Lord Baelor Blacktyde is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He is the Lord of Blacktyde, the head of House Blacktyde, and the captain of his longship the Nightflyer. Originally a worshiper of the Drowned God, the Iron Islands' native deity, however, following his capture in Greyjoy's Rebellion during his time in captivity, Baelor became a follower of the Faith of the Seven, the main and dominant religion in Westeros.
Appearance[]
Baelor Blacktyde is a handsome man with a smooth face. He wears a lambswool tunic of black-and-green vairy (the colors of his house) and his sable cloak has a seven-pointed star pin.
Biography[]
Background[]
During Balon Greyjoy's rebelion against the Iron Throne, Baelor's father, the unnamed Lord of Blacktyde, was killed during the rebellion. After being captured, Baelor Blacktyde, would spend eight years in Oldtown as a hostage and eventually converted to the Faith of the Seven. As of the present, Baelor continued to resent Balon Greyjoy for his father's death and called him "Balon the Widowmaker".
After the boy Tristifer "Tris" Botley was caught sexually experimenting with Asha Greyjoy, her father, Lord Balon Greyjoy, sent Tris to ward with Baelor Blacktyde.
A Feast for Crows[]
“ | Baelor: We cannot stand alone against all Westeros. King Robert proved that, to our grief. Balon would pay the iron price for freedom, he said, but our women bought Balon's crowns with empty beds. My mother was one such. The Old Way is dead. ~ Baelor and Victarion Greyjoy |
Lord Baelor stops at Ten Towers to consult with Lord Rodrik Harlaw, before making his way to Old Wyk for the kingsmoot. He expresses his fears over the plans of Euron Greyjoy, who has already claimed the Seastone Chair and rule over the castle of Pyke on the island of the same name. Baelor fears that Euron is planning to use the kingsmoot to descend upon all the other rival candidates and kill them all, just like Urron "Redhand" Greyiron had done at the last kingsmoot thousands of years before.
At the kingsmoot, he asks Victarion Greyjoy if he would end the war. When Victarion rejects the idea, Baelor moves on. He is one of the first to shout Princess Asha Greyjoy's name at the kingsmoot, after she announces that if she is crowned, she will bring about the conflict's ending and even negotiate with the Northmen to let the Ironborn keep the lands of Sea Dragon Point, which are mostly empty and unused by the former, so the Ironborn can make it their bridge to connect themselves with the mainland Westeros.
After Euron Greyjoy is raised as King of the Iron Islands at the kingsmoot, Baelor refuses to acknowledge Euron and attempts to return to Blacktyde. However, Victarion closes Nagga's Cradle with the Iron Fleet and captures Nightflyer, and Baelor is taken and delivered to King Euron in chains. As punishment for his refusal to acknowledge his new liege, Baelor is cut by Euron's crew into seven pieces, mockingly representing the Faith of the Seven. Euron claims Baelor's sable cloak for himself.
