You are no different, Little Brother. You are special.
~ Bagheera to Mowgli.
I lived in a king's palace, in a cage just like this. I bit, and I scratched, and I spent my entire life fighting. Until one day, I just stopped, and they gave me their trust. Gain their trust, and they'll let you out.
~ Bagheera explaining his backstory to Mowgli.

Bagheera is the deuteragonist of the 2018 Netflix live-action adventure drama film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, based on the late Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

He is a melanistic Indian leopard who found Mowgli in the jungle when he was an infant after his parents were killed by Shere Khan and takes him to the wolf pack so that they can raise him, becoming Mowgli's closest friend and one of his mentors. It is also revealed that he was born and raised in captivity, having spent most of his time as a plaything of man, which is why he had to gain their trust in the first place instead of fighting his way out.

He was portrayed in motion capture by Christian Bale, who also portrayed Batman in the Dark Knight Trilogy, Jamie Graham in Empire of the Sun, John Connor in Terminator: Salvation, Dan Evans in 3:10 to Yuma, and John Preston in Equilibrium.

Appearance[]

In contrast to his book incarnation from the original novel by Rudyard Kipling, this version of Bagheera is realistic in appearance due to him being a live-action version of his original counterpart of the same name, being depicted as a large melanistic Indian leopard with a muscular build. He also has a bald spot under his chin left by a collar that he used to wear in captivity for years.

Trivia[]

  • Just like in the original book, he calls Mowgli "little brother" and is protective of him.
  • Andy Serkis (Baloo) and Christian Bale (Bagheera) were together in The Prestige (2006), although they never shared the same scene.
  • He is currently one of the eleven characters of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book universe portrayed by an actor with a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being played by Christian Bale (Gorr the God Butcher). The others are Andy Serkis (Ulysses Klaue), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Cate Blanchett (Hela), Bill Murray (Krylar), Ben Kingsley (Trevor Slattery), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia), Garry Shandling (Senator Stern) and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan).
  • Due to being a melanistic leopard, Bagheera is almost completely black and looks fairly fearsome to a layman, but he is one of the most upstanding and noble associates of the pack and very loyal to Mowgli.
  • Mirroring Mowgli's story, Bagheera was raised in a cage among humans, but escaped to the jungle where he found his place as a wild predator.
  • Out of all the animals in Akela's pack, Bagheera is the only one who is willing to step ahead and aid Mowgli in his mission to kill Shere Khan. Only Baloo's denial stops him from following with it.
  • This is the third time Christian Bale has provided voice work for a non live-action role in his career. The first was Pocahontas (1995) and the second was Howl's Moving Castle (2004).
  • Christian Bale's role was played in the Disney film by Ben Kingsley, making this the second role they have in common after both playing Moses.
