principal Urabe interrupts Taro and takes Hibino along to talk with the latter.

At this point, Ayumi was done with her talk and regroups with Taro and decides to help find Yoko's murderer even though Taro worries for her safety. Ayumi then walks off while Taro returns to Utsugi's Office. The next day, Taro vows to find the killer for Ayumi's safety when he gets called by Utsugi about the Kaneda case where he learns that there was another suspect who was connected to the school, Tazaki as he owed him a lot of money and argued a couple days before the murder. Taro heads to the school to ask about the bizarre alibi of Tazaki. After Taro loses Tazaki when he ran off due to Taro spotting him mid conversation with Hayama, Ayumi meets him at the Utsugi detective agency seemingly to talk with him about what happened. However, when Ayumi gave him coffee, Taro starts to lose consciousness due to her slipping in sleeping pills in an attempt to find the killer herself. It's only thanks to a phone call later that Taro was able to wake up and realize how much danger Ayumi might have gotten herself in.

Taro rushes out to Tazaki's pad out of worry for her and checks out the apartment of Tazaki's neighbor with no response and makes a mad dash around town in a panic to try and find Ayumi before something horrible happens to her. After hearing from a student about Ayumi not being at school and was at a train station, Taro rushes to the pleasure district of the town to try and locate her. It is here Mrs. Kojima arrived to explain what happened when Ayumi met her and learned of Ayumi drugging him and her calling the agency was what woke him up. Worried about where Tazaki was, the Kojima mother called it crazy for Ayumi to seek out a murderer alone and provides Taro an image of Ayumi so it can help find her.

That night, Taro heads back to Tazaki's apartment and asks the Janitor's neighbor to get information on Ayumi's wherabouts and learned Ayumi was at the complex. Taro checked a package the neighbor was holding for Tazaki and learned that Ayumi is at Marufuku Village and catches a train to the fishing village to ensure she is safe. After visiting Tazaki's mother and a townie to check on Ayumi, he learns from the latter that Ayumi followed Tazaki to the cliff and rushed to it where Tazaki grabs her when he spots Taro. Tazaki proclaims he is done for and he'd kill Ayumi and himself. After some arguments with Taro, Tazaki lets Ayumi go as he does not think he can do that. Tazaki explained that Genjiro, before his murder, argued with him about the high amount of interest the bar owner charged him and demanded he pay it the next day.

After Genjiro's murder, Principal Urabe covered for Tazaki in hopes of protecting him from being protected from a crime he did not commit. Tazaki was employed at the school after he was fired from a prior job due to a crime. Tazaki also admits he did meet Yoko and became a suspect in her subsequent murder. He was feeling guilty for his arguments with Yoko and Ayumi. He then asked for the two to forgive him on his actions. Which Ayumi gave and went back with Taro.

At the agency, Taro shares a tender moment with Ayumi after making sure she is safe before she walks with Taro to the school to catch up on her classes. At the building, Ayumi promises to let Taro know of something new if she learns it. Taro declines to let her touch the photo he had of her as it might be troublesome if she disappears again. Ayumi proceeds to tell Taro about Hitomi Kawaii, who was one of Yoko's classmates and a great friend who'd help and know something. After Ayumi leaves, Taro was checking around the school when Principal T. Urabe asked him to keep Ayumi safe. After Taro tried to trail the strange man who was with Urabe after seeing him lurk around the school, Ayumi arrives to stop Hitomi when he keeps accusing Taro of being the person prowling the school.

Afterwards, Ayumi proceeds to continue aid Taro in trying to get more information regarding Yoko with Hitomi stepping in to offer his aid in ensuring Ayumi in keeping Ayumi safe from danger. As Hitomi was mourning Yoko, Ayumi asked Taro to let him be before Hitomi asks to meet at the old building the next day. When Hitomi did not show the next day, Ayumi arrived and took Taro to visit someplace else for the time being. Here, at the front of the school, Ayumi and Taro discuss on what happened to Hitomi when Hitomi, Taro overhears a pair of girl students talk about the girl who stands behind and theri version had her weep in an empty class room.

Ayumi also explains that Hitomi found some clues and went off to find him and show him to the old building. She also asked him to pay a visit to the art room. During his visit, Taro was feeling watched when he was alone until he noticed the drawing of a girl who looked like Yoko Kojima when Ayumi arrived and noticed it to. When Kameda comes back, he explains that the drawing was a sketch of Shinobu and not Yoko. Further more, it was done by a former student, Ryoko, whom Komada told Taro to meet as she might know more. The next day at the art room, Taro explained that Yoko had visited Ryoko and claimed that Shinobu was somewhere in the school. Shinobu was also friends with a boy called Uchida, which was the surname of the man who committed suicide after Kaneda's actions cost him his factory. Yoko also learned from Yoko's mother that Shinobu was Yoko's cousin and never wanted to pry anything following Kaneda's murder. Yoko had also realized Yoko might have been possessed by Shinobu after finding her position in the mirror identical to the pose in the drawing.

Later on, Ayumi was visiting Hibino for a test to make up for being tardy and noted that the atmosphere was gloomy and bleak like the time before Yoko died. During the last night before the day the statute of limitations ran out on Genjiro's murder, Taro takes Ayumi and Hibino to Urabe's office and breaks the door open to find the principle committed suicide, claiming he was a shady collaborator with Genjiro but ended up killing him and later Yoko and Genjiro. However, Hibino refutes the claims and reveals he was the true killer of those three, having been driven to a life of crime by his father's suicide due to Genjiro's meddling, he first killed Genjiro out of anger for the circumstances that led to his father's suicide which was witnessed by Shinobu who tried to flee for her life only to get run over by Urabe who tried to stop the young Hibino from committing murder. After hiding Shinobu's body in the old school building, the girl woke up in a cry for help before dying of her injuries from getting hit by Urabe's car.

Years later, Hibino ended up strangling Yoko to death when she confronted him over his crimes 15 years ago and later stabbed Goro to death when he was blackmailing Urabe. Taro flees with Ayumi in an attempt to get to safety from Hibino who was now out for their blood in their indirect role in Urabe's suicide only to take a wrong turn and get cornered at the mirror where Taro manages to save himself and Ayumi by dodging Hibino's strike which breaks the mirror and reveals Shinobu's corpse which shocked him long enough to be cornered by the police while Taro escorts Ayumi to safety. The next day, Ayumi is recruited by Shunsuke Itsugi as a new member of his agency and takes her out to lunch. Later on, Ayumi watch as Taro takes on a new case. As he is leaving, she asks where he is going which sets up the events of The Missing Heir.

Emio - The Smiling Man[]

Ayumi returns in Emio - The Smiling Man. Following the murder of Eisuke, Ayumi reveals to Taro and Shunsuke the urban legend of Emio the Smiling Man which was related to the murders of three teen girls from 18 years back when they were covered with paper bags with smiling faces on them after being murdered.
