“ | The truth is that when I lost my Gift, I became a weak, powerless, selfish little man. And for the first time in a long time, I knew what it was to be afraid. | „ |
~ Bajie |
Bajie is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Tilda) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is Sunny's traveling companion whom he meets in the Bordeaux Mines. Bajie is a former Dark One and was once the mentor to the Widow, having been trying to find her for years. While he does want to help Sunny get back to the Badlands, Bajie's true goal is to contact the legendary city of Azra, which he believes will cause them to finally return to the Badlands and fix the broken state of the world.
He was portrayed by Nick Frost, who also played Ed in Shaun of the Dead and Clive Gollings in Paul.
Appearance[]

Bajie's primary outfit in Season 3.
Bajie is a large man, but does not appear to be overweight as he is often still quite agile while in combat. Throughout the series he sports a large beard which he appears to have had since his time in the Abbot Monastery and never shaved. In the second season he primarily wears the Picker outfit that he and Sunny obtained during their time in the Bordeaux Mines. In the third season, his outfit changes to be a combination of a fur coat and a large orange vest.
Personality[]
In the past, Bajie has betrayed people close to him, such as when he split from the Widow due to cowardice after losing his Gift or abandoned his wife Lily due to wanting to search for Azra. When Sunny first meets Bajie, he appears to have a loose set of morals, being willing to employ dirty tactics in order to escape from the Bordeaux Mines. However, in truth he is a very honorable individual even if he does not actively behave as one. After escaping the Bordeaux Mines with Sunny and traveling alongside him through the Outlands, he eventually agrees to help Sunny track down his wife Veil and infant son Henry. Even after being captured by the Widow and later escaping, he goes to help Sunny take down Quinn even though it was of no benefit to him. Bajie's true goal is send out a help signal to Azra, a mission he was set on by Ankara. He believes that this will effectively save the world, as the people in Azra will come to the Badlands and fix its broken state. This shows that Bajie truly does want to help people, even if he often has dubious morals in his pursuit of it.
After he sends out the signal to Azra and gets no response for months, he relapses into heavy drinking and scamming people out of money, habits he had generally shaken off during his travels with Sunny. After he reunites with Sunny and learns that Veil has died and Sunny is now the only one to look after Henry, Bajie rejoins Sunny in helping to save Henry's life. Once the Gift emergences in Henry, it becomes clear that he will die soon if the Gift is not removed somehow. Bajie does everything he can to help Sunny save Henry, and is the only person that Sunny will let watch Henry without fear. Bajie finally redeems himself for his old negative traits, even apologizing to the Widow and Lily and working to protect the world from threats such as Pilgrim even at the cost of his own life. On multiple occasions, he puts his life on the line to save Sunny or Henry. After Sunny's death, Bajie promises to take Henry out of the Badlands, and raise him as his own son, without his bad habits such as drinking or sleeping around, showing he has fully abandoned his old lifestyle.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Bajie is shown to be one of the most skilled warriors in all of the Badlands, being proficient in martial arts and a variety of different weapons. He often uses his weight in battle, and was extremely durable, being one of the few individuals who could take hits from Dark Ones without being immediately incapacitated. By the end of the series, he was shown capable of taking down multiple untrained Dark Ones at once and equal to the Widow in skill, only being surpassed by warriors such as Sunny or Pilgrim.
- Gift Deactivation: Due to being a former Abbot, Bajie has mastery over how to attack the pressure points in others, which he uses when fighting Dark Ones by pressing the two pressure points on the back of their neck, thus disabling their Gift.
- Healing: Bajie is capable of using his pressure point technique to heal others, although not to the level that he is able to directly mend cuts or vital injuries. Instead, he primarily can use it to numb pain in others, as seen when he relieved the pain in Wren's leg after she was shot with a poison arrow.
- The Gift (formerly): Bajie once possessed an incredibly powerful Gift, to the point that he caught the eye of both the Master and Ankara. He eventually gave it up by transferring it to the Widow in order to wake her from the coma she was put under by the Master.

Trivia[]
- Bajie alludes to Zhu Bajie from the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, of which Into the Badlands is loosely based on.
- He is one of the few characters who's journey directly correlates to that of the character they are based on; Zhu Bajie was banished to Earth and reincarnated as a swine, and is forced to abstain from unholy acts such as drinking and sexual activity, while Bajie's story follows him losing his Gift and later becoming a drunken monk who eventually gives up on his constant drinking in order to do the right thing, such as protecting the world from Pilgrim or raising Henry.
- Bajie is the only character in the series shown to be proficient in fighting with the nunchaku.
- He once humorously used an octopus from a marketplace as a makeshift nunchaku.
