~ Baldi's catchphrase as a young man in a teaser for the comic strip heptalogy.

Professor Baldi Baldimore, simply known by his first name Baldi, is the titular main antagonist of the Baldi's Basics series.

He is voiced by the game's creator Micah James "Mystman12" McGonigal, who voices most of the characters in the same series, with exceptions being 1st Prize, Johnny, Mrs. Pomp, and Beans (excluding voiceless characters).

Appearance[]

Unlike his original comic strip counterpart, this version of Baldi has a plain-colored appearance in the game, although his youth in the comic strip heptalogy is also similar to that of the original comic strip series. He is a humanoid man with light skin, long, thin fingers, red lips, eyebrows, and a single strand of hair on his head that appears orange/red. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and light brown shoes. His left elbow is gray in the original game and Birthday Bash, and blue in Plus. Like his original comic strip counterpart, although he does not have visible ears, his poster mentions that he has excellent hearing.

Baldi's facial expression when chasing the player is neutral and does not show anger, although his expression is very distressed and distorted. This is most likely due to dithering.

Personality[]

Like his original comic strip counterpart, when he was a young man in the heptalogy of comic strips, Baldi was a good-natured guy who liked to break the fourth wall, although he could get angry easily or to the point of violence such as in Baldi Hair where he threatened to burn everyone's hair. However, despite his hot-tempered personality, he actually felt remorse for his actions towards others and had to correct and take responsibility for his mistakes. Despite his temporary setbacks, he is also a very intelligent man, able to create things that are wrong, like his original counterpart did and even break the fourth wall in an efficient manner.

He also has a heroic nature as shown in the Baldiman comics, where he became a superhero and would help a young boy with the ability to create anything such as Jackhammer99, although he once made a mistake when he accidentally told the boy that the tool would cut off someone's toes. It is also implied that during his time as a superhero, Baldi seems to have helped and rescued several people in his neighborhood, as well as facing several enemies that attacked the earth. That's why Baldi is popular today.

Like his original counterpart, Baldi also has a big appetite and loves to create various things in his spare time, such as Jackhammer99, You Can Think Pad, math machines, fog machines, a kind of gravity reversal machine, Portal Poster, shrinking machines, and others.

Great teacher due to his incredible hearing abilities! He can not only tell where any sound came from, but who made it too!
~ Description of Baldi himself, as an adult.

During his adult life in the game, Baldi is shown to have matured and changed, as well as being a friendly and popular teacher, as the students and other staff refer to him as "Great Teacher" as evidenced by his poster in the Principal's office. He is also shown to be very brave and defensive when helping others in both of his school buildings, as if a thief were to rob Johnny's store, he would come and arrest the thief for any stolen goods. He does not do many of the silly things he did when he was a young man, or even show much emotion towards others in general, also implying that Baldi cares a lot about young children.

However, unlike his original comic strip counterpart, he is later shown to be a rather cruel and abusive head teacher; hitting his students with his ruler if they do not answer math problems correctly, fining his staff if they do not follow school rules, and he considers all of the other staff to be weak. Baldi is also shown to be quite supportive of his students, as he has helped and rescued them when they were in trouble, much like he did when he was a young superhero, or giving Explorer Student a Quarter after he answered three math problems in his first notebook. He is also shown to be a manipulative teacher, having Explorer Student take his friend's first notebook and have his math problems answered by his students. Baldi is also shown to be lovable when he congratulates Explorer Student after he has collected all seven of his friends' notebooks. However, he soon threatens his student to get out while he can.

Despite his treacherous nature, he actually knows how to apologize and be polite to his students and staff in school, and he has to overcome his anger issues. This is shown in the description of the Camping Field Trip in Plus, where he only gets upset when you put the wrong fuel in and asks you to try again. Baldi's entire personality throughout the series after Explorer Student collects all seven of his unnamed friend's notebooks on the first day is that his mind has been controlled by the corrupted entity Null. As shown in several secret endings in the main series; hacking him into a giant, ordering him to capture Explorer Student, and even worse, locking him in a development room, thus subjecting him to torture by the entity.

After Null disappeared from the game world, Baldi's persona as a manipulative and backstabbing teacher finally ended after he was freed from Null's mind control. Although he did chase Explorer Student, he was very kind to him in the secret ending of Classic Remastered after NULL Style was defeated; explaining negative numbers to his student, playing a special song for him, and allowing him to help him test his new Shrinking Machine in Classic Style, Party Style, and Demo Style as an apology for his previous behavior and atonement for his sins.

Trivia[]

  • Although Baldi is a teacher, there are several clues that suggest he cannot write or spell correctly, such as "Bald's Bus" and the abandoned spelling room in Baldi's Basement. There are many other texts in the game, such as posters, that also have many typos and errors. However, it is unknown if he wrote them.
  • He also seems to be the only staff owner in the school besides the Principal, Gotta Sweep, Mrs. Pomp, and Dr. Reflex. He seems to only know mathematics and seems obsessed with it, both conceptually, creating, and even physically.
    • Alongside math, he also likes science, although that involves a lot of math.
  • Before Null was removed from the game, Baldi claimed to be playing "hide and seek" or "tag" with the Explorer Student in an attempt to cover up the true nature of the game itself. Instead, Baldi becomes hostile and hunts down the Explorer Student to try to give him a rematch after answering a question incorrectly.
    • However, in Plus, it does not involve incorrect answers.
  • This version of Baldi is one of five characters Mystman12 has created over the years. The others are his original/non-canon comic strip counterpart, the original/non-canon comic strip Dr. Reflex and his game counterpart, Susan Baldimore, and Andrew Baldimore.
    • Due to his full name being named after his original/non-canon comic strip counterpart, Baldimore is the only human character whose real name is revealed in the Baldi's Basics series.
  • Baldi (alongside his original/non-canon comic strip counterpart) is one of the three favorite characters for Mystman12. The third is Gotta Sweep.
  • There are some differences between Baldi in the game series and Baldi in the original comic strip series such as:
    • The original/non-canon comic strip Baldi is only an inventor, while the game Baldi is both an inventor and a head teacher.
    • The game Baldi as Baldiman is implied to help and save everyone in trouble, while the original/non-canon comic strip Baldi does not imply that he has a heroic nature and aims to have fun.
    • The game Baldi is 29-3X years old, while the original/non-canon comic strip Baldi is heavily implied to be between 40s-50s.
    • Baldi has a wife and son in the comic strips: Susan and Andrew. However, in the game, it is heavily implied that Baldi only has a wife/girlfriend with the same name (Susan in the game version).
  • Since it is heavily implied that his true power was stolen by Null, after the Explorer Student collected all seven of his friends' notebooks from the first day in the original game. This suggests that Baldi is far superior to Null himself, as he has more actual power and is defensive of his fellow Earthlings, if his true power was not stolen by Null. Considering that in the NULL Style ending of the Classic Remastered, where Null was removed from the game forever due to a glitch, this may imply that Baldi is the cause of Null's possible death using a glitch to steal his power, although this is still unconfirmed.
